We are about 8 miles from Saddleworth and 25 or so from Winter Hill - can see the smoke flowing past from Saddleworth and Winterhill from our back garden.

Not good

I saw this after leaving work in Chorley just before 6pm. The wife and I have just been for a walk to the shop and could see the plume from north west of Preston.

I was considering cycling to work tomorrow, but think I'll drive in to save my asthmatic lungs.

It's by the mast buildings

Fortunately for me wind direction is pushing the smoke towards Adlington other wise it would be in my house as I back onto the moors

Is this likely to be what I saw on the M56 this afternoon? I assumed it was from Widnes or St Helens way, but certainly the right direction. Quite some plume if I'm correct.

I saw it as I drove up the M61 yesterday evening. No smoke this morning that I noticed on the way down but there was still a smell of burning in the air as I passed by.

I think you will find that was the MT Merapi eruption in Indonesia.

Was in a good position to see both last night from Sponds Hill near Macclesfield. Saddleworth although out had smoke in the valley that had drifted into central manchester and beyond. Winter hill had a classic point fire plume which was heading SE and going across to N Wales and beyond...a mate took some photos of the sunset through them which should be awesome! glad it sounds like its out though.

Big smoke plume right now on the Bolton side, started an hour or two ago. Looks to be getting bigger.

Yes, just seen it driving home through Bolton. SURLEY someone hasn't started this deliberately.

it's still going, pretty strongly from what i can tell slightly further down the hill into horwich from Duncan. smoke is coating the woods on the chorley side of rivington pike currently. it's not good up there.

Now a major incident and I can see flames from my window. Don't think I'm at risk as George's lane is in the way but my house smells like an islay malt

Yeah, me and clover (from the forum) were out today and you could see the plume across the valley, unbelievably we stopped to help a couple who had burnt themselves on their BBQ they'd set up just off the packhorse trail! (he needed a plaster). Seriously: what's the matter with some folk!

still burning today. can see the pike now, just, but once it heats up and the wind picks up like it's apparently going to then it's anyone's guess as to how bad it gets. most of the fire seems to be on belmont side of winter hill now, but yeah it stinks of smoke everywhere in horwich.

it's pretty heartbreaking tbh, even though we know it'll recover in time it's currently a total devastation.

Was largely out this morning at 7am, just a few isolated pockets that I was told were under control.

Spoke to one of the crews who had come over from Humberside in tandem with another fire engine.

All the footpaths and roads are closed but I was allowed over George’s Lane to the other side. Fantastic job by all involved.

Good to see they've got it under control.I was out on my motorbike yesterday & the smoke was affecting you as far over as Croston. I'm going out on the road bike now & I've planned a route that keeps me away from all that smoke. It's the first time I've had to plan a smoke diversion into a bike ride.

Thursday night I was southbound on the M6 & glancing over to Rivi it looked like some kind of volcano plume, never seen a moorland fire that bad before.

You could see the dirty haze over Lancashire from the Dales. I'm sure it isn't usually there. 🙂

Winds are stronger now though so I'd be unsurprised to see fires pop up again.

(looking south from Weets Top nr Malham towards Pendle Hill.)

According Bolton MRT Faceaches page there has been a controlled burn in place, but I wouldn’t be surprised if fires do pop up again as conditions are unfortunately perfect.

Low-level bombing runs with one of those Russian jets would control things pretty quickly, they’re using them in Portugal, apparently.

They’ve been burning longer but being in the north we don’t make a fuss about it.

Drac I have been in Northumberland since the 15th and its maybe not as widely reported as it was the MOD that set fire to their own land! which is not exactly near any population centres

Now back in the NW and its way hotter & drier here 29-32 degC which is sadly much more highly populated V 18-22 degC in your area.

Our view on the way home Saturday night.

I've only seen the Hill alight like this probably 3 or 4 times in nearly 50 years... crying shame, but not surprising given the type of people that the beauty spots around Bolton attract when the weather is hot. Pure scum.

It is heartbreaking to see though. I have spent all my life wandering, riding, walking and camping in the West Pennine Moors.

The services up there dealing with it are bloody heros. The heat is immense.

Sadly I think it will only be a matter of time before Darwen and Holcombe moors are up. They are all like a tinder box. As dry as I have ever seen them.

Where's that photo taken from Lowey?

We were on Great Hill on Saturday and later the WWW near Belmont, from where it looked like the whole Eastern flank was alight as early as mid-day Saturday.

In many ways it almost doesn't matter if they were lit deliberately. When it's that hot and dry for such a sustained length of time a lightning strike or piece of glass is all it needs with pretty much the same result. Not that I'm condoning the arson, but with that amount of dry fuel there I'd had been surprised if there wasn't a major blaze.

Not sure if mentioned but Healey Nab has also been up a bit, deliberate fire. Just the exit of the red.

Belmont/San Marino side has had it. Road closures and all sorts. Really horrid to see. Hopefully Darwen & Great Hill don't go the same way!

Amazed on the news this morning that morons are treating this as a tourist attraction, blocking the roads so emergency crews can't get up there, trying to fly drones over when the services are trying to use a helicopter...

Why does the stupidity of people still amaze me..?!
