As above, to avoid me trawling, can anyone recommend a decent value sweet type white wine? Cheers.
The Aldi Exquisite Collection Reisling is lovely, not overly sweet though.
Can I just shock you? I like wine.
No specific recommendation but I like a Sauternes.
Tesco finest gerwuztraminer if you can find it 👌
I work in the wine trade and would recommend the following if you absolutely must buy from the supermarket. Alsace riesling tends to be on the drier side so probably better sticking to Germany. I'd also avoid Australia as the vast majority are bone dry.
Waitrose have a really good range of Riesling with 3 or 4 on the sweeter end. The Dr Wagner is superb value and any of the Dr Loosen wines are tremendous if you want to splash out.
Yup the Tesco one is good, I got a nice Austrian from Morrisons (own brand The Best) the other day as well.
Those Morrison's own brand ones are usually decent but I would go with Gav's recommendations
Also as per Gav's hint, I'd hunt out your local independent because thanks to the pandemic they have all got their delivery game sorted 🙂 our local ones do free delivery to selcted postcodes.
Thanks all, despite my voluminous wine experience, I am no expert, and I was meaning a generic Gewürztraminer/Reisling/Liebfraumilch type.
@69er_Gav please say more about why supermarket wines are bad - they are screwing producers? I have started a naked wines subscription and it is good but a good step up from the £5-7 I usually spend in Aldi (who I was told are good to their suppliers).
Have a look at Viognier based wine. It needs to be young, older than 2 and it can be a bit flat rather than fresh.
If you’re buying German then Spätlase on the label will be sweeter.
The Lidl Mosel Riesling is a very nice medium sweet. Good value too.
I'm not a big wine buff, but my dad is into wine, and he rates it.
@cynical-al probably more a case that the supermarket selections are very limited. German wine is huge and much more than just reisling.
Tesco Finest Mosel Steep Slopes Riesling gets recommended here: https://www.theguardian.com/food/2021/jun/20/the-20-best-wines-for-summer-2021
Had a lovely Austrian white from Lidl recently.
I don't claim to be an expert, but isn't young Alsace reisling generally considered to be more dryer in style? (i'm sure there are some sweet options). Alsace Gewurtztraminer is less dry or sweeter German reisling stuff as most are recommending above.
@cynic-al Nothing wrong with some of the wines at all, especially sub £7 as independents would struggle to compete at that level. However, above £7 you will more than likely get a more interesting wine from a smaller producer when buying from a wine merchant. Much like utilising your LBS, most merchants will offer great advice and worth supporting your local shop.
My genuine opinion on Naked Wines is most of it is marketing and you are generally paying a bit too much per bottle for the quality. Some of the chat around supporting small producers is genuine, though a huge amount as absolute nonsense.
For £5-£8 wines we generally buy from The Wine Society, Majestic Wine(they sell single bottles these days). For most bottles beyond £8 we will use several local independents.
