Anybody else have trouble with this? Left my VM checking for Windows updates overnight, it's still checking. Is there something fundamental I'm missing here?

I know I can connect to MS, as it's successfully activated.

Not specifically with VMs, but WU can go potty sometimes. There's a FixIt for general WU problems on MS's site.

I'm sure you've checked but does the VM have web access? Network adaptor correctly set up on VM?

If yes then try the above 🙂

Mine are ok running updates across a number of MS platforms.....

The WUS might be bombed out with all the Win10 todoings?! 😉

It's a WU thang not a VM thang, assuming your VMs can hit the network and route to the internet. Fairly regularly needs kicking back to life.

Ooh, that's a good point. And Time Zone.

No problem with network (it needs that to activate, which is why I mentioned that), time or timezone (though thanks for the hint, it could have been that).

Tried the fixit and it didn't seem to do anything. A bit stumped here.

reboot reboot and reboot again. Had a few systems go mental over WU lately, none of the fixits worked.

Oh have you checked system resources? Maybe up the VM specs for a while?

Sounds like the same issue I had, just checks and checks and checks and checks, I was convinced there was something wrong (fresh installation) so reinstalled again and it checked and checked and checked and checked and ....

In the end I set power management to 'always on' and had to leave it running overnight before it would even find any updates, took about three days to complete, never known anything like it.

Suspect it will be fine if you leave it long enough.

Thanks D0NK and dirtydog - all things I was thinking of, but it's nice to have a bit of confirmation I'm going in the right direction. VM resources upped, a few reboots and I'll leave it to see what happens (power management already changed to turn off all sleep and hibernates - that might have been why nothing happened when left before).

...just to update 😉 , I've left it running and it has finally found lots of updates. I think the issue before is that it was sleeping/hibernating when I left it running. So well done dirtydog (though I had already fixed the power management).
