Hi team Windows experts

In my C:\ drive properties I've got an "unknown user" with a bunch of numbers that I have spotted while checking over the PC after getting a bunch of malicious emails.

From what I've read this seems to be an app installation / windows update leftover account (lots of references to SIDs) rather than malware but the forum threads I can find on it seem a bit lacking in input from Microsoft itself even on their own community answers site.

Any windows experts in the house who can confirm/deny?

Win11 S if that helps.

Yep, legacy account that doesn't exist any more. Just delete the folder.

What do you mean by malicious emails? Unless you've run something from an email, unlikely to be related.

The "send me bitcoin or else" type.

I don't believe they've got control of my devices but I do want to make sure there's no vulnerability that I have missed that explains why I've ended up getting spammed intensively.

I've seen this "old account" explanation before but this machine has only ever had one user on it so that doesn't really make sense for me.

Yeah so your emails are sent to a mail server e.g. Gmail our outlook. No direct interface to your computer. Unless you're old school and running an email client rather than using webmail.

I'd bet my left bollock that they haven't compromised your computer.

I had several the other day saying they'd caught me looking at porn and had webcam evidence, pure spam, just ignore them.

They obtain your email address from online lists of emails, usually from crappy websites that have been hacked but not always. They didn't get your email from your computer. Sorry to tell you but the emails aren't special and personal, everyone gets them 🙂

Does your only user account have admin rights on the computer? it would be a good idea (if it is ) to create another account, make this the administrator and make your normal day-to-day account a non-admin account.

That much I had realised 😂.

Thanks all. I'm pretty sure I know which list leaked. I've led a surprisingly scam email light life so far and the sudden influx coupled with some other stressful life stuff going on has made me a bit on edge.

Appreciate the input as always. 😁
