Jesus, I bought a USB mike for doing Zoom chats cause the mike in my webcam is not so great when it's noisy. First it wouldn't plug into my USB cable, no matter how many times I turned the plug upside down. It usually only takes three or four attempts, but this time it turns out they switched to a new-fangled plug that plugs in both ways so I have to use the new one that came in the box, not the old one that's already plugged into my computer. Computer detected it fine so I tried the audio test on Zoom and there was just nothing there. Went into Windows settings and played around, tried Googling, but nothing. Rebooted the computer, unplugged other USB stuff. Nothing. Figured I'd take it into the office and try it on a different machine. Just as I was packing it into the box, I noticed a switch labelled "On" and "Off". Some smart **** designed it so you have to switch it on before you can use it. Bastards.

Some folk like to mute a mic...

Nothing worse than listening to a mouth breather or nasal whistler who has forgot to mute themselves on a Teams call.

That's what caused the problem. It detected the mike and everything looked fine, but it won't work if it's not switched on. If plug and play didn't work, I would have known there was a problem.

yes, I think OP was implying he was the ****? 🤣

Presumably if you RTFM it wouldn't have been an issue 😂

It doesn't have a manual because it's very simple to set up, you just plug it in and turn it on, it just has a picture showing where the cable goes and where the switch is. No reading required.

For some reason the swear filter seems to have blocked the word 'amazing'..

it just has a picture showing where the cable goes and where the switch is.

The plot thickens..

Lose all your man-points and hand in your membership card. OP did things in the correct order and retains card and points! 😃

Yes but you'd have thought it was a different problem than the one you actually had 🙂

So is the on/off switch a tiny little one in a place you'd never see it or really obvious like the one on my USB mic? :p

Depends on whether it's on the side you're looking at or the other side. The mics symmetrical so there's a fairly good chance you can't see it unless you turn it the other way up.

That sounds similar to a PEBCAK, but I cannot figure out the acronym...

Problem In Chair Not In Computer

Courtesy of one of my IT colleagues when I had a (genuinely rare) moment of dopey wombatery with one of our systems.

Jesus, what's with all the blame the victim stuff on here. It's supposed to be plug and play - you plug it in and it just works. This one, you have to plug it in and then turn it on before it works. Where's the truth in advertising in that?

Layer 8 problem for the network d00ds

When I saw reference to plug and play I thought it was the 90’s again. Since about 2005 it stopped being a feature much like breathing.

I like the idea of a mic with a physical switch.
