I have a Acer Aspire one that my daughter uses for school work.

It runs Linpus and Open Office which is fine but I think she would rather have Windows XP and Office. I have licenses but when I installed XP it ran very slowly, even after a memory upgrade.

Is there a stripped down version of XP which would run at an acceptable speed?

There is tinyxp on torrent sites, don't know if it would run any faster though.

I like the Linux version, it does everything you need it to, efficiently.

Thanks Rich

No problem with the Linux, I also tried Ubuntu which was also good but I think it is a bit of peer pressure as it looks a bit different from her friends Windows/Office machines.

Yeah, I hear you. Explain to her the benefits of not having a Windows system, she should be proud. Kids eh! (my daughter has one too) 😉

I'm running Windows 7 release candidate (Free beta from microsoft) on my aspire one and it works a charm. It's a lot quicker than vista. Expires in march though 🙁

Peer pressure over what operating system your computer runs?

God I miss school!

There's a stripped down version of XP called Performance Edition, available at a torrent site near you. It's not very PnP though, since that's largely what's stripped out, and you'll have trouble keeping it patched without Windows GA. The much smaller registry load speeds it up a fair bit in normal running. Probably not the best idea for a child, given their misplaced sense of web invulnerability.

I agree with krag that 7 is a fair bit less porky than Vista, but I don't see it being less demanding than XP.
