Need Windows on the new laptop.
I would be happy with OpenOffice, but the GF says she needs Windows.
Don't much fancy paying 60€/month. There are some deals offering lifetime/one purchase of Windows for ~£220
(Microsoft Office 2021 Home and Business | 1 User | 1 PC (Windows 10/11) or Mac | One-Time Purchase | Multilingual | Download https://amzn.eu/d/gJjYans)
Is this legit? Does it work or does it randomly stop working?
I think you are getting Windows and MS Office confused?
That's definitely a legit link for MS Office.
You can get it much cheaper than that. https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/psa-ms-office-dirt-cheap/
We are using £20 ISH Office licences from Amazon on our rental laptops that we don't want linked to our 365 accounts and they are all working without issues
What Gobuchul said +1, my old laptop ran on a hookey windows key and my new one has hookey Office key.
Just check that either/both are an actual key, not a license pre-registered to an account that they send you the passwords to.
I'm way out of my depth here.
Can someone link to a legit thingy? Pretty please.... 😘

Any PC capable of running Windows 11 almost certainly won't need a new licence key, even at hooky prices.
He's not talking about Windows though, he means Microsoft Office. As above, there's plenty of cheap options, most of which will likely work. I'd posit that most people don't actually need full MS Office for home use, they just think / assume they do, but that's hard to argue against when it's your partner so it's the easiest choice.
Alternatives: if you're considering Open Office, Libre Office is a better choice for home use.
The web-based version of MS Office in last year's colours is free online.
There's always Google's offerings (I found the Google suite to be preferable to MS's online offering, YMMV).
If you just want it to knock out the occasional letter, Wordpad (already installed on your computer) is capable enough.
Many workplaces / educational establishments offer free or cheap routes into MS Office via their bulk licensing, that might be an avenue worth pursuing (it's why I didn't take up my own PSA linked above, I already have it through work).

It's also not 60EUR/month, more like 70/yr for one person or 100/yr for 5. If there are two of you needing the license then it's really not a bad deal. This is especially true if you keep all sorts of stuff that you care about on your machine - photos, cvs, essays and you only bother to back them up every 5 years. OneDrive may not be a proper backup but it is still 5 gazillion times better than nothing at all

... and is free for something like 5GB of storage. It's enabled by default (I think?) if you sign in to Windows using a Microsoft account.
he means Microsoft Office
Yeah, I think I do.
Or if you are after Office 2021 Pro £7:
Is that a one time £7 quid for ever and ever?
MS Office for home use, they just think / assume they do, but that’s hard to argue against when it’s your partner so it’s the easiest choice.
She needs it for PowerPoint occasionally and wants/needs to know that whatever letterhead design or layouts she sends open up the same on her clients computer as she sent it... Think that means OpenOffice and the like won't/don't always do that.

Yeah... Getting confused with Adobe Creative Suite... If anyone has a legit workaround on that I'm all ears.

Yep. If she is doing paid work then it just isn't worth the risk. The Open/Libra office stuff is good but sometimes isn't exactly the same.
☝ that.
Slight hijack. I need (wife needs) office for her Mac desktop pro. When I looked on Amazon last night the windows ones were £7 the Mac ones were around £60.
Anyone had the £7 for a Mac? Can you post a link please.

Have you tried looking on some of the sites already posted above?
Finally got around to do this. Her device was 4 OS's out of date, it's taken some head scratching to get it to update without the updater app being installed.
So, now I have the software key. Just need to download the mac version.
Thanks for this. Hopefully my quiet life will now resume.
