Hello there

I bought a lenovo laptop from dabs a few weeks ago and it came with windows 8.

I hate it, is there anyway that I can put windows 7 on it without having to buy a copy? Such as emailing dabs/lenovo/microsoft and telling them I hate their operating system and want to "downgrade", since I have effectively already paid money for a licence.

Or, anyone selling a copy of windows 7?

All the best

Davey T

I may be wrong, but I believe you can make W8 look and behave like W7. Someone around here probably knows for sure.

Is it a Pro or Home license? The former covers you for Windows 7 downgrades.

It just says "Windows 8" - Im assuming home, I guess I'd have to have paid extra for pro.

Ive already made it look like normal windows by installing some sort of classic skin.

But the apps piss me off and it doesnt recognize my phone either.

Treat yourself to a Win 8 for dummies style book and embrace change. It's really quite good.

Does the laptop have a webcam installed?

Make sure you are in a reasonably bright room.
Enable the webcam.
Hold the phone close to the laptop.
Then say the words "this is my phone".

No need to thank me - I'm an IT expert.

Personally I would persevere. Lack of start button is the only thing which has annoyed me, fixed that with classic shell.

Also Windows 8.1 is on the way (free upgrade) on October 17th and should bring some improvements (like native return of the start button)

Regarding not recognising the phone, might be nowt to do with the OS. You need to understand what the root cause of the problem is.

Do what most do with windows and skip every other version. Win 7 is more expensive than 8 as they are not trying to give it away.
If not linux is really good 🙂
In what way is it not recognising your phone? as a usb?

🙂

I have noticed that versions of windows have alternated between good and shite since Windows 2000 (which was fairly good I remember), then Millenium was shite and so on.

Yeh, doesnt recongise my phone at all, doesnt even look like there's any drivers available for it. Although I've never used drivers before anyway, it normally just recognizes it as a "mass storage device"

It's actually difficult to get hold of windows 7 nowadays. You have to root around a bit. They must have seen an increase in people buying it when windows 8 came out. 😉

Windows 2000 was probably the worst windows ever. 😉 It was certainly the most insecure.

On your phone,in settings, enable USB Debugging.Windows should then recognise your phone as an external drive.

Try classic shell, you can skin win 8 so it looks and acts a lot more like win 7. Worked for me when I got a new desktop with win 8 on it.

If it's not a touchscreen laptop why do they put bloody Windows 8 on it?
Pisses me off that they've designed it for touchscreen and it's crap on everything else. (I do like it on the phone and touchscreens I might add)

Yeh, I've tried that, plus lots of other stuff and it doesnt work. On my old PC, it only worked on some USB ports and not on others. Perhaps that's the case with all the USB ports on my new laptop? Would installing new USB prots drivers help?

I have classic shell, I still hate the thing though.

From what I hear 8.1 isn't the fix all that we are hoping for!

It's mainly a set of tweaks rather than anything radical.. I think they're definite improvements (you can download the preview now) but if you hated it before I don't think there's anything much that will change your mind.

The start button is back but it just takes you to the application list under the 'modern' interface.

+1 for Windows 8 being shit and it not just being a case of having to get used to it
As for getting Windows 7 - not sure, most MS licences come with downgrade rights but I only really deal with server stuff. In your situation I'd email Lenovo first of all to ask about options, assuming they do it then it will likely still cost you £20-50 for 'media'.

What phone do you have? Newer version of android do not show up as mass storage it's now "MTP" although it should have auto-installed the software. Might be security settings.

It's a Huawei Ascend G300. I can plug it in to charge from the USB ports, but there's never a glimmer of the computer recognizing it.

I'll have a look at securtiy settings, although I have tried it with some "allow third party drivers" settings enabled/disabled and it still didnt work.

Check phone settings. Mine doesn't get recognised immediately by the OS, but goes in to charge-only mode. Then on the phone it asks if you want to charge or connect, etc. and I think just shuts up and stays in charge-only if you don't respond within 30sec or something.

Ok,apparently you need to install the USB drivers for Windows to see the phone.I found them here:

http://www.newzipopenerfun.com/gb/say/?adnm=28174786025&i=s&grid=Yellow&lg=EN&cc=GB&clg=en&c=1&d=0&cid=_509773421&kw=win7&mt=&mn=huaweig300.com&ct=&nt=D&expr=&ap=none&dv=c&color=yellow&agid=_5681531978

I used this as part of a rooting process and all seems ok so far.

HTH
