Looking for a tiny bit of advice. I'm just finishing setting up a laptop for my mother (typical oap computer user, a bit of light internet, the odd email and occasional letter) remotely via teamviewer*. I've just installed Office 2010 on it. I'm a mac user though and have no experience of Windows 8 apart from setting up this laptop - is it worth using Outlook or are the built in Mail, people and calendar apps just as good/better once you get used to them? She has an Iphone not a windows phone if that makes a difference from an integration perspective.
thanks
* teamviewer - why did it take my this long to find it - no more talking on the phone whilst closing your eyes and trying to imagine what they are seeing and clicking on whilst helping numpty friends/relatives with minor computer issues.
The app / metro version of Outlook is horrible - the only reason to use it would be to avoid the cost of a business office suite.
Install Outlook '10 and put a link to it on the task bar - clicking on the outlook icon on the metro screen takes you to the app version even if you've got the full version installed.
thanks- it seems that detiling windows 8 seems a popular move. She is used to outlook 2007 from her old xp desktop so I guess it would be recognisable to her. I just remember outlook being really laggy with imap email accounts.
Can't she just use Gmail?
Never use an app for mail just the web based interface. Use Outlook in work.
Windows live mail works fine for me
Can't she just use Gmail?
She's a BT email user so could use their webmail and does from time to time. Only snag is she lives in an area with truly awful broadband - like dial up speed awful half the time. Offline access to old emails without waiting an age for it to upload again is nice.
If she's used to XP, you can reduce the impact of Windows 8 by installing ClassicShell. It's a free download and will make Windows 8 much more like a traditional windows desktop. I've installed it for my mother (88).
