I’ll try and be brief here.

Originally the PC had win 8 and I upgraded to win 10.

Win 10 started running badly so tried a reinstall which failed.

I reinstalled win 8 following the ‘one click fix’ instructions in the manual.

I downloaded and ran the win updates troubleshooter as updating win 8 on this pc has always been temperamental.

Tonight win 8 forces me to restart to install updates which have again failed.

Pc informs me of failure and says ‘reverting changes’ which for about the forth time has failed leaving me with the only option of again reinstalling win 8.

Anyone have a fix? I don’t believe this is a hardware problem. Thanks.

Can you start Windows 8 and then download Windows 10 via the media creation tool?

Then just install a fresh copy of Windows 10

So...updating Win8 was troublesome..after upgrading to Win10 started running badly...Win 10 reinstall fails..reverting to Win8 now fails to install updates. Sounds like a dodgy HD or maybe driver problem. I'd try a different disk if you have one, if not wipe the disk and install Win10 via bootable USB.

I’ll try and do 10 again and if that doesn’t work I’ll maybe take it to someone to look at it. Ta.

Can I suggest you download ultimate boot cd (google it). Follow instructions to make bootable cd or memory stick.
Run the tools and test your hard disk and memory.
Sounds like one of the two may well have errors.

I’m not using a disc to install if that makes any difference? Just using the recovery function for 8 then downloading 10 from Microsoft.

USB is faster than disc, that's the only practical difference.
