Like a mug I did windows updates .. this seems to have screwed up my legal software (specifically Adobe CS8 and Corel Suite 11)

As far as I can tell these are caused by the Visual C Lib....
I know sod all about windows but is there any way to fix this?

Corel and Adobe are probably busy making sure their software works on other software that isn't 3 versions out of date and no longer supported.

Install windows 10 and stop screwing about would be my advice.

The Visual C / C++ libraries are a bit weird in that you can install multiple concurrent versions simultaneously. This is so that an application that requires it gets whatever specific revision it needs with all the quirks it might happen to have. Diagnosing this sort of issue is going to be a mare as you'll likely have a dozen versions installed.

The fix, such as it is, would be to uninstall / reinstall the applications which should also reinstall the required runtime libs. But really as above, you're running an unsupported OS and problems like this are only ever going to get worse. Plus it's a case of 'when' rather than 'if' for some nasty malware infection, it's essentially a time bomb (doubly so with your laissez-faire approach to updates). Get it upgraded to W10.

I am pretty sure Adobe CS (last version is CS6 which is from 2012) will not run under W10. Corel 11 is 18 years old I think so that also might not work!

So possibly will need new software if upgrading to W10. Alternatively could try running an earlier version of W7 or even XP in a virtual machine with no net access!!

As above, upgrade if you can..

You may be able to diagnose missing / incompatible DLLs using Dependency Walker.

Holy shit! I didn't even look at that.

Corel 11 lists compatibility as "98, Me, NT 4, 2000, XP" - it's frankly astonishing that it's worked as long as it has, half of it is probably 16-bit! The current version, by way of comparison, is Corel 22.

I think it's time to spend some money or look for alternative applications.

... you might get away with using System Restore to roll back to before you installed the updates. If you take that route though, the very first thing I'd be doing would be to isolate it from the Internet.

It's not really so bad. The only time I let it connect was updates. The only reason I have it is for the legal versions of stuff I purchased.

I find it quite strange people would install an update without source code but horses for courses.

My graphics card died so I ended up having to upgrade to get Windows drivers but perhaps I should have just virtualised.

I think it’s time to spend some money or look for alternative applications.

I don't have any money. Certainly not anything approaching upgrading these.
Perhaps the easiest is a clean XP install?

Sounds like Affinity has what you need!...

...free trials are available.

If I wasn't so tied into Adobe they are very good alternatives and I'd happily use.

Photoshop CS6 64 bit occasional user here. Works fine on Win10 2004 (build 19041.508). Still surprisingly capable and doesn't mean I need to pay every month for a subscription when some months I'll never use it and the months when I do it'll only be a handful of times. No doubt it will break some day, but that day isn't now... *shrugs*

I find it quite strange that people would still be running software released in 2002, but here we are. (-:

It’s not really so bad.

The thing is, you're no longer receiving security patches. At all. So you're hanging your arse out of the window for the first 0-day to come along and cryptolock your machine. And that's just the OS, all your applications and support apps (like, say, the C++ runtime) are likely to be similarly vulnerable. How much work is there on there, have you got 18 years worth of artwork backed up anywhere?

If you have to run Windows 7 or, saints preserve us, XP then I'd be using that machine for nothing else and disconnecting it from the LAN with extreme prejudice. You may well "only" be connecting it to the outside world for updates but that's enough; if you were to spin up XP SP2 then you'd likely be infected with a drive-by in as long as it takes you to type "XP service pack 3" into IE, let alone download it.

I don’t have any money.

I don't know what you use these apps for or how heavily but surely there must be cheaper / free alternatives. Probably more feature-rich than once-premium software that's over a decade old too.

Not really my area of expertise, my artistic ability extends to occasionally cropping or annotating pictures in Paint.net so I'll leave that for others to comment on.

Perhaps the easiest is a clean XP install?

For some value of "easy." Marrying up a licence key with an ISO that will accept it is an abject pain in the posterior.

or looking for a job when you must have a MS word CV and they reject a PDF or OO converted one.
It's not like it's rocket science to strip out the product/version ID's but I don't want to then not have a legal serial # and by the time I've done that I can open and save as.

Anyway.. see the concentration thread. I managed to get to nearly 53 without using any version of windows for the last 20 decades... I have zero interest in it/enthusiasm and that makes it a very hard slog for me to understand it. I'm so far behind .. the last Windows machine I really used was in 2000 when I had to use Win98 for a TV card.

Well the whole thing with Windows is you generally don't need to be interested or proficient in IT to use it, what hardware is this all running on?

You can uninstall individual Windows Updates (in Win7 via Control Panel>Programs & Features>Installed Updates) although as someone else mentioned System Restore might be a better bet (assuming it's enabled).

Well the whole thing with Windows is you generally don’t need to be interested or proficient in IT to use it,

So.. I "upgraded" .. now it's installed lots of crap I have no idea how to remove or what it does (or if it even can be removed).

Most of it seems to want to be connected to the internet and its going crazy with nagware.

I've no idea what is a potential virus and what is some "feature" trying to tunnel and my firewall is going ape so it's now unplugged from the internal network. I can see a lot of hours sat working out what the heck is going on ... I've no idea how someone not proficient in IT would do that. My firewall log is exploding .. I'll run out of storage sooner or later but my quick glance this morning and it's full of outgoing.

I'm pretty disinterested ... I just feel people shouldn't have to do this. I'd rather be riding my bike or fettling.

From first glance waking up to this confusing new world it seems to have installed a browser, mail client and wants to connect to my phone (which it's going to struggle as it doesn't seem to realise there is no Wifi or Bluetooth) .. it's got some camera stuff ... I need to deinstall .. something about Weather... news, spotify, "films and TV" some stuiff about X box (it's a damned endless list)

So currently I can't print without rendering something and putting it onto a secure PC connected to the internal network and I can't access any of my files.
If I can actually get rid of stuff I can set up the firewall to DENY ALL and then let through specifics.

Photoshop does however seem to be running OK....

what hardware is this all running on?

2x Q6800 on a MSI motherboard of that era. It used to mainly run various types of math models.

I started deinstalling though I'm not sure how much I trust the MS deinstall.
The powershell removal of cortana was suspiciously easy. I've got a long list already and thats only the stuff put in my face.

During install I had to agree to sending diagnostic information to MS and I need to sort that out as a priority before I can even think about opening ports.

generally don’t need to be interested or proficient in IT to use it

Is there some sort of quick guide?
I'm severely disinterested....I just want to be able to use a few old programs, print and access my storage.

My only experience with W10 is installing it as a VM (Parallels) on my Mac. Like you it's only to run a specific piece of software, doesn't need net access etc. Downloaded & installed with a single click from the VM software. Don't know if it's a special no-bloat version, but I don't get any of that shite that you mentioned!

Win10 is much easier to set up than Win7 because they've changed the update process. With Win7, you'd have to wait for it to install every single update sequentially. By the time it had been out for a few years, that was hundreds of updates, so you basically had to just leave it overnight to sort itself out.

Win10 uses cumulative updates, so it just installs the latest update and everything is done. However, it does bug you a bit with preferences regarding monitoring and stuff. Microsoft aren't spying on you in the way conspiracy nutters think, but it is a bit irritating until you turn it all off.

Is there some sort of quick guide?

Googling "Windows quickstart guide" would be an obvious starting point.

I don't want to turn it off I want to remove it.
From my simplistic view unless I remove the ability to do something it can just be switched back on or used for other purposes.

I don't even know where to start with this... my firewall log is so long I don't even know what to prioritise or how to do the most basic stuff in windows like configuring routes or NAT. It won't even let me uninstall Edge or some XBox stuff ??

When I had a work mac it was easy to just edit a few familiar files albeit in a BSD location... whereas I have no idea where to start in Windows. Same with every device I've had to use for the last 25 years..

It feels like being thrown back 25 years but I don't have the interest (or will) to learn it.

I think the biggest problem is you

You keep repeating you aren't interested etc, yet what you are trying to do is fairly advanced (do you really thing the average user will even know what a firewall log is, let alone how to read it, or what to do with it).

The average user keeps their stuff up to date, which would avoid all of the issues you are having.

Its exactly the same with the Apple ecosystem. If you want to do something the "Apple" way, it will work perfectly. If you want to try and get away from "the Apple way" then good luck!

What tomnavman said.

Microsoft is a professionally managed company that makes most of its money from large corporations and government departments that are extremely sensitive about security. Microsoft have no interest in spying on people in the way that the tinfoil hat brigade think. Your data is of zero interest to them except for troubleshooting and targeting ads. You can turn most of that stuff off if you spend 15 minutes Googling about setting up Windows. You can install another browser if you want, but if you're worried about data privacy, I think you'll find that you pretty much have to stay completely off the internet. It's not a Microsoft thing, it's an internet thing.

This. For someone proudly not interested you seem excessively interested in fiddling with it. The solution really is "ignore it." Exactly what do you need to configure routes and NAT on it for? This time yesterday you only needed it to run an eighteen year old art package.

You can't uninstall Edge, big whoop, You haven't been able to uninstall the default Microsoft browser in over two decades. What harm does it do? Did you pull your hair out because you couldn't remove Internet Explorer? Yes, technically the more stuff that's installed the larger your potential attack footprint, but you demonstrably don't care about that.

I see two issues with this line of thinking.

Firstly it's not functionality you can just remove. It's like arguing that you have a TV you can turn on and off but that's not good enough and you want to remove the power switch. Your choice is yes or no and you're getting frustrated because you can't find a third option.

Secondly, and I'm loathe to tell you this because you won't like it, major Windows updates are ostensibly full reinstalls of the next version. The current "Windows 10" is several releases on from the original, if they'd stuck with a traditional naming convention we'd be closer to Windows 20 by now. If you obsess over surgically removing every last facet of the OS that you don't use, you'll be doing it again every six months ad infinitum.

I'm not proudly not interested... I'm just not interested.
I'm not interested in reality TV either.... but I still might want to watch an old David Attenborough documentary.

Exactly what do you need to configure routes and NAT on it for? This time yesterday you only needed it to run an eighteen year old art package.

Because suddenly my Firewall is going mad

So it's either revert to a USB stick fileshare and print or connect it to the internal network.

Anyway, after yesterday and the general opinion being "upgrade" I did.
Both my "latest" bikes are 25yr old designs... (OK with tapered headtubes) and they still do what I want them to do. I just went to the click and collect ... picked up some ARD's and locked the door when I left then locked the bike up outside.

I don't have a huge interest in locks (and any interest I do have is picking them for a laugh) but I recognise the need to use them, even to lock up the 25yr old design bike.

In fact the damned bikes set this whole thing off .. I just want to design print some custom badges... I had a play on my mates Kenevo on Friday... bit of a laugh going up the pushup but I don't feel a huge need to stick a motor on the Trailstar because of that...

Anyway .. when I locked the front door I didn't say "Alexa lock the door" (or Siri or any of that..) I stuck in a key and turned it... gave it a push to check etc.

yet what you are trying to do is fairly advanced (do you really thing the average user will even know what a firewall log is, let alone how to read it, or what to do with it).

The average user keeps their stuff up to date, which would avoid all of the issues you are having.

It really isn't... I just want to be able to lock the door without being forced to use voice control.
It's like you are saying "people don't need to use keys anymore, they don't understand them and they are too complicated" .. I'm just comfortable with my keys and what I understand and I have limited ability to learn new stuff that doesn't interest me. I understand IPTABLES and text editors..I don't understand a GUI that doesn't let me see what I'm editing... it's not going to get better as I get (even) older.

When I lock the door I like to be able feel the click and test it...

You haven’t been able to uninstall the default Microsoft browser in over two decades. What harm does it do?

If you order a secure key from ABUS they won't deliver it to your billing address.

I’m not proudly not interested… I’m just not interested.

Leave it alone then.

Because suddenly my Firewall is going mad

So what?

Modern software is inherently more complex than something written eons ago. The OS aside, any application worth its salt today will auto-update itself and this self-evidently will generate Internet / network traffic. This is something that was almost unheard of in XP days and it's a Very Good Thing.

Windows 10 comes with a bunch of telemetry but it's all configurable. You're asked if you want it as part of the install and if you ran through the setup with your eyes closed you can change it later in Settings.

I just want to be able to lock the door without being forced to use voice control.

No-one is forcing you to use voice control, rather you seem to want voice control to not exist.

I don’t understand a GUI that doesn’t let me see what I’m editing…

I still don't understand what you think you need to edit. Why do you need static routes and NAT to connect to a printer?

Yep and the Kenevo is way more complex than my Trailstar and I can see why one would want the facility to update. It's just I am/was perfectly happy with most of my 1990's technology.

Leave it alone then.

Sort of wish I had but it feels like the cat is out now.
I can't even remember why I downloaded any updates in the first place....the PC just sat there most of the time powered off but I suspect it started when I had to update iTunes to backup the OH's phone.

Either way I need to find a job and not having a basic familiarity with Windows 10 isn't a good start...

Pretty much, yes.

If you are objecting to something that by your own admission you have no inclination to even begin to understand then there's nothing further I can add. Either you need to be receptive to learning or you need to trust in the advice that people who better understand these things are freely giving to you, otherwise you're wasting both our time and yours.

Pretty much everything you've posted here is just a pathological antipathy towards Windows. Which is fine and all, we all have our preferences. But that being the case, if I were you I'd flatten it all and install Ubuntu LTS, Inkscape and GIMP.

You are mixing my pathological dislike of Microsoft (who have ruined the lives of many old friends) up with every version of Windows I ever used (with a partial exception being NT4) being crap. MS as a company is despicable but that wouldn't stop me using a good product the stole/ripped off. FFS I'd use Sky if it was the only way to watch the DH WC and I use Amazon frequently.

All my internet facing computers are running linux... as is my original XBox..(though it's in a cupboard for posterity rather than use given an old pseudonym is in the usb kernel module).

Truth be told I'm not interested in the linux PC's either. I just maintain them because it's what I've always done. They don't have pedals or wheels...which is about all holds my attention nowadays.

I have no idea HOW ... I learn how suspension works by pulling it apart, I learn maths by deriving it myself and I learn an OS from source code.
It's the only way I know how and much as it's always been the case it's more so as I get older.

Back before I was washed up and useless the people I worked with who are or were global experts accessed Threshold 1. I don't keep in touch (at the advice of my counsellor) so I'm not in a position to ask them what happened inbetween security wise. I'm also strongly advised to keep away from my previous professional life...

Ultimately I just wanted to play with some software I purchased (a long time ago) and do some logo's because I thought it would be therapeutic and maybe something I could do.

Were that true, I've offered you the best solution I can think of. But you don't, you want to fanny about with routing tables for christ only knows what reason and are now shouting at clouds because it's not 1999 any more. Pull the network connection, all your firewall problems will go away and you can draw logos to your heart's content.
