My Dad wants to do something about his crappy old Vista PC - looks like you can buy a W7 OEM license for just over a tenner (yes, really) which should give him the W10 upgrade option. The W7 is OEM license though, which I *think* he should be able to use but I'm not exactly sure.

However, it's a single core 2GHz Athlon with 2Gb, so I'm not sure it's worth the effort even if he puts a SSD in it.

Legally, you can't. Technically, you can.

For ten quid, I would. Slam another 2Gb in whilst you're at it.

The oem means it's locked to one pc. Not sure how that translates through the upgrade process. Check the windows spec list but I think that should cover it. 2 GB more ram would probably help a lot though and be really cheap.

Its also technically illegal to sell OEM versions without their matching PC.

I know because Microsoft got in touch with me when I tried to flog some in eBay!

Plenty still do though.

It's supposed to anyway but in practice it doesn't seem to happen. Maybe I've just been lucky? I've tripped the reactivation process a couple of times on mine and both times they OKd it even though I think the only original part is the DVD rom 😆

crucial.com/uk to find out what you need. I've almost certainly got spares of that vintage.

I don't see the point in "stealing" software on a technicality like this.

If it's not legal, why not just download it illegally?

I guess for a tenner it might save you the hassle/risk of dodgy websites, etc. but still.

Spares would be welcome. I'd have to check as it's not my PC and it's not here.

Because you wouldn't have activiation hassle, it'd be a legit license key.

I ran a HP OEM Win7 licence for a bit, it tripped the authenticate screen but went through on the phone line okay. Upgraded it to 10 no worries. As I understand it once you've gone through the upgrade procedure you're given a new licence so it's like it never happened.

Just remember to go through the upgrade process first even if you're planning on a clean install of W10 from a USB. That way the PC will be registered on Microsoft's servers as legit and will then automatically re-authenticate online after any clean install.
