You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
It’s been a while since I had one of these, but after running a windows update on Thursday and then shutting down for a long weekend, I cannot get my PC going today. It either endlessly recycles between the start screen and going black with no option to access anything, or goes straight to frozen start screen with no options to access anything.
Can’t enter Task Manager via Ctrl-Alt-Del, so just repeatedly switching off via power button and trying again, without success.
Anyone recommend a solution to get out of this please?
Try windows safe mode
as above, safe mode then roll back the install. Usually windows is pretty good at this. I suspect you're trying to install rollup package 20H2? I'd wait. I've had loads of issues with it & suspect the device drivers are to blame. You could probably set whichever component it is to be disabled and then install a driver after upgrade, or just wait a month for the drivers to be incorporated into the package itself.
Thanks, Dissonance. Couldn’t figure how to get to that stage, it’s been so long since I had an issue like this
And yes, hot fiat, just checked and it was 20H2 right enough. Tried all troubleshooting and repair options before rolling back and before seeing your post, but just about back where I was before this install now. Fingers crossed
So, after putting off this update fir months, last night Windows decided enough was enough and I’m right back where I started. Except now I know how to get back to before this problematic 20H2 update.
No fixes seem to have been applied that make it work, and I can’t identify which driver might be the problem.
Any ideas on how to identify the problem driver (if this is what it is)?
Do you see an option for boot mode with logs or detail? There always used to be an option where every action was listed on screen. By watching it try to start a few times you can see if it fails on the same step every time.
Are you familiar with looking over your windows installation using System logs?
Right click Windows button, select Computer Management and look at Event Viewer.
It might be that a driver critical error appears in the right time window and with a bit of digging around you could find out what is happening.
It is a bit of a time consuming process though and you will spend hours chasing your tail but, sometimes it is a good pointer.
Possibly first is to try the manufacturers web site of your PC or motherboard and see if there are any factory firmware updates.
Top tip from MSP on this thread here - once you can get back into Windows of course.
Had exactly the same last week on my daughters Lenovo- had to roll back to the previous MS update.
I've got one at the moment (2021-07 cumulative update) which will not install. Tried it 6 different ways, including downloading it direct from MS and doing it that way, but no dice.
Apparently important files are missing so it can't apply it; it's this error: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/490505/windows-update-kb5004237-failed-with-error-0x800f0.html
Wondering if anyone's had any luck fixing a similar problem?
DezB's link seems to be broken. This is the correct link:

👍
Thanks, all. Rolled back to the earlier version and now desperately trying ot catch up with all the work I've missed yesterday afternno while the update installed and then getting it removed today. I'll get on to some of the suggested fixes later, but it strikes me that to know if they have worked, I'll need to do the install of the update again, check it out, and then uninstall if it can't be fixed? A job for a rainy weekend, I think! But I will give it a go as soon as possibile and see what happens
Thanks again for all the help 🙂

No problemo...
You can thank me later. 😉
I can no longer activate Windows despite pre installed on my Acer. If I enter the code on the label stuck to the machine it gets rejected and tells me its a dodgy copy!

Is it a corporate machine that has been set up with the Enterprise version of Windows? That works differently from the regular versions. AFAIK, it won't activate with the normal licence code, but you should be able to wipe it and install the regular version.
Another possibility is if you've substantially upgraded the machine (new motherboard, CPU, and graphics card, for example), it won't be recognized as the same machine.

No hardware upgrades. Bought retail and it came with Windows 7 and upgraded fine to 10. Its only recently the upgrades have been acting like viruses. Maybe its a 32 bit thing.

Ive had to set up a new windows machine today, I was sooooo close to just tossing it out the window. I am actually surprised at how much less intuitive it is now than it was say 10 years ago - it seems Microsoft must have fired their UX team a good long while back. Should have just bought him a Mac and dealt with the extra cost.
