Upgraded 3 of the family machines so far this weekend...it been a nice free way to rid all of them from the junk they came installed with. All of them are running much better than delivered from new (although I swapped the HDD for SSD's on two of the machines).

Looks like Microsoft have taken on board that the preinstalled software has pretty much trashed the average consumer experience for Windows and appear to be proving a nice work around with the new activation system.

So far pretty impressed with Win10, can't say I've been impressed with Bing, but easy enough to avoid it. Other than that, all seems good. Appears to work really nicely for driving a big TV for internet and Spotify...much better than Win 8 in this respect.

Just upgraded an Asus laptop over 8.1. Needed a new touchpad driver, but that was all (and a mouse because the touchpad wouldn't work initially)

I've got the pointer stick driver installed on my Vaio now but whilst everything appears fine with it, the middle button won't work for scrolling. Arse.

Also made the start menu a lot snappier by removing all the live tiles I don't want. You can also convert them to icons instead of actual live tiles by right clicking and turning off live tile.

Any word on when Win10 is coming to the phones? After the early death of my Xperia I've been using a budget WinPhone, and (ignoring it's a bit slow) I'm quite liking it...

Think they're talking about late Oct/early Nov. I know a few people who swear by Windows phones; they're meant to run well on fairly modest hardware. Thing that puts me off is the lack of app availability, which is a chicken vs. egg thing.

You can always just re-install a clean version of the original OS if you want to get rid of the junk, which is likely to result in at least as much improvement in performance and likely less trouble in terms of driver support. Not that I'd want to stop you using W10, but there is another way. Windows 8.1 installer is available direct from MS, W7 http://www.pcsteps.com/45-download-windows-7-iso-legally-free/ (I've downloaded torrents using the links there and they're legit according to the checksums).

And they're not always quite as good - the Twitter and Facebook clients, for example, are OK, but the Android versions are slightly better. But the OS is quite nice to use, and I'm hoping Win10 will mean the platform will suddenly become a lot more interesting for developers.

Yes, and Microsoft have produced tools to make posting apps easier, too.

Really? I get half a dozen updates some weeks and I don't have that many apps. I find that most big apps are there, I have Barclays and Halifax ones for banking; it's mostly the specialist ones that are missing. Remote control and sharing apps for Olympus cameras, foe instance, or the OS mapping app.

There are many many third party apps though to mimic the official ones. Strava and Starbucks are good examples where the unofficial replacements are pretty good. However some unofficial ones are crap as you'd expect.

The cross platform thing will be interesting as there are I think MORE apps for WP than for W10. There's a Netflix one for phone for starters. Then again, sometimes there isn't much point. The facebook app is the same as the phone one, which means that although quicker than the website it doesn't show comments on posts until you click on them, which is something designed for small mobile screens. Then again, it means you can shrink the app down to a small size and it still works nicely. I suspect this is something developers will take some time to get the best out of.

They do update, but from what I've seen the iOS and Android versions update earlier.

Loving W10 so far, but just found out that my printer isn't supported - good excuse to buy a new one!

Well so far I like Win 10, however I am having a lot of heat generated by my surface and the fan runs a lot more now, which is reducing battery life. Anyone else having this? Any idea if it can be fixed?

Same here - and the printer's over 7 years old and was starting to play up. But I still think it's a bit irritating you can't even use it as a "Generic Printer", which would have been handy for emergencies.

Aye, it's an old Canon MP220 so has no support. To be fair, it's not economical or that great, so replacing it with something a bit better.

Just making a guess at this: check your power saving settings. If it's already correct, maybe as a temporary measure try selecting a lower performance option while you find the real reason for the problem.

Apologies if this has been covered, but I have'nt got time to go through this whole thread now.
Since upgrading to W10 on a HP Pavilion, when I send it to sleep, on re opening the laptop it shuts down and I have to restart it, it also takes a while to restart then.
Any ideas?

Installed on launch onto Dell desktop from 7, all good, apart from when I switch on it stalls on boot up. Hold power button to switch it off, and then power on, it is always fine on 2nd go? Any ideas?

@cat69uk - that sounds like it could be caused by fast boot (which is actually hibernate in disguise) - If you can do a restart without problems; but a shutdown / power on fails then I'd give this a try:

I've an MP970 which plays quite happily with OSX via Bonjour, but doesn't seem to be quite so keen on Windows 10. Need to have a bit more of a play, I think.

Any consensus on in-place upgrade vs clean install?

There's not a lot of software or stuff on my big laptop, plus it has a second HD with all the data/photos etc on it, so would be relatively easy to do a clean install, but not as easy as an over-the-top.

in place has worked ok on all three devices I've done it on (old W7 PC, new W8.1 PC and 8.1 tablet) but the PCs both required some manual work to get them right - drivers for graphics card, network adapters, etc. Also, possibly down to the router (token assigned to old OS maybe?) but both failed to connect through ethernet for a couple of days after the install. The tablet was problem free.

Couldn't say but what actually drives the slowdown on OSs - it's usually updates isn't it along with unnecessary software. The former wouldn't be an issue on an upgrade presumably and the latter you can manually manage if necessary.

well the upgrade is a series of huge updates...

I did an upgrade and it seems considerably quicker than the Win8 it replaced (Samsung i5 netbook thingy .. t&00? it's not here to check). SSD disk, not convinced a clean install would make a significant difference (but there wasn't much cruft on it beyond manufacturer apps).

Took 3 attempts to do it though, it would hang on the hardware detection.. for some reason 3rd time lucky - I'd just kicked it off again whilst I looked into the error code!

Hm. Well this W7 is relatively recent and it was done clean. Might be worth it.. IIRC getting all the drivers for the special buttons and crap was a bit of a ballache.

FWIW molgrips - I just updated the office machines - 9 various machines from new i7 power thing for the architect to old Pentium clockwork thing. All of them have just worked, two did a qiuck 'ooh, I need this. Found it. Downloading'. All running fine.

Any one else having blurry font issues on programs that ran happily on W7?

Just fonts or graphics generally - that's what my newer PC looked like when I needed a new driver for the graphics card.

I think Windows 10 may have killed my pc! Since i installed it a month ago things have been sticky and slow and today on start up I'm just getting a blank screen. Wish i hadn't bothered 🙁 I've no idea where to start and may take it in to a repair shop to see if it can be resolved.

Upgraded 2 laptops and 9 desktops to Windows 10. All went very smoothly only the Lenovo Yoga Laptop required some drivers to be downloaded from their website. All computers are noticeably quicker and for once no whinging from the users so quite impressed. Not so impressed with the the latest OSX update which keeps bringing up the spinny wheel of boredom.

Tricky to say, Glasgowdan. Blank screen could be video drivers, but you're a bit stuffed if it won't come on.

Flattened my separate 7 partition the other day, no regrets. This was a clean 10 pro install though so had absolutely nothing to tie it to the old build.

The first big patch is meant to be out tomorrow (though I've not seen an official announcement about that so far).
