You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I'm just going through the motions of installing it now, I have high expectations for the installation procedure and the OS in general - Do you think i'm going to be disappointed?
Anyone else making the jump today? Or are you going to hold off until they work out all the "kinks"?
I'll be going for it tonight hopefully, can't be any worse than 8.1 surly
If I wasn't in a hurry to get some work done I'd be trying it. I would have thought on older machines, especially desktops it should have no trouble with the hardware.
If you try to do an in place upgrade though, it probably depends how much fluff from Saturn's rings has collected in the registry, as to whether it pulls it off without a hitch.
OP did you get an email to initiate the upgrade or can you do so yourself? I registered to be notified but not had anything. Not in any great rush just wondered. Ta.
*watches with interest*
Hardly use the home PC anymore. Android on the hand-held. Sorry, Mr Gates, I think you're receding into the distance...

As a counter balance at home:
Win Laptop
Win phone
Win Xbox
Android phone
Android laptop
Work:
Win laptop
Once you realise that Windows can tie together everything from Xbox to your work computer you understand it still has massive reach.
You can force the upgrade process start by following these instructions;
Windows 10 upgrade
Hardly use the home PC anymore. Android on the hand-held. Sorry, Mr Gates, I think you're receding into the distance...
I find phones and tablets pretty second rate for anything that requires more than 1 word to be typed, IMO they will not be replacing pc's any time soon.
I've tried it in a VM, it looked ok but didn't feel massive urge to upgrade at the moment.
I'l be waiting for a few months at least before I take the plunge as I'd like the early adopters to iron out a few bugs for me 😀
Just contemplating making the move now actually... I have a spare desktop machine by my feet that will run it handily, but my linux desktop works pretty damn well, so the urge is less.
Gaming might change my mind. Maybe.
And it will tie in better with things like the work Sharepoint setup but other than that...
I ripped an old drive out dead PVR just so I could install Win7 and be eligible for the free upgrade.
Several evenings later and I'm still fighting with Windows Update to persuade it to install all the updates I need to get to the Win10 registration. 👿
I'll not be in a rush to install Win10 though. I'll probably give it at least 6 months for the worst bugs to crawl out.
Hardly use the home PC any more. Android on the hand-held. Sorry, Mr Gates, I think you're receding into the distance
I think all tools have different uses and for me, a desktop or laptop still is very useful. I sue:
iPhone - Calls, texts and social media when I'm on the move.
iPad - Web browsing when on the move, notes in meetings, some basic presentation work
Laptop (at home) or desktop (at work) - Anything that involves lots of typing, heavier data stuff, browsing the web when looking at more complex sites.
Anyway, back on topic, I'm interested in this as I'm eligible for the upgrade and would like to hear others thoughts before diving in.
If you're happy with what you have now and you're not an early-adopter nerd then let it bed in a bit imo. They've done a pretty big beta but there's nothing like live testing to shake out issues. I can't see any reason to rush.
will give it 6 months, since there isn't planned to be an SP1 as such
but then I only have w8.1 for the sole purpose of clicking 1 icon to play a game (deleted all the others, except desktop). never got the invite thing, although I know it installed that update that's sposed to enable the notification.
Gonna 10 my ancient Centrino era laptop, will let you know how I get on. Its hardly used so day 0 isnt an issue. It runs 8.1 pretty well so doubt 10 will be much different
I've been running the preview in a VM for a couple of months now (I needed a test machine at work, figured I'd kill two birds with one stone).
In honesty, I think it's a non-issue. For all the trumpeting, it feels like evolution rather than revolution though I'm sure there's a lot gone on 'under the hood.' I'm not seeing any compelling reason to run out and upgrade from Windows 7 immediately, but I'm not seeing any compelling reason not to either (early-adopter risks aside).
That said, if I was on Windows 8.x I'd probably pull the trigger straight away, Windows 10 is basically Windows 8's less annoying younger brother. Actually, I know exactly what it is: Windows 10 is to Windows 8 as Windows 7 was to Vista.
Sorry, Mr Gates, I think you're receding into the distance
Breaking news, Bill Gates stepped down as Microsoft CEO over fifteen years ago. 😉
Well it won't upgrade because apparently the x800 isn't compatible. Oh well...
A very smooth upgrade process if I do say so myself.
I like the look of it already!
Colour me impressed.
Force install reservation:
Only concern I've currently got is that you've no control over Windows updates unless you're on an Enterprise version - this might cause us trouble at work, ie we only get the update when a client does and then their/our software has a problem.
Or am I wrong?
The beta was more or less a release. I'm not expecting any major nasties, but it would be prudent to hold off on any machines you actually do work on for now.
That said, if I was on Windows 8.x I'd probably pull the trigger straight away
Seconded.
This was my work "research" laptop (i.e. standalone, broadband), running 8.1.
Pulled the trigger very quickly.
My Atom based Vaio P is struggling lately - not necessarily with W7, it's a clean install, but with modern webpages.
I'll be trying it out asap though.
very easy process, done and dusted in an hour. Impressed so far, delighted the start button is back. Im almost free of all Apple related gadgets!
I'm probably going to do it on my "research" laptop as well... but in a month or so.
Hilarious stories of forced driver updates at arbitrary times are keeping me clear at the moment. My favourite so far is the guy doing a client presentation at the point that Windows decided it was time to install a new (bugged) graphics driver 😆
So, if my home laptop, the older laptop hooked up to the telly and the fairly old netbook are all on Vista, will they benefit from the upgrade?
Sorry, Mr Gates, I think you're receding into the distance...
Still have 90% odd market share vs 5% for apple...
I don't think Vista qualifies for the upgrade btw.
It does, I have the notification icon o in my, er, notification icon bit.
It does, I have the notification icon o in my, er, notification icon bit.
Nope sorry.
What are the qualifications for the free upgrade? The only requirements are that a) your device is compatible, and b) you’re running genuine Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows 8.1 (Update).
Can I get Windows 10 if I have a device running Windows XP or Windows Vista?
You may purchase Windows 10 from the Microsoft Store or other retailers and install it on your existing device running Windows XP or Windows Vista if your device meets the minimum spec requirements for Windows 10.

Oh 🙁
Are you sure it's Vista?
Try Control Panel > System & Security > System
Pretty sure it's Vista Home Premium. I'll check at home tonight.
The icon's definitely there, maybe it takes me to a page where I pay...
My W7 media PC is running the update as we speak. I've done it via chrome remote on my phone just to see if I can break it... 😉
83% done apparently.
If anyone uses Cisco VPN, be aware that Win10 has issues. Where I'm doing some work for sent out a mail stating no one should upgrade to 10
Mine's complete. Took an hour or so and despite the old computer, it seems to be working nicely. The new start button and compact metro/start menu is MUCH better than W8
My W7 media PC is running the update as we speak
Hope you're not using Media Center because the update will uninstall it.
No, MC was always rubbish 🙂 Just use standard programs for music, video, steaming. It's only a "media" PC by virtue of being under the TV really.
Anyone running windows through Parallels on a Mac and had the invite to upgrade for free yet? No icon in my toolbar for me yet 😥
Were did your license come from?
If you're missing the icon, run Windows Update in the first instance.
A genuine bought copy of Windows 7 home premium, but an OEM version. That might be the issue. Done all the updates - still no icon.
To be honest it's probably no big issue as I only use parallels/windows to run Solidworks.

Just reading about this.. Windows 10 for phones will not be Windows 10 for phones but actual full Windows 10! You can connect your phone to a display, keyboard and mouse and use it as a PC, and run your normal applications on it!
Holy cow!
You sure that isn't just the metro style apps from the store molgrips?
That's what I thought, but that's not what the Beeb article says.
Holy cow!
Yep, it's pretty cool and IMO for business at least makes the potential of seamless working between desktop, laptop, phone, tablet, a real and fairly straightforward possibility. Or even bring your own 'PC' which is they way I see it going.
This is of course assuming that it is the case - given MS's confusing info on who gets the free upgrade, it could be that it's completely wrong...
Just installing now - I haven't touched a beta, but I expect it to be a mish-mash of 7 & 8 rather than anything really new. I'll probably want to go back to 8.1.
Holy cow!
Yep, sounds insane, most phones will be saddled with Gigs of unused resource hogging code and run like a complete dog as a result.
So now I want a tiny portable screen and keyboard combo that I can pop my phone into.

That will be the future with your entire life store in one phone/basket then when you loss your phone someone else take over ... 😮
Except your life will all be in the cloud... your phone will just be a dumb terminal most of the time.
nemesis - MemberExcept your life will all be in the cloud... your phone will just be a dumb terminal most of the time.
Yes, then someone mess up cloud ... access denied you need to pay your rent. 😮
No pay rent no cloud. Now you are truly screwed. 😆
edit: My Win7 is running very smoothly at the moment so no hurry to upgrade/update to Win 10.
Does sound interesting but the release date of windows 10 for phones is less than clear to me. I know a preview is available but I'm not excited enough to suffer that pain until it is more polished.
No cloud, no need to pay rent as that'd all be in the cloud too 🙂
when you loss your phone someone else take over
How's that different to losing your laptop?

bugger 🙁

You still carry laptop around? My Dell laptop weights a ton. 😯
Yes, I do.
Plus, burglars carry other people's laptops around without them knowing.
I've seen a lot more HDD failures than cloud failures. A lot.
Full W10 on a phone working at a reasonable pace, with bluetooth keyboard/mouse and HMDI out could well be the bomb.

My Acer Ultrabook was bought so I could carry it round for work - otherwise they would have saved a fortune and bought me a desktop.
You guys are forgetting that most phones are ARM, not x86, so many of the programs will not run unless there is an ARM/WinRT port.

That seems to be the way they are heading - they already offer a headless Win10 embedded version (Win10 for IoT) on RaspberryPi (which is ARM-based) and releasing .NET on Linux and Mac, plus you have articles like this from 2012
My home pc doesn't want to play it seems the video card doesn't have a suitable driver so no update allowed.
I guess I wait to see if Nvidia decide to issue a new driver & try again

Can't you use integrated/motherboard graphics in the mean time?
If he's unfortunate enough to have it 😉
Other point: x86 is not going away. Yet.

Are your Nvidia card low end? What model is your Nvidia card? I am asking because I use a £30 Nvidia card in case I am force to upgrade. 😯
Has anyone taken it on a surface pro 2?
My colleague said he tried it and lost his wireless adapter and USB network adapter and had to revert back to 8.1. Has this happened to anyone else and how did you get it fixed?
chewkw
highend(ish) but old GeForce 7900GTX
Anyone else notice that Solitaire now has ads? You can pay them a monthly sub to remove them though - yipeee! (this is really gonna hurt my productivity). Copy sol.exe and cards.dll from Windows 7 before upgrading and they'll work as they always have though....
have downloaded win 10 also, but not being computer tech,do not know what the advantages are of it over win 8.1? the bottom of my desktop looks different now/as well as icons.
Laptop updated without much fuss, took about 60 mins in total (150meg connection, i5 with 8GB of RAM and a SSD)
A little tip, the longest part was copying files, so you might want to copy as much as poss onto an external drive before starting and copying it back afterwards
Laptop runs an NVIDIA GT640M and has not problem with Win10 - my home PC runs a GTX750Ti so I'm hoping it won't give me any issues.
So far, so hmmm - it looks quite cool with the black taskbar, MS Edge is okay, looks like a paired down Explorer. Opening any Office Suite Programme means restarting.
At the moment Windows refuses to activate, but it's not causing any problems.
do you have to wait for windows 10, my surface pro 3 says it can get it fine but I cannot see how to start the process it just says I will get notification when its ready
You can get tell it download now by using this tool:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
I didn't register for the update and despite being on 8.1 and fully up to date I don't have the icon in the bottom right corner, have I missed out on the free update? Can't find any info for if you haven't got the icon
updated my surface pro 3 this afternoon, not had chance to have much of a play, but the upgrade seems to have gone smoothly with no issues.
First impressions are that it doesnt feel like a massive change from windows 8.1, just like a minor update really. Its good to have a 'proper' start menu back though and not have to go to the full screen start menu anymore.
I've got the option of the update. Currently using Windows 7 on a 5 year old Dell.
2 daft questions -
1. Will my installed applications still be there after the upgrade ?
2. Is it worth going from 7 to 10 on my machine (subjective this one I suppose)
Have downloaded and installed on an HP stream 7; like it more than 8.1, but some oddness/bugs (can't download the new Twitter app from the store as it keeps generating an error code; work email (on *cough* Exchange 2007) works for a bit then decided it doesn't like the security policy)...
Also, it screwed up my carefully-constructed start screen, and I don't know how lock screen notifications are meant to work. The Edge browser is good; would like the address bar at the bottom though.
I dare say there will be a load of hot fixes in the next few weeks. And having to use desktop Skype is just annoying as the window doesn't resize when I open the keyboard window.
Conveniently, I'm away at work for two weeks; so, before I can get home and enthusiastically update the home machines, all the bugs and problems will have come to light and either been removed or remedied before I get to be frustrated...
Mine is coming up with unknown error code 8007003.
Time to start Googling.
