Fitting upvc windows, how difficult can it be? Looking at chopping out a large picture window and replacing with 2 smaller ones. I know I need a buildings inspector to check out the work and the glass/energy spec/vents need to comply, i'm reasonably competent having renovated a house previously.
Is there some sort of magic involved or is it just straightforward? Any tips/things to watch out for?
Its a pretty simple job for a DIYer. Only issue is they can be heavy so you may need two people. Can't think of any pitfalls other than getting the right size.
It’s very easy and you can do a much better job than a professional doing it in a rush.
The biggest thing to check for is if you have a lintel that supports all the brickwork above. Don’t assume there is one already.
I just blocked up the bottom of a patio door and installed a window and cut out below a window and installed a bifold door. I had a concrete lintel on the inner skin of brickwork but nothing supporting the outer skin. It would of originally been built on a structural timber frame. I had to prop the wall, cut bricks out at the sides, cut the mortar out the cavity and install a big steel angle. It was hard work but not complicated.
