Did anyone else watch the Williams v Tan match last night, great result for the underdog.
We thought the commentary was pretty biased in Williams favour and her winning was a foregone conclusion.

Watched the first half set before I had to go out. You could see Williams was going to have bother as soon as Tan started moving her about, so wasn't too surprised by the result.

Was a great match last night, every time you thought Williams was flagging and being worn down she fought back with sheer guts, power and instinct.

Thought Tan would buckle after the second set, she did so well to keep fighting back. One of the best games of tennis I've watched (in the context of casual grand slam only type watching)

Yep, great game.
I was never a fan of the Williams sister when they were in their prime - but now that night I really wanted SW to win.
Such as shame but she was certaibly struggling when moved around the court.

Watched it with my son who has probably never bothered with tennis before and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I was really pleased with the result. Whenever I watch Serena I wonder why her opponents don't just make her move around the court but actually she's more mobile than you think and of course she's not going to make it that easy. When she went 4-0 up in the tiebreaker I thought it was all over so fair play to Tan.

Agreed.

We thought the bias was unfair and really quite undermining of the win.

The post match interview with Lee McKenzie was really quite cringeworthy as Lee pushed for Tan saying she didn't expect to win. Really sad to see that leading approach.

Great match though. Some of SW's shots look like they had been fired out of a canon!

Agree with the other comments. Mrs BC was quite vexed at times by the apparently quite pro SW commentary team. I thought it was an excellent match and showed a lot of versatility of play and was definitely not just a slug fest. I suspect that Tan may struggle against some of the younger and fitter players as her game seems to lack any real punch but she is certainly able to generate a lot of spin. Great result for her though and the smile on her face was a joy when she won the match.

wendyball

Is there any need for this? Why take this negative attitude to it?

^ agree, totally irrelevant comment just to have a dig.

Anyway; this may be heresy.

Apart from one tournament in which draws opened up and ISTR it was also Covid affected, Emma R doesn't actually seem to be that good.

I mean clearly she's brilliant against the world as a whole but have we massively overstated her and in doing so there's too much to live up to. Facing down the barrel of a second round straight sets defeat against an unseeded lady ranked 45 places below her. Is this actually any FUN for a 19 y.o ?

This.
She had an amazing US Open but she's entirely overhyped and usually outplayed (as she was today).
I just wish they would stop referring to her as the US Open Champion..... Even though she is, somehow.

(But in a few years it could be a different story)

I think she got her big break a year or two too soon, and has struggled to come to terms with the hype and expectation since.

Though it's been a good year for British players so far, 9 through to the second round?

Another swipe at football? It's a real sport unlike that rubbish you follow. As is tennis.

on BBC now - "Andy Murray's back on his beloved centre court where sadly Emma Radacanu's run came to an end earlier"

Run? She won one match!

No real dominant performers in the womens game like the mens (Nadal, Djokovic etc). Rarely multiple major winners so Radacanu’s US Open win was not so outlandish given the way the draw opened up. Similarly her defeat today to someone ranked 40 odd places beneath her.

Feels like the annual day of reckoning for British tennis players, but a round further on than usual, so a better year I think overall.

Very well done.
I thought the Djokovic match was excellent also - an amazing fight back and lovely gesture at the end to give all the goodies in his bag away to the kids.

Whatever you may think of him, Djokovic is an incredible player.
The ginger Italian (really?!) was brilliant and has many years ahead of him.

I don’t find Novak very likeable, however, I think he’s far more capable of handing Kyrgios a hiding in the final than Norrie. I can’t stand Kyrgios so I’m happy to see Novak progress on the basis he’ll do the honours on Sunday.

Very impressed with Norrie’s tournament. Had some battles for sure and proved he’s getting close to mixing it at the top.

I did but that Covid / Aus Open shite really made me question his entitlement.

He can play though, of that there's no doubt. Relentless on serve, dogged on receiving, making Norrie fight for every game.

Mens semi a bit of a flop really

nope, the fact that he falsified his records, lied about his whereabouts and then expected 'But I'm Novak Djokovic' to be the solution.

By all means don't have the vaccine, free choice. As is the choice to deny entry.

It'd be good if  they cancelled this year's men's final and just said both finalists are pricks and don't deserve the oxygen of publicity, or the prize money

I worried in the first set that the occasion had somehow got to him but turned into a hell of a match. Flipping from that to the cricket to the Tour, I've nearly worn the remote out.

Djokavic smashing his racket reinforced my opinion, and then his post match interview smashed that in turn, now I don't know quite what to think.....the bastard.

Watched and enjoyed most of this game today - first since 1993 i believe, as i was feeling a little achy from yesterday's endeavors.

Yep, not a massive tennis follower but it was on in the background. Was already rooting for Alacatez then Djokovic pulled his timewasting/toilet break shenanigans, so was delighted with the result, but warmed to Djokovic again with his interview. Not often I'll sit through a tennis match but definitely worth it this time 👍
