Will the random text formatting ever be fixed?

For months now, posts have had random formatting applied to them. Small text, different sized text in the same post, right justified text. Also random tags appearing everywhere.

Is this a permanent feature?

No, but perhaps naively I've not completely given up all hopes and dreams of having a functional interface one day!

Turning off fancy editor makes zero difference.

Oh, I presumed it was that as I've never had formatting issues

It started occurring when there was that massive issue a month or so ago and has been like it ever since.

The fancy editor is the cause of spurious HTML markup, all the <DIV> and <SPAN> tags littering some folk's post. It happens when you paste rich text into it. Turning it off will absolutely stop that from happening (in your posts of course, not everyone else's).

The new 'features' like suddenly seeing right-justified text, I have no idea. It's never (knowingly) happened to me, however. That's probably a question for the Techs.

... the irony that it took me three attempts to successfully type those tags intentionally rather than accidentally isn't lost on me.

Nah, happens all the time to me with no pasting.  Well the /br nonsense does anyway.

It's not random, it's systematic. The problem is that nobody understands the system.

Stay away from the 'Visual' option of the text box and use the 'Text' option instead.
Most of the craziness seems to happen when you accidentally tap something using the Visual box.

Yep, quite often the text edit box fails to render properly and I don't have any options.

It started occurring when there was that massive issue a month or so ago and has been like it ever since.

It's been happening on and off for years. I can't ever recall the forum actually working properly consistently.

Point is, there is a choice of two editors on STW. The "fancy editor" is a thing called TinyMCE. It is known to be... let's say "idiosyncratic" with BBpress. This isn't specifically an STW issue, it's a compatibility issue. Though why STW doesn't just remove it completely I cannot fathom. Time, probably.

The box in the photo above is the mobile version of the, uh, non-fancy editor. It's what you will (should) see if you disable TinyMCE as per Simon's instructions earlier.

Hm, I wonder if the justify works when it's intentional...?

Huh. Neat.

@simondbarnes I have the fancy editor turned off.

EDIT actually it doesn’t stay off. It’s another bug…

As others have pointed out, it doesn’t make the slightest bit of difference, because it’s happening all the time despite my having the option turned off. I’ve been editing the crap out, but sometimes I can’t edit the post because it just locks up, so I have to open in another tab, then edit it and save. It’s a workaround, but it’s a pita, and I’d rather not do it, but years of editing text as part of my job in print and publishing has left me pretty OCD about text errors! 🤪
And I’ve just had to do three edits on this post… 🙄

Well the person who told me that hadn't actually turned it off. Are you sure that you have?
