Chaps,

I have bought a bag of logs from B&Q for a fire this weekend but all the kindling I have has been scavenged from the woods and is still green and damp. Will a hand axe suffice to chop one of the logs (12" logs, already halved or quartered? A splitting maul sounds way more hairy chested but feels like overkill.

Cheers!

Yes. Hand axe is fine.
Take care...

Awesome. Any ideas on where I can get one by Friday night?

Although I'm wary of "buying cheap, buying twice" so worry about the obvious answer of going straight back to B&Q etc

Go to a local green grocer and blag / get a few wooden crates?
The firewood from B&Q should be dead dry so won't need much kindling if any if you use a fire lighter.

Buy a bag of kindling as a cheaper option? Unless you need the axe anyway

Or go back to the woods and pick up some dry twigs

Buy a splitting maul head, and mount it in a block of wood (cut a square hole through, or just use two solid bits clamped on each side) with the blade uppermost. Place your soon-to-be-kindling wood on it and hit the top with a lump hammer.

Much more control than using an axe, and once you get to the skinny bits it feels much nicer than swinging an axe towards your fingers...

A DIY version of this:

I don't need an axe but I really want one.

As for picking up dry twigs in the woods, have you looked out of the window lately?

Try your local hardware shop or garden centre.

I pick my kindling from the woods and they were under 4ft of water the other day, get stuff thats caught up off the ground.

But you do need an axe cos every home should have one, in my view these are a good balance, small enough for kindling, big enough to cut down a tree if you really need to, nice quality without the premium cost of a gransfors. And theres a lot to be said for a wooden handle.

Edit: they are out of stock but you can get them in a few places, try ronnie sunshines

Husqvarna axes are really good and fiskars got one of each, small hatchet for kindling and 700mm splitting axe for logs, their actually made in the same factory .

I have a B&Q hatchet. I've got sharper butter knives. Had to do some serious filing to get any sort of edge on it.

Now have a GB small forest axe. More like the proverbial hot knife through butter....

I try not to chop logs for kindling, there's too much stuff lying around that can be used instead, save the logs for burning whole. If you live near the beach, a couple of big blue ikea bags can be filled in mutes with all the wee stuff that gets washed up and only takes a very minimal time if any at all to dry.

Small twigs from the woods kept in a basket at the fire dry out very quickly too.
