We need to redo the bathroom. It's still the original council issue bath and fittings from the 70's. Been in the house a few years now and we now have the money to redo it.

So will I regret ripping out the bath and only having a big shower? Bathroom is fairly small and I can't find a shower/bath that we both like so SWMBO suggested just a shower. Will we regret only having a shower?

I would - but I like baths.

And reading in a bath is very relaxing for me. And a lazy bath is a weekend requirement.

Much easier to bath little ones than shower them, but if you're past that stage....

Very, very occasionally I really wish I could soak in a bath - usually when I'm tired and achey.

I'm finding a way to get a bath back next time.

Yes. Baths are great. I don't know if this is relevant to your decision making, but we've rejected out of hand houses without baths.

Our bath probably gets used once every couple of months and theres 4 of us in the house!

I'd always have if I had space, but a nice big shower trumps a shower over a bath for me.

Another consideration is sellability (if that is important) - a house with no bath would put some people off.

I wouldn't - but I dont like baths. We have a very large shower in our bought house and I'm very happy at not having a bath. The OH on the other half would have a different opinion but he used to have a bath every day and then imagine the water bill!

How small is the bathroom? Ours it 2m x 2.4m and I put in a separate shower and managed to keep the bath. Shower is 600x800 so a reasonable size. So much better than a shower over the bath. I wouldn't miss the bath if it had to go, I haven't used it since the refit, but the wife likes it.

The last time someone used the bath rather than the shower in our house was me, post-crash, over 4 years ago. Prior to that I doubt it had been used in the previous 10 years. When we can afford it, we will be refitting the bathroom with a kickarse shower and no bath.

I wouldnt regret it. We have had a new bathroom fitted three years back. Mega big walkin shower, amazing. Nice big bath, which no one ever uses. I reckon its been used three times in as many years. My old man (87) ripped his bath out and had the same big shower fitted, much safer and the best thing he ever did he told me last week.

We had a new heating system fitted by a very clever plumber years ago, Megaflow, underfloor heating and importantly in the SE is a water softner, add mega shower to this and it the best shower I have ever experienced.

I lived in a place for a year with just a shower and I missed having a bath. I only have one once every few months though. Bit whiffy I know, but I'm on a meter

We moved into a house with no bath just an unreasonably large shower 2 years ago. Haven’t died of lack of bath but definitely miss it. When funds allow the bathroom will be getting rejigged to fit at least a short bath in, it’s not the biggest bathroom in the world so would miss the space, but in the winter after a long run/ride/paddle I’d love to have a good long soak.

Id fit a large-ish shower, something a bit bigger footprint than your standard 1m x1m tray? maybe 1m x 1.5m or thereabouts.
Nice big shower space, and extra space in the bathroom.

Win/win.

You won't regret it until you want or need a bath, and I say this as someone who never has a bath.

can’t find a shower/bath that we both like

I'm a bit lost here - can you find a bath you both like? If so, then just put the shower that you would have put in your big shower over it.

I can’t remember the last time I had a bath. If it wasn’t for young kids and lack of funds it would be gone.

Reselling might be harder as people with a young family tend to look for a bath but if you are staying put go for it.

We only use our bath for the dog in this house!

The hot tap on my bath doesn't work, it went so long without use it died from lack of interest

Opinion split about 50/50. I must admit I enjoy a bath after a wet cold winter ride. At the moment there is a electric shower over the bath but we both hate it as the water barely trickles out.

I have thought about the resale value but hopefully this will be the last house we own.

This.

It's a problem because many families only use a shower, but if I had small kids the lack of a bath would be a big issue.
I think if you've only got room for one or the other then my head says bath.

I have thought about the resale value but hopefully this will be the last house we own.

.... well it has to be sold sometime - but if you're dead then I suppose it's no longer your problem!!

Another mainly dogs in the bath household here. If we do our bathroom I would look for a wider bath so the "shower" was wider. THe cost of filling a wider bath with hot water wouldn't matter as it is rarely used.

Upgrade the shower? Our electric shower flow is fine. THey seem to range in power rating from 7.5-10.5Kw

One having a flow around 50% higher than the other.

Mines just powered from the combi boiler, so just the regular hot water ..it does have a 'rain fall' shower head though, which I really like.

Something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ENKI-Traditional-Shower-Thermostatic-Chrome/dp/B07XGN6P48/ref=sr_1_22?keywords=Rainfall+Shower+Head&qid=1666797589&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI2LjAzIiwicXNhIjoiNS43NiIsInFzcCI6IjUuNDMifQ%3D%3D&sr=8-22

It's actually really good as it doesnt feel like your're being jet-washed, lol!

I dont have a bath. I would like a bath and the mrs definitely misses it. It was worse before we put in a combi boiler as the shower pressure was crap. It's good now though

If you do it and regret it Where on the scale of regret will it be?

Top: wish I'd told suzie in 3b that I loved her

Bottom: I preferred the kettle in brushed stainless rather than chrome

Specc’d the biggest freestanding bath from Victoria Plumb in our house - I can lie flat on the bottom under the water. The dog doesn’t get a look-in 🤣

Just getting oor hoose rejigged (dorma getting put on). One of my requirements was i definitely wanted a bath in, having done without for the last 16 yrs, the old shower was only 75x75cms though so I'm looking forward to stretching out in a bath. Thought I would be good to soak the bones after a miserable cold bike ride. Still having a shower as well though

Thermostatic power shower if you have low water pressure.

We decided to go for a large shower area, no bath, and the money saved on the bath put into making the shower itself GOOD. No regrets at all. I'd regret it if we'd got a weak little shower, but an overhead rainfall style with a really decent flow is awesome.

Obvious answer, ditch the bath and get a sex pond in the garden.

Up until this year I'd have had no problem with removing the bath and only having shower facilities.

I've managed to mangle myself twice this year, operation on my right foot back in March meant no showers for a few weeks, the rest of me felt like I'd been run over so being able to relax in a warm bath with my foot resting on the side has been a god send. Another op on the same foot last week means I'm back to baths again for a few weeks. Prior to this year it'd been 4+ years since I last had a bath.

For kids and injured people baths are great.

We had an excellent Carron shower bath that was a fantastic compromise - but a shower curtain is always more annoying than a shower cubicle.

To take this on a bit. Any recommendations? Although we have a combi boiler so may test that to see how much flow we get. Also, as said above, at the moment we have a shower curtain which rather ruins the experience when you touch it and it keeps sticking to you so it's one of the reasons to upgrade the bathroom

Get a folding shower screen - miles better than a curtain. A damn site cheaper than a bathroom upgrade too!

Folding Shower Screen

Still struggling with the 'can't find a bath you both like' bit. Aren't they all variations of being white and errr bath shaped!? 🙂

Electric showers are always rubbish. My shower is run of the combi and 4 times the power of the most powerful electric shower.

I have a large bath and a shower over it. The shower curtain is mounted 20cm outside the bath and long enough to keep the bottom of it in inside the bath. I have more room behind the curtain than most shower cubicles and it never does the horrid sticking to you thing.

If you remove the bath the only real downside is that when you come to sell some buyers will be put off by it.

If it was just me and wife we could definitely live with really good shower only but:

With youngs kids a bath is pretty much essential. You *can* definitely manage without (lived in a house with no bath for 18months after first child was born) but it sucks. Kids love baths. It's also a handy place to throw them when they've had an explosive shartmageddon episode. Having a child that's suffered from many degistive issues for the past 4 years our bath is 90% a handy containment area.

When we were looking at houses to buy lack of bath wasn't a show stopper but I factored in the cost to install one.

We have a bath that fits two people. It's used to sort the washing pile. The two showers are used daily. I would not miss it.

I love a bath but haven't had one for months due to costs...showers are fine but don't really relax in them.
Given the costs of getting the hot water deep enough I don't think I'll be having a bath for a good while now and I've been thinking of my ultimate shower -

An old red phone box with a rain shower in roof and the corners of the shower will have almost full length finer jets of water so you get 4 sides soaked at once.

Option to do just rain shower, just sides or both.

Aware there will be little option to get a good soap lather up but I reckon the complete flooding would be a similar feeling to being in a bath - not quite (standing up for a start!) but plenty of water on the body.

No idea if that solution exists or cost of it but I reckon that would be my ideal shower (which would also probably cost the same as running a bath!).

Am I the only person who HATES baths?

For the handful of times that I "needed" a bath for injury recuperation, I've just gone to the local fitness centre and used their sauna and/or steam room (which I find are much more effective).

Fwiw: I have two bathrooms at home - one with a shower and one with a bath. The bath is just used as a dump for dirty towels and linen...
