Scottish mid term and heading to a cottage Tue till Fri. Me, wife and boys 8 and 11. Will sling bikes on roof if forecast decent as only half hour from Whinlatter ( never been before, is the blue descent for able kids on Islabikes ?). Looking for suggestions on activities, wet and dry 😆 and decent child friendly eateries. Thanks

Can't comment on things to do in Wigton, last time I was there there was nothing much for anyone to do!
Luckily there's plenty of places nearby to do stuff.

As for Whinlatter, I was just there today for the first time and kids on Islabikes won't have any problems on the blue route, there was quite a few on it today. When I left there was a kid on a balance bike heading towards the start with his family as well 😀

With a bit of assistance your kids may be able to manage the South red route. The blue has an extended route which is a wee bit harder, more fun.
Look at heading down to Whitehaven. Keswick for wet days at the pool, pencil museum. We often take our grand kids to Silloth caravanning.
The train ride to Carlisle or St Bees for a walk along the beach/headland back to Whitehaven is good.

My 6 year old gets round the blue, riding all the ups and downs on a beinn24. Bottom half of south red should be good for your 2 too. Stick the bikes on the train to maryport and take the sustrans route back along the coast, nice and flat and a tail wind if planned right! Clip and climb at maryport is actually really good, as is the new King Kong climbing wall in keswick-if you can belay you only pay for the kids to climb. The gin case is near Wigton, sort of farm visitor attraction thing which our 2 enjoyed.

If this weather continues, go up a mountain!

Some good ideas, thanks, will keep an eye on forecast and most likely take kids for a mix of south red and blue

Museum in Carlisle is worth a visit if it's wet and windy.

Cockermouth is a pleasant little town with loads of nice-looking places to eat - plus the famous Jennings brewery.

New climbing wall in Keswick.
Clip n climb and the marina/sea life spot in Maryport.
Miss the top section out if doing the South loop of Whinlkatter with an 8 yr old
Keswick BMX/Pump track is ace fun
The Puzzling Place in Keswick
The bridleways that go around the base of Cat Bells from Littletown around to Grange are lovely - return via the almost equally nice road on that side.
For eats The Filling Station cafe in Keswick is near the BMX track/pool.
Woodstone pizza place in Keswick

I grew up in Wigton, I can't say there was much to do.

The above suggestions are good though.

Carlisle castle could be worth a mooch too, a long time since I've been though.

See if you can get a tour round the plastic film factory. Learn about the differences between BOPP and cellophane. Fun for all the family.

Just having a think, knock and Nash was a pass time when I was younger, as was hikey-dykey.
