Short story tried to setup a wifi repeater at home. FTTP zen internet and fritz! boxes. Clearly made a mistake, not sure where, and I’ve ended up with one router taking the name of the other and neither WiFi password now works.
E.g. Router 1 (the original router and was working fine before I started all this) now appears on the WiFi list named as router 2.
router 2 was the new box I was trying to setup as the repeater.
With neither WiFi password letting me connect I’m not sure where to go now.
thoughts on how I can connect to the router and reset or unpick all this?
If I do physical LAN cable to router and see if anything obvious?
if neither WiFi password works, WTF password will! Or can I reset WiFi password if I do wired connection to the router?
I am clearly not popular at home right now. Help!
Or can I reset WiFi password if I do wired connection to the router?
Almost certainly. Usually the router will have a username/password physically printed on it somewhere that will let you log in once connected by a cable
Switch off the repeater at the moment to avoid causing any confusion
Use an ethernet cable and follow these instructions...

And if you must have a repeater (rather than mesh system which is better) then why not use the Fritz repeater that is made for the job?
I think the OP is using a Fritz Mesh ssytem....

Thanks will have a look at tomorrow. The Fritz repeater was £100-£200. I picked up a new router same as the installed one for £40. And the instructions to setup as an extender looked easy 😩
No luck connecting to router i’d clearly done a major FUBAR.
. Can’t fault Zen tech support though. Despite what felt like about a 20-step process he talked me through it all and now back to a single working router.
now to decide if knowing how to unpick I’m brave enough to try setup as repeater again.

I’ll at least give the kids 1 hour of working WiFi before I kill it again. 😀

Yeah they're pretty expensive..... You could buy a mesh system for that!

I think Fritz only do an add on repeater rather than a mesh system.... The OP is trying to use another router as a repeater as they're available cheaper than the official repeater.
Success. Was fairly easy (eventually). If anything the Fritz user guide was confusing in places as didn’t exactly tie into menus/options in the UI. Did the mesh setup more intuitively this time with the fallback of knowing I now knew how to reset routers if I had to.
@sharkbait They definitely do a mesh system, I'm using one right now, and I'm using two routers as the router is cheaper than the dedicated MESH box secondhand. I think it's because people who are with Zen resell them.

Ahh, fair enough.
I'm using a Fritz box at our other place and would like a little more coverage - I might look into this some more.
..... Or at least trying to use 😉
All sweet now, honest!

Aye, but… we have endless mesh issues (works fine for a bit, then the backhaul drops etc. etc.) so I’m not as convinced as some. We’re on Draytek gear so it should be pretty solid. Mesh with with wired backhaul probably the choice of champions where you can run Cat5e
There are many, many people who have zero issues with mesh systems - just because you have issues with a draytec system doesn't mean all mesh systems have issues.
I've been using the same Google WiFi (not even wired backhaul 😱) since they first came out and have had no problems whatsoever.
🤷🏻♂️
Same. Mike's not a cabled backhaul and works fine for us. Certainly better than running WiFi repeaters or multiple networks.

Converse also true - just because many people don’t have issues, doesn’t mean some people won’t have intractable problems, and sorting them isn’t always intuitive. All I’m saying is that “mesh” is often given as the solution to all wifi coverage issues and it’s not a universal panacea.
