I took the plunge on a new '21 MBP recently. One aspect that is annoying me somewhat is the relative peformance of the new machine over wifi.
Comapring back to back with the old machine i.e. same router in the house, same seat etc - the new machine is struggling maintain good connection and might get one or two 'bars' on the signal strength icon. The old machine works just fine!
I've also had real problems trying to get logged on to hotel and train networks.
Is there a way that the wifi card can be tested by the user i.e. some kind of diagnostic feature. Its a PITA to have to go to the Apple store!
It's possibly trying to use 802.11ax or something, and your router is being terrible at it?
FWIW I have M1 Macbooks and they've got better wifi than my old ~2018 MBP.
System Information -> Network -> Wifi has some useful diagnostics. It tells me that the connection to my home AP is over 802.11ac and what the signal/noise ratios are. Would be useful to compare that on both your old and new laptops.
Thanks - will give that a go later
If you hold down Option and click on the wifi symbol in the menu bar it will show various connection stats as well as showing "Open Wireless Diagnostics.." and various other reporting/logging options.
Menu bars have been discontinued on these new MBPs, not sure where the equivalent button would be!
Option-clicking the wifi symbol in the menu bar works if you add it to the menu bar. Alternatively, it's at /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/Wireless Diagnostics.app
