[Closed] Wifi 2.4GHz vs 5GHz - specifically getting an iPhone to use 5GHz

Been having some intermittent (but prohibitive) internet interruptions and *think* I have traced this to when devices are using the 2.4GHz wifi (my laptop seems to use both this and 5GHz as and when it feels like it). Disabling 2.4GHz on the router (at the suggestion of PlusNet) seems to "fix" the issue on the laptop and all works well however my iPhone SE just simply refuses to connect to the wifi like that (and it too suffers the interruptions ordinarily).

I've done some googling and tried a few things but according to everything I've found, the iPhone *should* be able to cope with 5GHz wifi. Has anyone got any words of wisdom or experience of this or suggestions for what I can try? I've restarted phone, cleared network settings and re-done the wifi connection (password etc) to no avail. I get the impression that the 2.4GHz is a more congested option but not sure what I can do about that other than avoid it!

Thanks for any help...

Make them seperate networks instead of a dual network. It’s a common issue with Apple devices.

OK thanks - will that then let the iPhone connect via the 5GHz option then?

Edit: seems to!! Just to check, in order to achieve this I unchecked the option "Sync with 2.4 GHz:" in the router settings and gave the 5GHz option a slightly different SSID and joined that. I then "forgot" the 2.4GHz network on my phone and it seems to work.

Is that what you mean? Great stuff so far though, I will see if that properly fixes it, cheers!

I've been running 5GHz for years after I had trouble with internet dropping out due to interference with neighbours wifi. Had absolutely no problems whatsoever. No issue with any device connecting to it. I have an Apple AirPort Extreme router and an Airport Express WiFi extender and the option to go 5GHz was in the guided setup, so easy to set up.

Yes sounds right Munkster it’ll deep-nods on the router in what terms it uses but that sounds right. As you can see that allows you then to connect easily to to 5Ghz.
