.. on steam coming out of the kettle. It's pretty bad - she said it blistered up then went down immediately.

It simply looks a bit red with what looks like a loose thin top layer of skin on it. No serious falling off of skin or anything, but she says it hurts like hell.

Any tips? WTFU? Cover it up? Leave it open?

Cold water. Lots of it. Soon as possible. Keep it under a running tap for as long as possible.

I would cover with cling film and then cool as much as possible with ice etc.

Once it's cooled remove the cling film.

I AM NOT A DOCTOR.

As above, and don't put anything cloth based on it as it may stick, when I worked in kitchens clingfilm was generally the thing to use if it needs wrapping. Do this if the skin breaks.

Edit, too slow.

Running water for 10 mins to cool.
If it hurts like hell then thats a good thing as it's not deep.
You can get burn gel with pain killer in.
If worried about it then get to out of hours doctor.

Water starves the burn of oxygen.

Already did the cold water, for 20 mins, immediately afterwards. This was about 2 hours ago now.

Cover it with a clean dressing and leave it to dry out. Eventually the new skin will re-grow underneath.

Too late now, but try and find some lavender gel for the future. Very effective for immediate first aid on burns. We bought a tube from Chemist about 10 yrs back and it lives by the cooker.

Thousand Island. 🙂

Ask at the local pharmacy - they should be able to point you at the best non-adherent one for burns/scalds.

Take lots of pictures.post them up on Facebook instagram ,snap chat etc, etc, ask for advice on a bike forum, ask for advice on lots of other forums, post up more pictures, and have a couple of cups of tea, relax.

and then go to drop in centre and wait.while posting detailed info on all the other resident ill people around you.

How big is the blistering? We were advised on our first aid training last week that more than half a plan print if blister needs a trip to a&e. We were also told not to pop blisters, but non of us were/are doctors.

Blister was about 2" long or so on the edge of a thumb.

I'm a bit gabberflasted that nobody suggested ice?

Whenever I've been able to apply ice to a burn/scald/blister*, it has healed far better than others with the cold water option.

*I've had a few drunken fire/hand/cooking incidents, none of which I regret 🙂

I'm ahead of you.

I gave her an ice cube straight away but then the NHS said absolutely do not put ice on.

Minor Injuries or Walk in Centre. 😡

Or listen to DrP.

1 burn is enough.

Ouch. I once burned my hand with steam off a bowl of microwaved potatoes - I was told that steam burns you twice. It was a second degree burn. Unbelievably painful.

Bah, surely this justifies a 999 call?

I suppose it's better than scolding you.

Ok....

You can put it under cold water if you like. It makes it feel better while you think of something else to do with it. The evidence is it makes f all difference to the healing of the wound.

Don't put ice on it... it damages it. Don't put any other lotions and potions on it. They're just difficult/painful to remove if a health care professional actually wanted to look at it.

Cling film is the first aid dressing of choice; low adherence, sterile, stops any friction to the wound (that's what hurts) and allows us to look at it without taking the dressing off.

If it's blistered and it's an interesting bit of your body (hands, feet, face, genitals) then we want to have a look at it and probably put a nice burn dressing on it and review it occasionally.

Cling film is sterile? Just wondering, that would keep it moist - is that advisable? For how long?

Don't think it's worth going to the docs for currently.

If someone scalded their genitals on the steam from a kettle then I don't want to see it, but I DO want to hear the story! 😆

Clingfilm... Yes it is (surprisingly), or at least as sterile as it needs to be to cover burnt damaged skin already teeming with bacteria

Moist - very good for healing burns, all burns dressings will aim to keep wounds moist to some defree

Should we pick up some hydrocolloid dressings?

Edit - hmm, skin is not at all broken, I think we'll be fine. Ta

In a serendipitous thread crossover i'd like to mention that some homeopaths recommend HOT water for a burn, or holding it over a candle 😯

Ouch, steam burns hurt! Heres one of mine from September, leg was worse. I couldn't get to water so it was a mile walk then drive so prob a good 1.5hrs till I go to hospital. Very painful, but you can barely see the arm one but the thigh is scarred still.

Do not use ice or iced water on burns. The extreme cold causes constriction of the blood vessels and can worsen injury by reducing blood supply
Running cold water 10-15 mins you want to stop burning process
Remove any jewellery
No ointments, creams etc as will retain the heat
Lay a couple of layers of cling film on burn, discard first couple of sheets ,do not wrap around limb as will reduce blood supply to peripheries ,secure cling film with bandage,if you don't have cling film use wet dressings
Don't burst blisters
Paracetamol or briefness for pain
If in doubt go to minor injuries not a/e
