I only asked her to trim the wispy bits at the bottom as I had a bit of a mullet

Now she wants to go back in to “sort it out”

I’m not brimming with confidence, reckon I should DIY it with the clippers?

She can't make it much worse 🙈

I'll be letting the wife have a go soon. Hope my trimmer is up to the job!

Diverts attention from the wallpaper so that’s a plus!

At least you have someone to give it a go, my hair is at that annoyingly all over the place situation. Along with my beard I am starting to look like an extra from Shameless.
Its fine when I'm at work as we have to wear a hat & hairnet, but when I'm coming home from work it looks a sight.

Might just have to be a No 3 all over as thats the longest guard I have for my clippers!

I can’t stand in the bathroom all day though so that only works for a bit

She will be able to fix it, but please get photos taken through the process just in case you need more advice

Wife did mine yesterday. Just clippers, no scissors as I like having eyes. We agreed beforehand if it went tits up, we could just do a No.2 all over.

No.8 over the top, then Nos 6,4,3,2 and 1 from the crown graduated down to the neck. Apparently worked a treat, not that I can see the back.

Man with hair brags about having bad hair day.

No1 or bare blade all over for the win

I'm not bald, honest - at least not from the right angle - but I just don't understand why anyone has anything other than a full-on number one all over. Oddly, when I sort of helped the missus cut her hair last week, she disagreed.

I'd cut your losses, deploy the strimmer and see how it goes. Worst case, you have one of those skulls that makes you look like a Chelsea Headhunter or, at the other extreme, a Mekon. It grows back really quickly anyway, so you can't far wrong and it removes all the nuanced stuff about blending things in because there is nothing there to blend 🙂

I think the issue is that the clippers we have seem to have a no.1 or a no.87 guard and that’s it.
She’s turned her attention to the dog at the moment so I’m safe for now

Mine's getting very unruly too. Sadly I have no-one to destroy it for me and I have no hair clippers! I've got 2 months worth of growth from a no 3.5 baseline as I get my haircut on my first free day after payday so I had 1 month of growth as the lockdown was announced. Debated biccing it all off but my head has a few odd pumps and bumps so it never looks anything other than like Sloth out of the Goonies.

Going with letting it grow wild for the time being and have stopped shaving too, might as well go all-in!

I let my wife have a go at mine yesterday and she’s done a remarkably good job. Quick YouTube tutorial first and then got on with it. I’m pleasantly surprised I’ve not had to resort to the all over clip.

Been cutting my own hair for almost 20 years without a problem. Yesterday I left the guard off the blade by mistake and now I have a somewhat pronounced widows peak but only on one side.

Same here but I did it myself as I didn't trust the other half or either daughter with the clippers. Youngest daughter wanted to give me "a sick fade" Err, no thanks 😀

That's what did too. No-one to help so the back was interesting. There's load of youtube how-to videos and it seemed to work OK. On arriving to pick my kids up their Mums comment was "where did you get your hair cut" - said it looked good so I take that as a success.*

* Her next question was "can you cut Georges" (7 year old son) - so some flattery might have been employed.

I did his using scissors on the top and clippers on the back/sides and to be honest it's pretty good - he's happy so is his mum from photos.

It'll grow out, in the meantime you should definitely do hers.

My OH managed a similar level of hatchetry on me a few years ago, despite only using a #4 even the barbers couldn't rescue it!

Lesson (not, she'll be adamant she's correct and just needs to practice her novel technique) learnt, you start with say a 4 at the back and taper it upwards, not try and do a thin strip of 2, 4, 6, 8, just stick the 4 on and let it come away gradually as you get to the crown. And anything longer than a 4 looks crap and should be done with scissors.

I agree, but not making a mess of it is a high priority (hence for myself I used clippers - and it looks OK, but for my son I used scissors and yes it looks better (also about twice as long as my no 8 longest setting)

did mine yesterday, i did the sides with a no3, then scissor cut the top using the 'grab hair through fingers and cut off whats sticking out' method. wife then finished the back with the no3.

looks as good as my normal pro job, to me at least.

I got lucky in that I had my annual cut a couple of weeks before all this kicked off. I'm struggling to see why most people would care though - it's not like you're going anywhere where people are going to see it.

As for letting my partner cut it,

Pretty much every girlfriend I've ever had has offered to cut my hair at some point and they've all had the same three-word answer, "no chance."

You know that story about cutting a table leg to level it up? I’d steer clear if I were you!

I tried to do my own having seen some guy on BBC showing how it's done.

Unsurprisingly the reality was a total disaster. Ended up just shaving it all off..

Veteran home barber here. No1 all over is what you need, no better feeling than sandpaper head. But the wife won't let me do that to the boy so he gets a no4 all over, then a no2 tapered in at the back and sides. It's a bit squaddie but very easy.

Got up this morning, went into the bathroom to give the beard a bit of a trim, tidy up a few straggly bits, and thought, sod it. Fortunately my hair, what there was of it, was fairly short anyway, so my beard clippers didn’t struggle with what was being asked of them. Feels rather liberating. 😎
