Wi-fi nodes/ connectivity question

Hi, any suggestions to improve wi-fi connectivity? Specifically, I use an ASUS mesh type wi-fi system at home, with the main router wired to a fibre broadband ONT in the house, and a separate node in a home office located separate to the house. The signal between the 2 routers (displayed on the ASUS mesh app) is usually OK-to-good. However, I suspect the work laptop (HP Elitebook) always defaults to connecting to the main node in the house, resulting in a weak signal and poor work connectivity. I can't see a way of forcing the laptop to connect to a specific node in the Windows (11) settings.

(Moving the laptop or routers is not really an option).

Suggestions welcome. Cheers!

Just turn off the automatic connection to the unwanted wifi.

Search for wifi settings, click on the unwanted connection, uncheck the automatic connection box.

This type of behaviour, where a device appears to stick to a weaker node / wireless access point, is something that was quite common before mesh systems.  But it shouldn't be nearly as common with a mesh system which is performing well.

What happens if, when the laptop is near the home office node, you turn off wifi on the laptop, then turn it back on?

If you're certain that it's still connected to the main node in the house, you can force it to use the home office node within the Asus app's settings.  Go to Devices > select the laptop > Bind to AP > Select the home office node.

As mda says, the setting will be in the app for the mesh nodes, not on the laptop.

I use TP Link Deco pods and for each connected device you can disable mesh connectivity so that it stays connected to the pod that it is currently connected to.

Thanks. Yes, I found the setting in the Asus mesh app to bind the device (laptop) to the correct access point (the office one). That seems to have worked!

Do you have the latest software on all the nodes?

I had an issue with certain wireless devices hanging on to the last node for far too long when i had mismatched software versions. (I'd set one to update automatically and one needed a manual push to update)
