Vodafone WiFi router with a second TP Link wireless access point connected via Ethernet cable.

Connected to the Vodafone router it works fine, connected to the AP it works but incredibly slowly.

Everything else connected to the AP seems to work fine. What’s going on, any ideas please?

Cheers

What phone is it? Are you connecting to 2 or 5ghz? can your phone do 5ghz if youre trying to connect to it?

iPhone 6S

2.4 as the WAP is only 2.4

iPhone SE and 2 iPads work fine.

It connects but internet is either incredibly slow or just doesn’t load at all.

Same with other apps too, not just browser.

It worked fine before switching to Vodafone and changing to their router.

Also Chromecast happily streams through it.

Could be that your phone is still accessing the router and not the extender.

Nope, it is connecting to the correct network. I've got 2 differently names SSIDs. If I connect to the Vodafone router then it works as expected.

If I connect to the TP-Link access point the download speed is as low as 1mps on the phone, vs 15mps on the iPad 2 inches away from it.

EDIT: As it happens the new Vodafone router has more or less removed the need to the second AP as it works much better at the other end of the house than the old router, but I'd rather keep it just in case.

Look at settings, mobile data, scroll aaaalllll the way down and toggle WiFi assist off then test again.

Somewhere in the process it might have decided the AP WiFi is crap and be trying to use mobile data.

How are you testing the speed?

@IA good idea but it’s not switched on for either phone (and iPad is WiFi only). Also my mobile data is pretty quick.

I’m just using the Google sped test, but I don’t need to test it to find out it’s slow, it’s that bad that it’s unusable.

A lot has changed in the world since I started this thread, but alas is still doesn’t work.

Further investigation today seems that it’s an issue with 2.4GHz connections.

If I split the main router to separate 2.4 & 5 the phone doesn’t work when connected to 2.4, works perfectly connected to 5.

I even set another router up today and same issue. And the wife’s SE is doing the same.

Is there a fundamental setting I’m missing somewhere or a bug in IOS?

The vodafone router is a bag of rubbish.
Mines constantly doing that, i cant get reliable connection upstairs or in the garage. One device flies along, another grinds to a halt. I dont think its an AP issue itself. Have you got the app installed?

Check your sync speed on the app, then try changing the wifi channel, apparently the default channels get used for lots of things and especially 5ghz suffers as bluetooth etc uses the same channels or so im told. I changed mine as per their support and it improved but its rubbish again now, possibly down to lockdown and an increase in traffic.

I think its down to some device Data sharing trickery on the router. Yesterday i caved and installed a powerline ap into the garage, and connected the atv for the turbo, firestick and my phone to it. Got on fulgaz, all was fine till it fell over. I then speedtested my phone, 20mbps, the apple tv in the same location was running less than 1mbps, and the firestick carried on streaming oceans 12 in full hd. I can see no logic behind it other than the router prioritising certain devices.

Try boosting the device thats suffering in the app and see if that helps. Im going back to wires for everything data hungry.
