Mot until the end of next month ? It could be fine, I wouldn't say it was silly cheap for a 12 year old fairly undesirable car - bear in mind it'll cost you £125 for six months tax in a few weeks and £48 for an MOT. If it was me, I'd agree a price based on it passing an MOT (maybe the seller would split the cost with you if it failed ?). If they won't let you MOT it walk away.

It's got what some people think is high miliage (it's not for 12 years old car)

Its not a real Volvo, nor a Ford or even a Chinese one, it's a Mitsubishi (lack of) Carisma under the skin.

The current owner needs to shift it, but looking on ebay, most of the recent sales for 99 S40's have been £410 or less, so it's pretty expensive going by that esp as you need tax and ticket soon.

the cylinder head might be on its way out of the three my dad had 2 went around 90k and the other was written off by a hit and run driver the old Volvo 940 estates are better anyway 😉

It's 99 with that mileage and mot and tax due. The price reflects that and a quick sale but doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with it. Volvo's are real mechanics cars and can go forever if looked after. There is a way of checking out the previous advisories from an mot, can't remember if you need more than just the rag plate though

Needs a cam belt at that age and milage. 150 to 250 pounds for that. Probably a few other minor things to sort out. Our Company cars are 1.6 carisma's with 150k on some of them. Seats are hard and the suspension is nothing special but they do just go on and on.

Looking for something cheap and reliable

Was looking for a Honda civic or accord but they all seem to be around the £1000 mark which is a bit too much for me at the moment

no point doing a cambelt in a £400 car, just run it till it snaps.

Its not very cheap though. I've got a mondeo diesel estate that's a year newer than that, and with 1 months ticket (as it has now) I recon it's worth about £200. 12 months ticket on any car that runs I think is about £400 or so now
