Okay - I am a supermarket wine buyer but there's hardly any Zinfandels available. Need I widen my horizons?

BTW - my fave is Ravenswood.

Ravenswood Lodi Zinfandel certainly gives a good kick in the teeth.

Good quaffing wine.

Zinfandel is also known as something else in another country, it might be something like Pinotage, but I can't remember now. A bit like Syrah and Shiraz being the same grape in different countries. Anyway, Ravenswood Zinfandel is excellent. You pay for what you get, the older low yield root stock grapes will be in a more expensive Ravenswood than young higher yield root stock.

It's fairly easy to get in the UK, you just need to explore outside the Supermarkets. Threshers/Wine Rack did stock the Ravenswood Lodi Zinfandel, but they went tits up last year.

Zinfandel is now grown outside USA, the last really good one I had was a Nepenthe Sirens Zinfandel from OZ, but quite expensive maybe £20+.

However, white Zinfandel is very Pish.

Cape Mentelle in WA make the best Zin in Oz, mainly cos no one else bothers.

stop shopping in a supermarket, try www.nakedwines.com honest not a plug but they are good or find your nearest Wine shop (ie one that only sells wine) talk to them about what you like see what they can suggest or get also be prepared for your budget to go up:)

I'm annoyed that it's hard to get a wine of age in the supermarket all the Oz shiraz's are 09 and thats plain wrong off to see my wine man next week

Zinfandel is really hard to do well cheaply. There are a lot of really good pinot noirs about for around a tenner that might fit the 'not syrah but quite interesting' slot. Try Oddbins, particularly Matahiwi pinot,
