Random Friday afternoon musings . . .

i have just poured myself a glass of water from the inline water filter/cooler/pointless thing on the counter in our office kitchen - i am always suspicious of it but for some reason still opt for that rather than running the tap for ages to get it cold.

However I've just noticed - there is no meniscus on the water. . . . . apparently the thing purifies water with uv light . . . . why should that change the meniscus?

I guess the surface tension has been messed up.
Maybe something like electrowetting.

Could your glass have had some soap left in it?

The Japanese make a flower arrangement
In a vessel with a perfectly level rim.
The vessel is filled with water
To a level above the rim
The water is held from overflowing
By a curved meniscus
That bends light like a lens.
In the center of the water
Floats a single perfect flower
That sends tiny ripples across the water surface
And crinkles the meniscus
When the vessel is vibrated.

Very poetic.

Adjustable wench was his name
Getting a drink was his game
His mind did a flip
As his drink had no lip
and he wanted to know who to blame

I bet it does have a meniscus. Drop a bit of fluff, thread or hair onto it.

How are you assessing the meniscus or lack thereof?

yes molgrips it does have very small one - but compared to tap water it looks absent (i poured out one glass (both clean glasses out of the dishwasher) from the cooler and one from the tap to compare)

when you look at it though it just looks flat

I was once told to check the meniscus against reed stalks on a river, a reversed meniscus was a sign that the river level was rising.

If you have a very clean glass and very pure water, there's a greater attraction between the water molecules than to the surface of the glass, so there's no capillary action to draw the water up the glass and create meniscus.

both clean glasses out of the dishwasher

That could be it.

Dishwashers use "rinse aid", which is a bit like cheap car 'wax' in that it repels water causing it to bead and run off. If the water is repelled from the glass you'll get a convex meniscus rather than concave like you typically get with mercury.
