So I'm sitting here, having just eaten a nehari from 'This 'n That in Manchester: Muslims from ****stan who have shown me nothing but kindness and friendship over the last 20 odd years I've been popping in for a meal and a chat. See the staff out and about around Manchester and Bolton, lovely people, always stop and talk, they remember which team I support, where I live and work, take time out of their busy lives to be interested in my family and how I'm getting on.

Going back a couple of generations, my ancestors are English, Irish, Spanish, French and Flemish.
My dad fought in Scandinavia, India and Burma during WW2, and came home with a love and respect for other cultures. He had learned Urdu and took every opportunity to amaze his Asian mates with his terrible Sheffield tinged accent.

I've always realised that we are a country fundamentally based on immigration, immigrants and the assimilation that naturally follows, but it has taken this article 'A portrait of a random British killing' by Euan Ferguson in today's Observer to make me realise just how proud I am to be British.

Not at all surprised how the local community has reacted, with grief, sadness and anger to the loss of a hugely respected local Sikh man who just tried to live a good life in a difficult place, a force for good, a positive influence on all he met. Upsetting but inspirational.
