Excellent rant 9/10

Could be 10/10 if threats made to Halfords.

sounds like iv’e a pan pipe band in back seat

In fairness to halfords, that is quite funny

Good rant though, 8/10. Needed more random caps.

We get customers turning up all the time to pick up kayaks with wingbars on the wrong way round - many have been fitted by Halfords.

Worse are the ones where the shop or customer has used the wrong fitting kit and they are just about to fall off....

Thule are designed to self-fit - I don't understand why anyone would need to get a shop to fit them.

8.5/10 rant, an art form that needs to return on STW.

@finbar

Strong marking, I think that needs to go to adjudication. At a cursory glance spelling and punctuation is mostly in tact, no swearing, zero threats of violence. I feel 7/10 would be more appropriate, good, but room for improvement.

It all went wrong as soon as you said you went to Halfords 😂

We are fortunate to have a few independent Thule dealers in the area who are not only cheaper , but actually know what they are doing. It’s not even a difficult job to put them on. It’s convenient to get them to fit them the first time so they can make the correct adjustments, but it’s good to know how them come off and go back on so you can remove them yourself.
You would expect Halfords to give at least a basic level of training to their fitters wouldn’t you

Why would you trust what are essentially Saturday job kids on minimum wage to do anything even mildly technical involving a bicycle or car that you could do yourself in 5 minutes?

I once took a car to a Halfords MOT station because it was open on a Sunday. They failed it on rear suspension and said they could repair for around £400-£500. Took it to another MOT station and it passed. Never again.

You went to Halfords and expected good service?

Do you want to buy some magic beans?

My son works for Halfords! (Part time) Bikes though, not roof bars. Well, mostly BSOs.
So totally unrelated to anything really. (Except me, I'm his father) (that's enough)

Roof bars are easily fittable and removable. Its something you'll presumably be needing to do yourself frequently so why have them "professionally" fitted first time?

Ones I've had (Thule and Audi) have come with the tools required for fitting, and easy to follow instructions.

It sounds like you won't be taking them on and off again regularly. Remember to spray wd40 or lithium grease in the key slots occasionally or you might find they get a bit stucky

Was going to say, it's not rocket science fitting a roof rack and bike carrier. Got a four bike carrier. The only issue is the weight if doing it alone. I've mastered the technique of fitting and removing solo, with the assistance of two thick microfibre car drying towels (slide rack legs over roof).

"punctuation is mostly in tact"

Are we reading the same OP?  I'd agree on 7 out of 10.  The lack of full stops really adds to the feeling of rage building.

This is a bit like complaining about kwikfit.....

And besides, surely any self respecting bloke can fit a roof rack...... Halfords staff withstanding.

WTF pays for someone to fit roof bars for them? I assume they are some really special ones that need the roof of the car drilling or something???

Was my first thought, I mean what are you going to do when they need to come back off, pay them another £20?

I think that actually the OP answered their own question. Missing but implied parts of the sentence inserted in brackets below.

Why (on earth would you choose to use) Halfords (.) Why (?)

It's mostly there, could do with a smattering of commas/full stops, but no one in a spittle flecked rage has time for any form of punctuation/spelling, and for all we know this could be his best work. There's even a couple of apostrophes in there, one's rogue but maybe he's a greengrocer?

I feel some responses warrant a higher score than the OP for their venting at the OP for using Halfords/not fitting the bars himself.

Nope. Used to work there and staff received zero training.

It so happened that most of us who worked there (in the bikehut bit) were bike-mad so there was actually a lot of knowledge - but that was because the manager tried to hire people who already knew what they were doing. With a less conscientious manager, I can quite believe a branch could be staffed entirely by folk with no clue.

Halford do MOT’s and people willingly have them done by then? The end times are truly upon us.

Halfords only get my business if I am desperate for a product, there appears to be no alternative and I can just buy and leave.

I have met one very good bike mechanic who worked in Halfords, poor girl, and she had an expression and manner that shouted "I am a proper mechanic, please don't judge me for being here".

I think a lot of folk use Halfords for car stuff because they think it is one in the eye for main dealerships who rip them off.

Out of the frying pan...

they bought (and rebranded) the national garages chain, who already did those services. An MOT is just a check by a certified checker, it shouldn't really matter who you use.
