It is a Be-12 for goodness sake.
A Be-12:

It is hardly going to start WW3
It's August so it's slow news time but it's also documenting a trend in Russian activity at the moment that is actually news

Going to play a bit devils advocate here: Are they not anti-submarine aircraft so could be tying to gather signatures of submarines around harbours. Also if equipped to attack they could destroy a submarine in our own waters potentially causing nuclear contamination and then starting WW3?
What is this, Points of View?
Russia bored and we get to justify our Euro fighters 🙂

Tom Clancy fanboy?
To advertise that the RAF are flying out of Romania? The Black Sea is one of the places you might expect to see Russian jets... if it was the Solent the it would be news.
just seems to be s bit of a push for the UK government to say look we might think you are all a bunch of ****s and want nothing to do with you at a man on the street level but we are still committed to NATO even if Trump isn’t...
Not saying it’s necessarily what’s going on here but I found this book fascinating https://www.amazon.com/Any-Means-Necessary-Americas-Secret/dp/0374117470 . A history of ferreting in the Cold War.
The more 2018 goes on the more I think we're on the precipice of another fairly large conventional war. I'm currently reading Hirohito's War - the election of Trump, Mattis who conjures up images of WW2 generals such Patton and MacArthur, the push by the far right in Europe, Brexit, Russias hybrid warfare, Chinas military expansion followed by Americas economic sanctions - it has so many eerie similarities to the years leading up to it kicking off in the Pacific in '36.
I'm starting to think that major powers are starting to see the use of nuclear weapons as so insane, that they can actually fight conventional wars with each other, without starting a global nuclear holocaust.
My best mate was a nav on the Tornado. He was up at least once a week escorting some Russian aircraft or other around our borders. The crews, ours and Mother Russia's, used it as an opportunity for cool selfies. Basically, Russia has an air force, we have an air force, both of which require their air crew to fly once in a while, believe it or not. Why is it news indeed.
Tom Clancy fanboy?
Da
..crap, I mean yes. Quite like a bit of Jack Ryan
The OH gets quit dismayed that I pick novels based on them having a cool cover with a helicopter gunship or nuclear sub on the cover 😀
I just assume this happens all the time
If the government are disclosing it now, must be for a reason.
Ironically the Russians actively subvert our democracy, the gov don't say anything
Does it make the news because it's ****ing clickbait, much like this thread?

Yes the benevolent Russian state with it's open democracy and just laws with no history or aggression and interference.
Next you will be telling us that Litvinenko and the Skripals just had flu.
