So, we have a new laptop.
The old laptop has some documents i'd like to move over to the new laptop, however the old ones were created in Word 2010 & the new laptop has Word 2016.
When i attempt to open up the old documents on the new laptop it only displays odd square shapes.

Actually, the old ones are "WPS" files ????
I suspect they're Ms works format and you need this conversion prog:

Or use LibreOffice instead. It can open .wps files as standard.

It's because Microsoft don't have a clue when it comes to backwards compatibility (see also MS Project).
I had some weird text box issues on MS Excel recently. It was because the font that the spreadsheet was created in wasn't on the computer I was opening the file with.
