Simple question, but it's been bugging me for a while - baking potatoes used to be massive, now they're basically the size of normal potatoes. Why is that?
It's like wagon wheels. Pototoes were never actually as large as you remember them
Your belly means the plate is further away. Hth.
If you've found that forks are now longer than you remember them - so that they can reach the plate- then this could be a valid explanation
They're growing them for less time for faster turnover
I find it depends where they are grown

Thank you for the hilarious answers.... 🙂

Is this an educated guess (cos I'd thought the same) or definite knowledge?

And you can eat their skins.
Smaller potatoes are what the market desirees.
Well done sir
And you can eat their skins.
You could always eat the skin, it was always the best bit.
Shrinkflation.
Or, possibly, you are getting bigger so they just seem smaller?
You could always eat the skin, it was always the best bit.
I should have added "easily", I just didn't want to sound uncouth by admitting that I chewed the thick tough skin of a baked potato 🤭

Pure speculation on my part.
If we are at war with potatoes we have always been at war with potatoes.
On a serious note I do think food portions have reduced in general over my adult life a. I am no longer a mega eating 20 year old and plenty of pub meals used to fill me up (good rural pubs) now the mains seem to be like starters with the excuse of what the market want.
Alien potato death rays. The potatoes are being weakened and will eventually become too small to see.
In my 20s I was a bottomless pit. I’m now 50 and still one, you can still get big portions but it’ll cost a little more in some places.
Drought?

It's a global conspiracy to force us all to eat rice. First the potato is shrunk to be rice size then it's the old switch-a-roo.
The macain baked potatoes are the size of marbles and some taste like them.
Potatoes are 85% water, was it warm last year?
They’re growing them for less time for faster turnover
Mmmmmmmm.... Pomme de terre turnover.
You still get the odd monster in a sack or the boxes of loose non "baking potatoes" but I dare say they probably just sort them all to a much tighter size range than before as that'll be the spec for them and help ensure you get 4 similarly sized ones per kg.
It's not like "baking potatoes" is anything but a branding exercise.
You’d imagine we’d be self sufficient for spuds (I grew up on the edge of the Fylde so my dna is 60% potato) …. But could it be a b-word thing? What’s the weather like for growing spuds in our neighbouring trading partner Morocco?
Fairly sure there was talk of dry weather affecting the potato crop.
I just assumed it was MrsMC being contrary for claiming the miniscule baked potatoes she was serving up were an adequate size.
An adult male should not be able to eat two baked potatoes with filling at a sitting
An adult male should not be able to eat only two baked potatoes with filling at a sitting
FTFY.
They're giving all the big ones to benefit-scrounging freeloading illegals
and, of course, the liberal elite
I buy these nower days, as I don't care about size, and dont't get through huge amounts of them.
Also tatties are tatties. 47.6p per kg.

We're gonna need a bigger oven!
Spuds are same size as always; your eyes have got bigger.
