Is there some new technology that no one knows about in them ?

Genuinely surprised at the cost of them !

Likewise, but the wife insisted and now we have one. Seems a bit drier around here now I guess.

They're basically the expensive part of a fridge / freezer, without the large empty box attached...

Yup.

they're pretty essential in old houses that are cold and damp. Otherwise you get mouldy wall, mouldy furniture, mouldy clothes....

Ebac Dehumidifiers FTW BTW. Even more pricey but the one we had was great. It would blow warm air out the front to dry your clothes rack at the same time as it ran the dehumidify cycle.
