I have real trouble staying awake in meetings I am not actively involved with. This has also manifested itself this week during a training course where I am the only participant; I’m fighting to stay awake during the video sessions despite downing enough energy drink to sponsor an F1 team! What’s going on with me?

Maybe a deficiency of some kind? Thyroid? Poor diet? I'd go to a GP and get tested.

despite downing enough energy drink

Sugar / caffeine / carb overload like if you eat two lunches worth of food?

Boring meetings?

There's nothing like inactivity to put your body into sleep mode.

Also meetings where people have no active role...someone somewhere probably needs to sort their agenda and attendee list out.

Energy drinks don't give you energy. They borrow it from the future.

It's been said but go get a blood test just in case.

I'm very lucky that I happened to get random a blood test a couple of years back...

I'm sure you will be fine but still.👍

If it's a thing that has just started happening ..then..
>Maybe a deficiency of some kind? Thyroid? Poor diet? I’d go to a GP and get tested<👍👍

If this has always been the way..then..
>Maybe work is just boring the tits off you?<

Cut out the energy drinks, and reduce sugary food...and go get some tests done.

The things you eat/drink to give you energy may be a bit counterproductive if you overdo it.

Is it just during zoom calls, or are you crashing at other times too? Probably worth a convo with your GP if it persists despite laying off the Monster for a bit.

Buy a standing desk.....gravity will keep waking you up.

Sugar highs and lows won't be helping

Along with the other comments (all valid) - iron deficiency/ anaemia ?

Will show up on a blood test from the quacks.

It's almost as though I have some 1st hand experience 🤔😖

Because you picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines.

I used to fall asleep in meetings. In the end it turned out that getting hammered each night I was away made me sleepy. I was as amazed as the next man, but after a second option it turned out to be true. Also, the ol' black dog makes me feel very tired, and disinterested in shitty arse PowerPoints from boring presenters.

It’s been going on since I was 18. Falling asleep during lectures in the army is not conducive to your wellbeing.

The energy drinks were a new addition specifically for this course, I don’t normally drink them and they are the zero sugar ones.

If it’s just been a week then I’d tell you to wait and see if it gets better rather than doing blood tests that are very likely to be normal.

If this is at home it might be worth spending a few quid on a new carbon monoxide meter.

Had a friend who went like this a few years ago. His wife wasn’t as badly affected but she was still going out every day to her office while he stayed put at home. He ended up in hospital and I think it could have gotten a lot worse if they hadn’t caught it then.

I used to be like this and sometimes had to go and hide in the back of the bus during the day and have a snooze it was terrible. Turned at all around by cutting out ALL sugar and ALL carbs. I literally only eat meat and eggs and small amounts of green veg and when I say it has been life changing I promise I'm not exaggerating. I have lost 3.5st without any dramas, never feel hungry and the thought of going back to how I used to feel makes me terrified.

Well worth trying for a couple of weeks just to see. I felt better literally in a matter of days. I wouldn't recommend anyone try this long term but I don't want to feel like I used to more than I'm worried about what I'm eating. Any anyway no one ever said a thing before when I ate 2 tubs of ice-cream in a day.

For the inevitable flamers. Get lost. not interested.

I did Keto during lockdown. Still fell asleep at inopportune times.

Anaemia?  (Unlikely if you did Keto but still)

Random guesses on the Internet?  Go see a doctor.

So aside from diet and iron etc...

What's your exercise schedule look like, and how much recovery are you doing?

If you've been overtraining consistently you will feel exhausted all the time and afternoon somnolence won't be a surprise

I had this a couple of years ago.  Got a blood test and it turned out to be a vitamin deficiency, B, or maybe it was D, not sure now. Come to think of it I've been pretty sluggish again lately so I could probably do with getting back for another test.

This is me completely. If it's not interactive i'm not interested.

It fits entirely with all the personality test stuff i've done...

I reckon being tired all the time is just a normal state of human functioning!

(Once all medical reasons are excluded!)

Me too. Lunchtime nap is my secret weapon.

Best tip I've heard was to do ironing. You are doing something to keep you awake but can still take in the presentation

Check. (Well, not army, but going to sleep at inopportune moments.)

Have you checked for sleep apnea?

Was this. Now treated, don't go to sleep during my 1 to 1s anymore...

same problem here, dont know the answer - yet.

I'm cutting out caffeine (I did drink a lot of diet coke) , and taking magnesium supplements - only been doing it for a couple of weeks so far, it *might* be having a positive effect, but too early to be sure.

How much sleep a night do you get on average, and is it worthwhile sleep? What steps have you taken to make your sleep more healthy? Is the room dark enough? Cool enough? Is the bed comfy? Do you stop using screens, do you go to bed at the same time each night? Do you have a sleep routine? Before diet or supplements, take care of the basics.

Humans need at least 8 hours of proper good sleep. Most folks don't manage it and your body will soon tell you when it needs more.

I haven't had a regular 8 hours in 45+ years.

You can purchase sleeping pills over the counter, called Melanin.

Exposed to sunlight, your body produces melatonin (pigment).

Qed, sunlight makes you sleepy.

I bet you’re a lot sharper around wintertime😂😂😂
