Yes it is branding. You could also argue that Bono went meta and parodied himself when he invented his alter-egos of The Fly and Mr MacPhisto

Just makes me think "you f######t... Go away".

You're drunk aren't you?

I suppose you think that John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe , Elton John Freddie Mercury and others were born with those names.

Big- L
Snoop-Dog
KRS-1
LL-Cool-J
Royce Da 5’9
Pit 10
Mode XL

The list is literally endless.

And you think mainstream rock/pop acts have moronic monikers? Those names sound like models of plastic vaginal stimulators.

He is a vastly over-rated (mostly by himself) singer who used to front a heavily marketed and decidedly average band.

He 'sang' in a teeth-grindingly awful faux Jamaican falsetto before developing a bit of a lentil obsession, followed rapidly by metamorphosis into a sort of Bono-lite.

A lot of the time he comes across ok ish, but there is always a background note of superiority in him. 'I know the truth, are you cool enough to be let in on the secret' type stuff.

He is very easy to ignore.

I was never sure whether U2 were better than The Police. But on reflection, I think U2 have The Edge.

Hey, if it's good enough as a middle name for Kermit then who are we to judge.

Op,

Ya, they are zombie maggots but not as parasitic as some of the bureaucratic jobworth. This group earned their wealth by leading/herding the zombie maggots and by using stoopid label names to represent them. 😈

Who pissed on your cornflakes this morning, then, and why do you care?
A very great many famous singers and performers over the decades have used stage names, it's standard practice, pretty much.

At which point in The Police's career did the heavy marketing actually occur, then?

He 'sang' in a teeth-grindingly awful faux Jamaican falsetto before developing a bit of a lentil obsession, followed rapidly by metamorphosis into a sort of Bono-lite.

Which tracks?
