I need at least a pair of new tyres for my wife's Hyundai i10. The rears are so old they've cracked and need pumping up weekly. Dad (who had the car from new) must have changed the fronts when they wore but fitted ditch finders. Mot due in a month and while it got through with advisory for the rear last year they are worse, deflate quicker, I'm definitely replacing those two. If I could get a decent price on 4 I'd do all four but given its just a town car/very local run about type car and my wife doesn't drive it hard, or far, I'll live with the ditch finders longer if needed.
Needs 165/60r14. So far my search is showing a decent brand tyre is ~£65 a corner! Lordy. That is black circles, Toyo proxes (c for efficiency, b wet grip). I was hoping for under £50 but not wanting more ditch finders I want a decent brand.... I'll get two and save for longer for the other 2 if necessary!
Anywhere else worth a try?
I recently got a pair of Toyo Proxes CF2 175/65R15 for £65 each (fitted) from etyres. They were marginally cheaper than Black circles at the time.
a decent brand tyre is ~£65 a corner! Lordy.
Seems reasonable - mine are £100 a corner usually!
These are the only things connecting you to the road.
I have a local tyre place we have used for years, and they easily match BlackCircles etc prices, fix punctures or rebalance for free etc.
My local independent tyre fitter was cheaper than any of the online places. He was also able to order in and fit them same day.
In the past I've also found other independents willing to price match or at least get close enough to an online price to make it worthwhile.
TLDR; go to your local indy!
I have used BlackCircles, eTyres, local mobile company (sadly no more) in recent past, but most recently have reverted back to Kwik Fit as prices have been the same or cheaper than elsewhere and it's just been convenient.
So far my search is showing a decent brand tyre is ~£65 a corner!
Not too bad.
Just ring round you local places.
Blackcircles are doing Kumho at £51.99 fully fitted. They'd do the job.
Kumho are genearlly good tyres and showing as £51.99 fully fitted price on Black Circles for Ecowing ES31s.
I've not had that particular tyre before, but have not had any bad experiences with the numerous ones I've had over the years.
As above, local place has beaten the big online places for our families cars
Have you seen the price of a Maxxis Minion?
But seriously, they're car tyres. They're the only thing keeping your fast, heavy lump of metal on the road. Trying to eek out every last mile, a year after the MOT tester told you they were shot, is not best practice.
Having to pump them up every week is ignoring a giant red flag waving right in your face.
Just used Halfords Auto centers 'tyres on the drive' for Continental Ecocontact ? some discount codes came up when I used Microsoft Edge browser.
Cheapest I could find for that tyre.
Anywhere else worth a try?
Your local garage, they'll all pretty much use the same wholesaler.
My local independent tyre fitter was cheaper than any of the online places. He was also able to order in and fit them same day.
This. Oatlands Tyres in Harrogate is my goto.
I've been impressed with the Kumho tyres we fitted to the MX5 after plenty of good reports on the forums. Obvioulsy a totally different size and sort of car but they've been great, done a couple of track days with them etc. Not a brand I'd had before but much better value than the other recommended tyre which was the Michelin Sport.
Your local garage, they’ll all pretty much use the same wholesaler.
+1
And serious, they're the only things keeping her out of a ditch / running someone over on a zebra etc etc - put proper tyres on.
<Kumho are genearlly good tyres and showing as £51.99 fully fitted price on Black Circles for Ecowing ES31s.

I've got ecowings on my car, and the wife just replaced hers with them. They're good tyres that do the job.
Edit: I've tried quoting, it didn't work.
I have zero love for Kumho tyres.
Over 10 years commuting 20k per year in small cars (MX5, Then VW polo) Kumho tyres were the only ones that took damage to the sidewalls - I had 3 (out of 8) that developed bulges. (in that time i've used Bridgestone, Goodyear, Hankook, Avon & uniroyal no damage to any of them)
Then we had the 4 on the van. three of four (which were brand new and properly load rated) failed with a massive burst of the inner sidewall, anywhere between 3k miles and 7k - The last didn't get beyond 7k miles, as I replaced it when the 3rd burst. Front nearside, then rear offside, then front offside. Kumho weren't interested.
I’ll live with the ditch finders longer if needed.
Don't. Change them now. It might only be driven around town, but when that kid steps out in front of you, you will want to be able to stop.
£65 a corner! Lordy.
That's just what these things cost now, unfortunately. Don't skimp. A medium brand is going to be ok, that includes Kumho, Nokian etc
£65 a corner is good. Avons for an Aygo are about that, and the tyres are only 155 x 13 ! Just pricing up MrsF's car, need 4 at about £140 a corner for known make, and it's nothing fancy.
£65 a corner?
Bargain!
I recently paid £184 for a single rear tyre for the Merc and that was with a 15% discount! Last time I bought tyres for the wife’s Clio, in Nov 20, they were about £55 each, the same tyre is £90 now.
+1 on local Indy, the one we use are very competitive. Price wise, also agree £65 a corner is OK. Tyres have gone up a LOT in the last year. My car takes 255/40 and they are about £240 each now!
Just because it's a small tyre, doesn't necessarily make it cheap, in fact if it's a weird size even if small they can be quite expensive and certainly more than a common 16 or 17 inch. £65 per corner sounds pretty decent to me.
Try Asda. Seriously. I ordered online through Asda. They were fitted by the same independent I normally use and cheaper than if I ordered directly. Bulk buy I guess.
My mum had the same car a few years ago and even then it was around that price for mid-level tyres. I always had Hankooks fitted for her as there was usually a deal to be had but they've gone upmarket a bit since Tyre Reviews reclassified them as a Premium brand.
I'd get the Kumho's at just over £50 a corner fitted all round, the i10 really does respond well to a decent tyre on it. I have the Toyo's on my Fabia and they are quite a hard compound. Lasting over 30k on the front but all are starting to show signs of small cracks after just one year so would be an issue on a low mileage runaround.
Costco do tyres. If you are a member. The only tyre they have in 165/60r14. is Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons £58. . A top brand all season tyre. Black Circles are £85 for the same tyre.
If you are a member treat the car to a set of 4. Even if that mythical child steps off the kerb when there is snow on the road you will stop in time.
See now my first reaction was £65? Is that what a small tyre costs these days? But then my brother recently fitted some larger tyres to his car and paid about £45. I expect to pay considerably more for tyres for my own car with its larger rims but was hoping for lower for little r14s, perhaps they aren't a common size.
Yes the ditchies will go too, when funds allow. While it's wrong to talk ill of the deceased..... What dad was thinking fitting those I'll never know! I thought the i10 just had bad geometry causing it's lack of grip until I took more notice of the tyre makes!
Kumho are better...? Hmm, mixed reviews.
Prepared to make a couple of phone calls to the local places, once armed with a price to beat/match.
Etyres, I'll try them. I've looked on asdatyres, camskill and tyresaver so far.
NOt sure about sources but I'm looking to replqace all 4 on my 7-seat MPV... £65 a corner for a recognisable brand sounds like a bargain!
Personally, I like an "all season" tyre - they seem to grip better on poor quality road surfaces than premium summer tyres, and give little away in noise/dry grip. In my experience they seem to lose grip more gradually than summer rubber, which seems to go all of a sudden. All Season seem to scrabble for grip before losing it totally.... They also tend to have softer side-walls enhancing comfort somewhat. Good for damp autumnal morniings/evenings...
Look online and see which local fitter they will use to fit, then ring local fitter direct ask for same tyre cheaper.
£65 is not expensive for tyres
Aha! Toyo nanoenergy £61 at etyres.
I've used plenty of the names mentioned above and they all seem much of a muchness tbh.
Last time ended up at Kwick Fit because they had an offer on that brought Michelins in at the same price as mid range. Been great so far.
We used to use Costco a fair amount. They occasionally have deals if you're buying multiple tyres....that is, if there's one nearby....and you're a member.
TBH those proxes aren't especially good, Toyo trade a lot on the brand.
These days practically anything from any decent brand will do a good job tbh, modern tyres are awesome. The only real gotcha is snow and mud performance- because modern midrange touring type tyres which are brilliant at everything else, generally absolutely suck at snow and mud, because they're basically 5 little narrow slick tyres in a row with really minimal tread. But for anything else, if you stick to a vaguely recognised brand you have to try pretty hard to go wrong.
If 165/60r14 is a bit of an odd size, it's worth checking the owners manual or here:
https://www.wheel-size.com/size/hyundai/i10/
Often you can fit a couple of different sizes, obvioulsly it will have to be 14" but you might be able to fit a slightly different width or profile.
The rears are so old they’ve cracked and need pumping up weekly
?!?
You know that those rubbery things on the wheels are all that keeps the car stuck to the road?
£65/corner sounds a bargain! Factor in a new spare if there is one - if the regular tyres are as crummy as described then you'll need a new one too.
Kumho is OEM for some Hyundai/Kia models
Son has something similar and the local indy tyre fitter had to order them in because of the unusual size (might not be exactly the same and I'm not going outside to look 🙂 ). This also means that choice is limited
I've had a few sets of tyres through Asda. Cheaper than going direct to the places that eventually fitted them.
Just had a look and for your size (but near my postcode so might affect results) Goodyear Vector 4seasons were only £75 a corner.
Just had a look and for your size (but near my postcode so might affect results) Goodyear Vector 4seasons were only £75 a corner.
That's where my money would go, bargain.
In cold, wet conditions when you really need extra grip - all seasons make a noticible difference. I swear by them.
I do love the stw preaching, thanks guys, keep up the good work. Yes I do know the job tyres do and clearly I've kept dangerous tyres on the car to hone my driving god skills and those of my wife. Through those skills we've kept the child maiming accidents to single figures and now I'm after a performance tyre for... For .. For something other than safety as that's of no interest.
Saw the vector 4 seasons at the same or less than the Toyo and considered them. Less wet grip though, can't see the wife out on snow, if it has snowed and we want to go somewhere the family octy has snow tyres on and yes I do know they are better in just cold weather (below about 8C) not just snow.... Still undecided.
Aha thanks Matty, I was trying to find that last night to check options
Yes Asda are actually a few pennies cheaper for the Toyo but not so convenient.
I need to check the spare but since it's been out the UV it shouldn't be cracked and ought to do is job.... Allowing me to take a phone call, go rescue the family, then go back to change the tyre on the i10 on the bike, somehow squeeze the bike in the i10 and drive it home. Probably.
Hmmm the proxes may not be great but they get a b for wet grip, but seeing any others better than c (but stopped looking past about £80). You may be right though North wind, I agree on the rest.
Right, let's check there aren't any other optional sizes and then make a choice...Toyo Vs vector 4 seasons
Just ordered 4 Goodyear Eagle Assymetric 6 for my Golf £280 fitted! 225/40/18
Costco had an offer on them, £20 a tyre off if you bought 4.
Too good to miss. As others have said always worth a look there.
Also better off phoning them as not all offers appear on the website.
My advice through experience, try both Black Circles & Asda. When you find the best price & fitting centre, phone them up & see if they can beat that price.
Quite often, they can.
That is a good price for a good tyre. Unsurprisingly thats the size I have on the family Skoda flavored enlarged golf. It feels weird to be paying similar for the i10 tyres.
Anyway, I have a price to beat and will try the Indy I use, another nearer that my mechanic mate/neighbour rates, and the one Asda would fit at.
Uniroyal have generally been pretty good for us on smaller cars like MX5 and Panda. Tend to have kerb protection strip from memory too.
Worth looking at a slight change in width/profile to open up a greater range of tyres. We did this for our Panda to get about 10x the choice and some much needed cushioning for the alloys.
neilnevill
Free MemberHmmm the proxes may not be great but they get a b for wet grip,
It's all kind of shite, though. They don't test every size, every application. Better than nothing but don't confuse that for facts
neil, you wrote '...when funds allow'.
Having seen your multiple posts on the watches thread, sell one or two to fund the replacement of tyres on your wife's car to make it less unsafe.
Yes Frank, you should have seen I did sell one a few weeks ago and have another for sale. If you look in the energy thread you'll also know I've been trying for a month now to get £1600 of credit back. It's just a matter of cash flow and with mot, insurance and mot on my own car due needing to manage that.
Tried the place that Asda would actually fit at and they couldn't get within a tenner. Let them offer another known brand bit still a fiver over Asda. Tried the place my mechanic neighbour and mate recommends, couldn't do the Toyo but could get close to the price with a falken however that has a lower rating on economy. Was about to go with Asda but had one last try with the Indy I last used and they matched the price, but the price was 'best price' and getting 4 not 2 wouldn't allow them any lower. I ordered 2. 10 mine later they call back, drop £4/tyre if I order 4 and a further £5/tyre if I'm happy with a higher speed rating version (t not h).....errrr let me think 😁. 4 x T rated toyos ordered at £55 each. WFH tomorrow so hopefully on the car by tomorrow night.

I'm good for tyres thanks, got one on each corner of my car!
Who's good for coats?

4 x Michelin cross climates 2 at BC £438 fully fitted for wife's car, called local tyre place who are BC premier fitting co. Their best price was £516.
Order placed via BC to be fitted at local tyre place.

Less wet grip? Compared to what? I was trying to get Vector4Seasons for my EcoSport, and there were none to be had via the supplier that work uses, pretty certain that my Ford would be putting more through the front tyres than an i10, in fact I know it does, and I’ve driven a lot of i10’s and it’s close relatives.
I ended up with Michelin CrossClimate2’s, and there’s a world of difference between those and the Goodyear OEM’s it came with. They cost me somewhere north of £200, £230-ish, I think, so the Vectors for significantly less would seem to be the ideal solution.
I have vectors on one of our cars. Seem to grip just fine in wet and snow.
Also had good experience with falken euroall and vredenstein quatrac.
Vector 4 seasons on my last 2 cars. As well as good wet grip and snow performance they were far quieter than the OE Bridgestones on my Octavia.
During the Beast from the East a few years ago I got out our estate when the unplowed snow was deep enough the front bumper was plowing through it. Main roads deserted as nobo else could get to them from unplowed/gritted side streets.
I hate searching for tyres. Every time I decide on a tyre, you see a review that there’s another one ranked better / higher / cheaper. I need to change the Pilot Super sports on my car soon, and seem to have settled for the new Primacy 4. Yes it’s not as “sports” but should be comfortable, got wet / winter grip and more economical on the long runs I do.
I’d really like to get some all seasons but that means moving from a staggered setup (bmw) which will cost a new set of alloys as well.
Not that it helps the OP but I'm looking forward to swapping the Toyos on our Mazda for vector 4 seasons.

I’d really like to get some all seasons but that means moving from a staggered setup (bmw) which will cost a new set of alloys as well.
Not if you're going for 'all season' tyres - the staggered set up only has issues on full winters & even then it's not a big problem.
If you can find the right mix of sizes then go for it.
I'm sure there are better tyres out there but I'm happy for now. The Toyos ended up being nanoenergy 3, at a good price for all 4 and should both pass the mot, and grip far better than the tyres dad had fitted.
As I said, I'm a fan of winter tyres but the i10 doesn't need them as it'll not get driven in such conditions. The Toyos age appropriate for the car and how it will be used.
Now if I could save as much from a local indy battery place over Tayna I'd be laughing as the family octy will need a new one this winter I think.

What, the four months of Nov thru Feb?
Costco are good if you want Michelin. They were cheaper than Blackcircles, and the tyre manager told me that if I'd waited for a Sale they'd have been cheaper still.
Yeah, if you need all four done then Costco is the place to go IF you are eligible for membership.
I just paid £110 +£20 fitting for a NOS Crossclimate+ on the Mondeo, I'd love to pay £60odd a corner. I've had Crossclimates on that for a few years now, better than the Nokains that were on before and a country mile better than the Goodyear Eagles before that.
Vredsteins on the bus seem to be holding up well, Had Nexen before that but they wore out quickly.
