Obviously none of you STWers in Wales or Scotland. Are any STWers living in England going to brave the boozer this weekend? I was a regular pub goer before lockdown but I think I'll give it a few more weeks before venturing in for a pint.

I'll give it a while to settle down.

I've been in my current house 5 years and still not visited by local, there was two but one isn't reopening, even though I haven't yet been to the remaining one I'd hate for it to close too so will make a point of calling in for a jar.

nah. Been really enjoying "pub" nights via Zoom actually 😂

Would have a pint in a beer garden mid-ride probably, if it weren't mega busy (so not this weekend!), can't see myself having an evening in the pub anytime soon though!

+1. I've done some opening material for a couple of pubs/venues but wild horses won't drag me into one this weekend.

Quite a few pubs near me so might take a stroll and if it’s like the Wild West I’ll wait a couple of weeks.

I've booked a table at my local for a couple of hours.
No idea what it'll be like but they're a very well organised bunch, and the fact I could get a table booked made it an easy decision.

Have a pub lunch booked at one of the quieter country pubs on Saturday. Really looking forward to it! White Horse at Graffham. Might even ride over.

Didn't we already get a thread for this?

Neither of my two locals are opening - one (independent, owned by landlord) has zero prospect of any distancing being implemented and don't want the hassle - yet; the other, the chain is not opening any "seasonal business" pubs.

...so I'm not.

I could go for a takeout pint on the local green though.

that's a great idea! All the local pubs I normally drink in are micropubs so are sensibly not re-opening. They've all been doing takeaway draught & bottles though which has been really popular with regulars so has kept them ticking over nicely through lockdown. Being proper drinking pubs, none do food so I guess they're not as stressed as some about re-opening.

Mrs Rider being double-factor high risk we choose to wait if/until treatment/situation improves before taking unnecessary risks.

A couple of us mtbers just recently began enjoying a distanced bottle on the trail once in a in a while. Find spot. Sit down. Give place a pub name. Drink bottle. Eat salted nuts.

So far we’ve had a nice quiet beer at the ‘Wolf Creek‘ and the ‘Dead Stop‘. Next move is to support local beer production by buying MHB tins and heading out with a couple of those to find a new popup (popub?) venue.

A bunch of hyperactive older teens walked past the Wolf Creek (highly unusual for location) and gave us a long look as if we were aliens/in breach of some riverside convention. But they moved along soon after seeing the strength of our beards.

The pseudo-lockdown made the local countryside resemble coastal Ireland (ie gaggles of bored younger folk walking country miles and nattering). Now it’s over expect them to no longer sully the countryside with anything other than hatchbacks, Maccy D wrappers, gas canisters and energy-drink tins.

Supposed to be doing a ride for a mates 50th birthday on Saturday which will probably include pub stops, not really sure what to do because they usually turn into a proper session.
Do I want to be around the first day idiots or worse still be a first day idiot.

My daughter manages a pub and it's booked up for weeks ahead, so a casual pint isn't going to happen for a while!

It will be carnage so will be giving it a miss for another month or so assuming the Leicester thing doesn't go country wide....which it will because people can't wait to get back to 'normal'!

Won't be trying to visit a pub for a few weeks yet. The ones worth the visit are booked ahead for weeks, the ones not worth going to I imagine will be like New Year's Eve with lots of fights outside as people are told they can't come in.

Maybe over the summer there might be some chance for a proper socially distanced, mid afternoon, mid ride stop in a rural beer garden. But struggling to see the attraction of having to ride and then sit 2 metres from a mate.

I'm trying to book a local American diner place for my wife's birthday on Saturday but won't be going anywhere near a pub.
There are two pubs in our village - one is opening for food at the weekend the other has said he's staying closed for another couple of weeks whilst things settle down a bit.
I have a feeling town centre 'Spoons are going to be carnage on Saturday.

Not Saturday. A midweek evening next week, hopefully.

A desire to do my bit and give a business my money more than an overarching craving for draught beer.

Absolutely no chuffin chance. Pubs will be a nightmare and full of the worst type of people and once people get pished social distancing will go out of the window, tempers will rise and it’ll all kick off.

A mid ride, mid week, mid afternoon pint in a country pub in a few weeks time? Definitely

The matter of coronavirus is now closed. Come on – it has to be. Otherwise why would the government open pubs for the first time in three months ON A SATURDAY? Talk about a midsummer night’s scream. You would have to have literally zero understanding about what people are like to do this, unless it was totally safe both in terms of disease transmission and public order.

Leicestershire Police Chief Constable Simon Cole said people would have to be "pretty daft" to leave the lockdown area for a pint of beer when pubs reopened elsewhere

Can't shake the feeling there will be a lot of daft.

A friend has booked an outdoor table at a place in / a short walk from Sheffield city centre and I am looking forward to a few pints.

Living on my own, the situation is really beginning to grate and while I appreciate that sounds pretty selfish I fear the ever deteriorating mental health is far more damaging to me than the likelihood of getting the virus if I continue to be fairly careful.

I fully anticipate that the goings on in some places on Saturday will provide the media with some great shaming material for Sunday.

Three of us are riding out to a country pub with a huge beer garden for a few Saturday lunch time but then back mine for a BBQ - I'd not fancy being out anywhere in the evening.

My mate who's in a similar situation chose us to be his "bubble", that's helped (him and us) massively. We're not pubbing, but beers/xbox/films on a weekend have been good.

Thanks Malvern Rider and Versus for your suggestions; video calls have largely dried up in the last month but I have had some distanced outdoor meetings with friends. Bubble houses on offer have a covid nurse or contain people that have vulnerability and as such I decline as know this will end and want to come out the other side of this with those people in my life!

Fear not, I am going to the pub on Saturday and may repeat on Sunday too since that's the annual milestone and I am not doing that alone!

I hope they’re clearing out all the Covid wards ready to accommodate all the people who are going to get glassed on Saturday night.

Maybe they could use those Nightingale Hospitals for that? They’re conveniently placed in city centres

I think I'll be leaving the weekend pub visit to let the wands make their magic. But I am looking forward to a walk over the hill to Bakewell for a few in the week. Luckily it's a town that generally does it's trade in the day, and the evening's are pretty dead.

All the government’s Social Media output, including from the Treasury for god sake, is doing very little to explain good practice for reopening (book a table, give contact details, don’t just randomly visit all the local pubs in one night, expect table service, be outside if you can, don’t hassle staff if service is slower than normal or prices higher than you expected…) but just cheering on “the big day” without any word of caution, or helping to set expectations. I really feel for pub managers and staff…

It was quite heartening to see the polls on Peston showing 75% of people thinking there will be a second wave later in the year and suggesting the blame would lie partly with those not following the advice and the poor guidance from the government.
I would have thought more than 25% of the population were right weapons so I’m taking the majority outrage/pessimism as a good thing.

The closest I'll get to a pub will be to wander around Lincoln Uphill with a camera and watch/take pics.
As for that Treasury tweet up there ^^^ it's irresponsible in the extreme; I pity the bar staff being forced to deal with the great british public with 'british common sense' turned upto 11.
Will johnson or any of his clown circus be anywhere near a pub - unless for a totally stage managed photo-op?
No, but they encourage the little people to do so.

Best day to reopen the pubs? On a football Saturday of course!! Especially when the great British nation has been deprived of the great British boozer for three months.

Have you seen the shit they left behind on Bournemouth beach last week?

Don’t ancient bylaws allow you to shoot them with crossbows after midnight, or something?

That should greatly enliven the 3am fights outside the kebab house, of which there will be many

Looks like Wales pubs may open on the 13th. We can just get back to our van then, but the site has a pub. The site is currently in a state of shock at Welsh Govt's tweet about the pubs this morning as they aren't sure what to do - busily looking at table services, 2m social distancing and outside only.

I won't be going near it - there will be a bunch of retired 'hiss heads' from 'Ingerland' all getting ship faced. We've got some heavy boozing OAP's on our site, never mind locals, and those from other sites. Knowing the site owner, Mr 'Tight Arse' it will be open.

The Friday night when 'lockdown' was announced, the pub was rammed with them - I had to go in the pub to find the site owner (he was getting hissed) as all our electrics had failed. I'd already decided I wasn't going near pubs, and it was full of vulnerable people.

Nope.

Not least because since getting Coronavirus, one pint is about my limit.

But also because my local is a good old fashioned, cramped, low-ceilinged, slightly-rowdy-at-the-weekends, boozer.

I love it, but I'm not gonna be in there the first weekend. Or the second.

The taverns are full of gadabouts making merry this eve, and though I may press mine face against the window like an urchin at a confectioners, I am tempted not by the sweetmeats within.

A dram in exchange for the pox is an ill bargain indeed.

They were queueing before 6am when Primark re-opening in Wales recently, IIRC.

Doris, can you give a bit more info around this one:

Nope.

Not least because since getting Coronavirus, one pint is about my limit.

(Apologies if I am trivialising something nasty that happened to you, I've no idea how severe it was)

As raised in a previous thread, for the last 3 months I have been completely unable to drink without getting a hangover. One 330ml bottle gives me a headache and wooziness in the morning. 2 makes me feel really rough. I've always been a lightweight, but it's got much worse.
To the extent that I've actually switched to alcohol free beeer.

I've been wondering if I might have had CV, and this is a result of it.

mehr, same here,I'd love to go out for a meal but if that means sitting a plastic box being served by someone wearing PPE with the nearest diners 2m away I'll stick with a take away.

I can't understand why pubs can open but gyms and dance studios can't. I'm sure it would be much easier to maintain social distancing between health conscious and sober people than the idiots likely to be out tomorrow. Plus gyms provide both mental and physical benefits, it's questionable whether pubs provide the former, they definitely don't provide the latter.

Colleague's birthday on the weekend, says he's going to the pub. I said, Portsmouth (nearest city) is considering reintroducing lockdown. He said the virus is mostly made up and nowhere near as bad as made out, and we'll all find this out in the future. He finished with "Mark my words" which I'm pretty sure is David Icke's catchphrase.

I'm sick and tired of the sanctimonious crap being pedaled by the media on this, about wave of drunks flooding the streets on Saturday, about fighting and obnoxiousness. It's pure snobbery.

The vast majority of pub goers are just grateful they can go for a pint or 2, see their mates and perhaps show some support to their local publican. The drunks and the idiots have already seen everyone in the park and in their back gardens. I don't doubt there will be the odd bit of havoc, but it'll be a tiny minority that'll be blow up on the front page of the Daily Mail.

It's like the beaches all over again. People are doing exactly what the government has said it's OK to do and are told they're wrong to do so. If you don't want to go, don't, that's fine, but to be overly judgmental about those that are going is a bit off IMO.

And breathe...

I can’t understand why pubs can open while we’re closing schools (locally - but we’re not the only area).

To the extent that I’ve actually switched to alcohol free beeer.

Tiny Rebel - Clwb Tropica Alcohol Free - recommended.

People are doing exactly what the government has said it’s OK to do and are told they’re wrong to do so.

They are getting told a lot of things by the government, one of which is PARTY ON! People can express their concerns and suggest a steady and careful opening up of the trade (or that it should perhaps be delayed), these ideas aren’t automatically ‘overly judgmental’ because they are at odds with one of the government’s messages.

@thegeneralist oh, that's interesting!

I had 3 or 4 days of fever etc, and since then it's been 12 weeks of really lingering fatigue. I can potter about the house and manage a walk around the block, but it's a struggle - this week I've even had to have a lie-down on my lunch break, I've been so tired (my job only involves sitting at a desk in the spare room!).

But for some reason, booze now goes to my head more quickly. Normally it's not unheard of to drink half a bottle of wine in the evening and next day I'd shake off any grogginess pretty quick. Since CV, anything more than one glass, or one 330 beer, and I really feel it, and start feeling rough (not just the next morning). I've kind of lost the taste for it, too - normally I'd have to decide not to drink any more because that's the sensible thing to do. The last 3 months I finish my 1 glass of wine and then put the kettle on, I just don't want any more. I miss being able to settle down for the evening with a few glasses!

Post viral fatigue and alcohol don’t mix well, sadly. My other half experienced this (not due to this virus), hence us having tried a fair few low and no alcohol beers. That Tiny Rebel is the favourite so far.

People are doing exactly what the government has said it’s OK to do and are told they’re wrong to do so.

Pretty sure the Goverment can't make it's mind up, "Be aware", "1m+", "Avoid public transport", but go to a crowded pub and get pissed...

If they were really serious they'd mandate masks in all public areas, but they're switched to the 'just ignore it and it'll go away' strategy.
