I saw the out-of-hours Dr this morning (after a particularly bad night) and he suspects I may have Whooping cough (to be confirmed next week when I see my regular GP). My Mum tells me that I wasn't vaccinated against it because of issues with my older sister so it makes sense! I'm now feeling pretty sorry for myself as I've been told it may take a few months to get better and its looks lovely out (even if it is muddy) and I can't get out on my bike 🙁
I've got it. Had it for a month now. Scary as Ive got a year old baby.
You should be fine to ride yuh bike, just don't go mad pushing your self. You're contagious in the first few weeks but after that you're good to go. I have no other symptoms just this damn cough, sometimes i cough so hard it makes me dizzy. Cool huh?
I've just about seen it off. I got in in maybe June? Some languages call it the hundred day cough.
Started with a cold, not even a bad one. Then a cough. Then the cough got worse, to the extent that i'd get classic coughing fits that would just go on and on and leave me retching and vomiting. That stage lasted maybe 4-6 weeks, and then has gradually receded. I originally saw the doc after about 3 weeks when the cough wasn't going away and he said it was an asthma related cough. Once the vomiting started I saw another GP who confirmed it by blood tests.
I didn't stop riding once I'd been confirmed that it was whooping cough. The only thing to be aware of, if it was like mine is that odd things tend to start the cough off - including spicy food / pepper catching in your throat, sudden laughter, shouting, or heavy breathing - which was relevant to the riding because several times I was working hard on the bike and breathing hard, and then the cough comes on - and the combo of being short of oxygen already followed by a prolonged coughing fit, I nearly blacked out a couple of times. But once you know what's on - if you feel a cough coming (and you do) I'd hop off the bike and get ready for it.
Once you know it's what you've got it's not that big a deal tbh. Annoying rather than debilitating. First 4-6 weeks of the cough are the worst bit, then it's no biggy.
[edit - oh BTW vaccinated or not is no guarantee, the vaccine wears off in the teenage years probably, hence even if you are vaccinated then you can get it. It's parents that don't immunise their kids that are allowing it to gain a foothold again - according to my doc]
Thanks guys, but the reason I can't ride at the moment is that I keep getting out of breath really easily - just walking up the stairs is difficult at times!
It'll get better, might take a few weeks but it'll pass.
