A long-term friend of ours has a young son who is not very well. Like, suddenly out of the blue, life-threateningly not very well. He's in hospital, has been for some time now, and has had a couple of operations to have various lumps of assorted innards scooped out of him. He's still in hospital now and seems to be on the mend but is still not very well.

His mother is a single parent and there's a daughter at home too and... eh, I don't need to finish this sentence do I, you can probably imagine what she's going through. For added LOLs being self-employed she's effectively lost her income because of this. One of her other friends (whom I don't know) has set up a fund-raising page which you can see here:

https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-jo-whos-had-to-give-up-work

However, wait, no, come back, I'm not chugging. I'm not asking for money, though of course it would be awesome if you found it in your hearts to donate and I'd love you forever and be your friend and hug you and pat you and call you George.

Rather, I'm asking for a few minutes of your time and the price of a stamp. I thought it might be cool if the boy were to get postcards from totally random strangers wishing him well. Doubly so if you're living further afield, "greetings from New Zealand!" would likely blow his mind. If you want a theme, Ren is hugely into dinosaurs and likes (xbox) video games.

What do we think? Is this something the STW Massive could perhaps get behind? It'd mean the world to me, to Jo and to Ren if you could take a couple of moments for a random act of kindness.

I've had permission from Jo to share their address so if you can do this (and please please do this or it'll fall flat and I'll look like a nob) the address is:

Ren
17 Fieldside
Carlton
DN14 9FQ

Will you send Ren a postcard please?

What a lovely idea.

I'll get my daughter to pitch in with her best dinosaur drawing.

As a bonus it will give me a good reason to go to post office to post something else I've been meaning to sort for more than a week

Oh boy, its catching.

Was my first thought, too (my daughter, not yours)

Worth a slice of my birthday money, too is that.

Lol if it's kosher she's a girly teen into make up, if it's dodgy block block block🤦🏼‍♀️😂

The daughter's name is Seryn.

Yup, you know how to pull our strings. Donated and postcard sent. Feeling most dusty here.

Who knew there were online postcard services?? Can recommend https://www.postsnap.com/ for those UK based who won't have an interesting stamp / location.

I've just realised, I didn't say:

Ren has NO IDEA I've posted this, I just bounced it off his mum. So the whole thing (if it becomes a thing, and please let it become a thing) will be a total surprise to him.

Purely for "...and hug you and pat you and call you George." I'm in.

Will hunt out a suitably dinosaur themed postcard and chuck some money in too.

Nice one Cougar.

Done, and thank you for the reminder that I forgot to get my sister a birthday card, I can get one of them when I get a card for Ren.

I do so hate for a good pop culture reference to go to waste.

Well, it's actually from Steinbeck, so actual culture.

Nice work Cougar - genuinely lovely thing to organise.

Donated some cash and will try and get a postcard sorted.

What sort of xbox games does he play/like/want? Any ideas? Might have something suitable knocking about.

I said, “I don’t know where this is going but…” and posed your question.

To avoid creepiness, I just thought if there's a simple answer like "Rainbows" or "Ninjago" then there'll be something else along with Dinosaur related goods.

Was looking for something Dinosaury to send but don't have much, except this.

https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-christmasaurus/tom-fletcher/shane-devries/9780141373348

It's on its way.

If I think of something suitably Arctic Monkeys will send. A year's Spotify subscription from STW? I mean, it can't be great for her either.

I know you said he's an Xbox chap. Does he have it in hospital with him.? I've got a spare PS4 and some games lying around here they are welcome to if he is need of some more in hospital entertainment.?

@Cougar, I was telling my 9 year old son about this at breakfast this morning.  He looked thoughtful for a moment before getting up and disappearing off upstairs for a while.

He came  back down with one of his beloved toy dinosaurs and a little note he'd written:

"To Ren, I am sorry to hear you are unwell and I hope you get well soon.  And I like dinosaurs too and I thought that you would like the one that I will mail to you."

So, by later this afternoon a toy dinosaur with note from Nobbingsford Junior and a postcard from sunny Whitley Bay will be winging its way to Ren.  Hope it cheers him up a bit.  This weekend's beer money also redirected to a much more worthy cause.

Brilliant idea mate!

It is a truth universally acknowledged that this forum is home to a small number of weapons-grade strokers.

However, it is also home to a much larger number of just blimmin' nice people, and threads like this are a testament to that. Well done us.

(I'll get a card tomorrow)

I hope it cheers him up, because it’s just ruined me.

Amen brother.

I live somewhere boring so no postcards here, but I've chucked a bit of money in to help out, and asked Amazon to send a grown-up dinosaur colouring book and some fancy pens - might help pass the time!

Sidenote: obviously there are lots of people out there in need of a little help, and I don't know these ones in the slightest. The reason I decided to bother today is because you, Cougar, always seem like a decent person on here, and a friend of a friend and all that... so be in no doubt that a big part of why people have done something good is down to you.
