Obviously Tom Cruise is a joke, but who should do it? Although not really physically big enough I think a younger Clint Eastwood would work. I'm struggling for a modern day actor who could fill his shoes, any ideas?

John Travolta played a good MP in Basic and The Generals Daughter but might be a little bit too old for it now.

Dolph has the build, but comes over a bit too Swedish. Maybe if they punched his face in a bit. 🙂

What about that big werewolf guy from True Blood? He's well buff.

He's not really meant to be gym buff, just a naturally big strong guy.

A roughed up Hugh Jackman could be ok, Liam Neeson is a bit old now and not really handsome enough. For me they need to exude military, even when dressed otherwise.

I always picture him looking a bit like jason statham, but he again is too short

I think Thomas Jane would be good. He looked pretty big in The Punisher.
Hugh Jackman maybe (Wolverine).
The Captain America guy (Chris Evans), is too young. Reacher is late 30's when he gets out of the army.

I don't think that the guy who plays him has to be 6'5" as Reacher is supposed to be, but he has to be tall, reasonably built and "rugged" enough in appearance to carry off the demeanor. Cruise is a joke in the role.

Stuey01, agreed, he doesn't need to be exactly 6'5", but he needs to be rugged and imposing - basically the opposite of Tom Cruise. I'm a bit peeved at the author Lee Child for selling out, surely he has enough money not to need to?!

Cruise is a joke in the role.
Presumably Ronnie Corbett wasn't available.
It's stressed enough in the books that he's BIG!
But Hollywood is a world unto itself - when they think 'big' they think of a big name.

with hands like a bunch of bananas or a catchers mitt! This is what annoys me, the author reinforces this description in every book, again and again, then he sells out to the scientologist! 🙄

Statham's accent can ruin any film and he's too small anyway. Joe manganiello is too much of a ladies man, Jack Reacher would be Mr Primark and not pretty.

(edit) i've only read the one Reacher book, Without Fail - it was god-awful. Did i just happen across a particularly bad example, or are they really not for me?

It's not just the height, it's the overall size and presence. The rock is who I would expect Hollywood to cast, but I think that would dumb it down too much. To me Hollywood are really missing out on the opportunity for a great series of films, hence they should have used someone new and molded them to it. What a waste!

Interesting choice loum, but I don't see Reacher in a half leopard print shirt. 😆

I think the way they'll get round the height issue is for all the other actors to be shorter than Cruise

No, they're all identical. I massively enjoyed reading three or four, then got bored.

I always pictured Reacher as being fairly homely. Russell Crowe maybe.

Reacher is 6' 5" tall (1.96m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100–115 kg). He has ice-blue eyes and dirty blond hair. He has very little body fat, and his muscular physique is completely natural (he reveals in Persuader, he has never been an exercise enthusiast). He is exceptionally strong but is not a good runner.[4] Reacher's strength is combined with his savant intellect and military training, analyzing his environment and opponents at extremely high processing speeds.

Yeah that's cruise alright......I saw the trailer in the pictures but couldn't really take cruise seriously in this kind of role.

Eric Banna or Mickey Rourke
I certainly think that while the height is important, so is the "bulk" - Jack Reacher is basically everything that Tom Cruise is NOT. So disappointed in this casting choice, Danny de Vito would have been just as plausible !

Karl Urban? I know he's done Judge Dredd and Dr McCoy recently, but not alot of acting's required. Perhaps Eric Bana with hair? Not a Star Trek fan here, no sir, certainly not......

My Mrs is appalled by the choice of Tiny Tom and hasn't stopped going on about it 🙄 "HE'S SO NOT Jack Reacher"
She reckons that Jason Isaacs would do the trick.

Having read all the Reacher books* I could have topped meself when I head The Short One was set to play him.
Can only presume he has a production company, wot bought the rights, and he had to put himself front & centre...
FWIW I'm cannot come up with any name for who should play him.
Mrs MM agrees with those who suggest Liam Neeson. Gerrard Butler also tripped of her tongue.

*They are all cut from the same block, as are many - but, have to say, FWIW, I thought the most recent, Wanted Man, was the weakest I've read...

I reckon the guy who plays Christopher Chance in Human Target would fit the bill. Mark Valley: Big lad, blue eyed, blonde hair.

My first choice would be Max Martini from The Unit & Revenge (along with other shows). I agree Mark Valley also looks like Reacher with the "ice blue eyes".
I had a thought recently maybe one of the Hemsworth boys and one of the others could play his brother when he comes into it.
I would have even preferred Russell Crowe to Tom Cruise!

Unfortunately, although I think Liam Neeson is a great actor he too isn't Reacher - tho a better choice than Tom. I have been waiting for these books to be made into film and when it happens I can't go and see them 🙁

Can't believe we are on page two and nobody has mentioned Chuck Norris. On second thoughts scratch that, he's far to hard to play Reacher.
