I did that once, in the boil wash.
The blades opened much more easily afterwards. The pen hadn't leaked and it wrote first time!

Yeah.... The one time I turned up with a pannier to a gig, I forgot I was carrying my Topeak Alien. I had to surrender it, and the joints...

I got the knife back.

Thought I'd lost my multitool, found it earlier in the rucksack that has not been used since last year's holiday!

I carry a leatherman weatherman micra on my keys, really useful, in fact I used it today at fishing.
Never been through the wash though.

Regularly, but all mine are fixed blade and sheath. Less likely to end up in washer, but much more likely to raise comment...

I always carry a Leatherman Wave for work, and before that a Swiss Army. I'm lost without one, and on my days off I find myself reaching for it on my belt only to find it missing. I'm very surprised, given the heightened levels of security at venues I go to, that A- its rarely found on a search and B- never questioned.

Leatherman Micra on my house keys - gets used daily.

Cheap folding multi tool thing (pliers, knife, screwdrivers thing) lives in my camelback other than that never do now. As a cub, scout etc. I would always have carried a little pen knife.

I have a 6" blade lock-knife in my Rucksac and it comes in very useful sometimes. I lend it to anyone who needs a knife and it always gets comments....

"you'll get knicked carrying that" etc....

But I asked my Sister (she's a DC with the local Rozzers) and she said I'd probably be ok as I'm too old to be stopped and searched! Blooming cheek of 'em 😛

I assume you got in the line 'well you should have checked the pockets before washing them'.

Me, normally a Gerber multi tool, but I gave to remember more and more to take it off before entering certain buildings.

Always got my Charge Tti with me - often carry the locking molegrip one too, and got a Micra on my car keys. Plus a torch. And a titanium prybar on my keyring.

Now that I write all that down...

Accidentally took a leatherman wave into a high security* prison the other day. Glad no one noticed; could have been awkward, I'm fairly sure there's rules against that sort of thing. In my defence, they invited me, I'd rather not have been there...

Lock knife isn't a good plan though you do have the reasonable use excuse I guess.

Bit of a daft rule IMO, the lock on an Opinel is more useful for keeping it shut than anything else (have a carbon No.4 and a bigger stainless No.7 IIRC, only the bigger one is a locker)

No, no need anymore and no point in carrying one around in a city.

Svord mini peasant here, it is supposed to be legal to carry yet the extended tang stops it closing on your own fingers in use. The tang can be used as a mini pry bar, and usefully it is easy to open one handed. Mainly just carried at work though.

A Swiss Army knife I have carried one all my life and use it daily , I can't take it into court or prison but otherwise I usually have it in my pocket.

I was kicked out of the Swiss Army for using a Leatherman

Leatherman squirt on my keyring (along with a Fenix LD01). Occasionally a Leatherman Charge Ti if my day is likely to warrant it. Lost my 20+ year old opinel no. 7 going through Bristol airport security as it was in the picnic bag containing the kids packed lunches 😐

My Leatherman used to go everywhere with me including flights. Pre 9 11 the only time it was taken off me and put in the hold was on a couple of occasions flying from Gatwick to Edinburgh. I could go anywhere else in the world with it with no issues. It used to go to restaurants bars even nightclubs at times, it never left me and I was never questioned anywhere ever.

Genuine question (I promise), but what are you lot doing on a daily basis that warrants the use of said tools?

I'd like to own something similar as I appreciate the gizmo/machinery, I'd probably put in in my bike pack for longer days out - but other than prising a stone out of my shoe, i'm struggling to think of what use it would be.

I'm loving the look of some of the kit on that there link /\ , but I don't know my choil from my jimping - whats the 'essential' kit?

Mine's mostly used for cutting things too 8)

Last time it was 'out' it was packaging materials, prior to that it was wiring harness tape, prior to that sharpening a pencil.

I just love having such a handy and versatile thing 😯

Cutting string/tape, blades and scissors. Tightening/loosening screws, screw driver. Pliers for nuts n bolts. Big nasty blade for fishing tea bag out when you don't have a spoon! Needless to say , I'm lost without it.

so your job involves looseing and tightening screws, wouldnt a screwdriver set be better?
For tea bags I use my finger tips, or a spoon.

Dont get me wrong, im going to buy one of these things - I have visions of it using it whilst camping with my son and him thinking just how cool I am. Probably.

Frankly I don't see the fascination either. I carry a multi tool on my bike but I'd rather not have the blade as I have never used one. Pretty much the only place where a knife is used where there isn't a better tool for the job is in food preparation. I hate it when I have to use a Stanley knife.

Frequently it's not about having the ideal tool for the job, but having a tool for the job. A multi tool is always on you. That is why they are useful.

I've got a tiny one in my communting backpack Leatherman Squirt I think, I'm sure the blade snapped off that years ago, not that I ever need it while commuting. The pliers have been useful for tightening mudguard bolts though.

I've got a bigger one in my MTB camelback, only ever used the knife for cutting up maltloaf. Nowadays I just bite it straight from the loaf like an animal.

When DIYing I often haave a fold out stanley knife clipped to my belt and it's very useful, but outside of that situation I just don't need to cut stuff very often!

I was called out to a site I've not been to before on Saturday and only found out once I was there that I needed a square block shaped key to get through a small access hatch. Thankfully the bottle opener/ flat screwdriver on my pen knife was a good fit. It would've been a wasted 80 mile round trip without it.

I always carry a pen knife, they just come in handy.

cutting the foil off the top of a wine bottle
opening the occasional archaic letter
cutting my fingernails
swapping batteries in our sprogs toys
cleaning between my teeth
sharpening pencils
whittling a bone chess set in my cell

yes, I have many things better at all of those individual jobs, but I am usually too lazy to go and get them, when the penknife is just right there

Last thing I used mine for was adjusting the door closer on the office door. Went from a teeth jarring, door frame threatening slam to a satisfying shoosh-clunk. Leatherman wave.

To be honest, there's a million (well maybe not quite a million) little jobs that I use it for that I wouldn't have considered attempting without a leatherman on my work belt; I'd just have to book estates to come and sort it. So my leatherman is used for saving the NHS literally [s]thousands[/s] [s]hundreds[/s] some quid.

Edit; cme to think of it, our building is maintained by a PFI type of thing, so probably MEEEELLIONS!

Opinel No. 10 as a day-to-day knife. Leatherman Surge if I'm sorting out odds and sods (but it's a bit heavy to carry round on the off-chance).

I do feel sorry for those poor souls with a desk job and no excuse to carry something big and stabby 😉

Ive carried a Victorinox Swiss Army knife pretty much everywhere since I was 11 years old.

I still have my 24 year old veteran alongside why others.

I have a Leatherman Sideclip which i carry every day at work. Just the other day, for example; someone snapped the key off in a lock, and 10 seconds later i'd retrieved the broken bit! I was carried out of the building on a wave of triumph!

I actually carry two normally. The victorinox is used for various things at work, from the screwdriver bit undoing/tightening stuff, flicking stones out of Man hole covers to chopping the tops of my strawberries. I rarely cut anything with it as I also carry a lock knife/Stanley knife combo thing like [url= https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rolson-Tools-62852-Tradesman-Knife/dp/B003ZDNVA0 ]this[/url] Love the fact it just takes normal blades.

Slimjim ...Making sharp stabby things is my job! So I use them for a lot of jobs in the workshop that are simply easier to do with a knife. My leather man gets used when I need something more than a very sharp thing....

Leatherman Kick. Always when riding and doing work around the house, but I don't carry it if I'm just out on errands or whatever.

If I'm at work wearing a suit or blazer, I have a Swiss Card in my to pocket. Otherwise I'll have a Victorinox Cybertool on me somewhere. Lost one at airport security in Mumbai and another at Lisbon 🙁

Security at Prestwich once missed my Victorinox Rucksack knife and let it into the cabin. This was despite the bag it was in going through the scanner. I have had a lowered opinion of airport theatre since that flight.

Multi-tool- which came in useful in sorting dropping seat post yesterday!

Knife? I have had a mini knife on a multi-tool to cut rope when sailing or camping (Swiss copy) but not people or self defence.

Knife on it's own? nope/never.

I don't carry anything daily, but have a multi tool in my bike bag, as you never know when it'll be handy.

I did however last year find a small knife in my camera bag in Addis Ababa airport after arriving from London. Think maybe my GoPro power pack (large battery with lots of wires coming out of it......) might have distracted security and they didn't check properly.
