There was a thread a while ago discussing new bed and mattress options.
There was someone who gave a load of good advice, I think he used to work for Vispring?
Looking for a new mattress now.
Anyone know which thread it was? Search isn't coming up with much.

Usual answer for pocket sprung mattresses is to take a look at the John Ryan equivalents of the bigger / more expensive store bought mattresses. Down side is that you can't try them in a store, up side is that you get way better value.
Artisan Naturals here and and it's so comfortable, 8 years in and I'd buy another in a heart beat when it gives up.
I'd just find a local shop where you can try them out and find one which is the most comfortable for you.

We have gone Vispring for all our beds. Still don’t get many years out of them but they are comfy, if not chuffing expensive for their bottom of the range
Repeat Vispring owner, here. As above, pricey but worth it. Not sure if that is a humble brag about the er "usage" of the bed Funky, but we have found they last a long time.

We have had a number of mattresses over the years, the best were Blindcraft traditional pocket spring. They were middle of the road price. Currently on an unused second hand from marketplace, it's pocket sprung with a layer of memory foam. It is supremely comfortable and not hot.
A suprise vote for basic mattresses - I'm sleeping better than ever and back pains I had disappeared after we moved and bought a basic extending sofa bed from IKEA, intending it for the spare room once other stuff was moved over. It has a fairly thin memory foam mattress over wooden slats, not much to it but it's brilliant, still using it a couple of years later. Reminds me of the rather firm hotel mattresses in Taiwan. I wouldn't buy something like that from a shop try-out but I sleep really well on them.

Definitely recommend John Ryan. We got one after recommendations from here and a couple of other places. Phoned them up a few times and their team suggested the Artisan Naturals would be the best option.
It's so comfortable for both of us we love it.

Not sure where you live but I have found lour local bedding shop an excellent place with a range of mattresses and good prices. Really friendly and helpful guys (brothers) who run it too.

I love my Otty mattress and pillow. It's a hybrid of springs and memory foam. A joy to get into and about 5 years in at least. I love that you can lie right up to the edge of the mattress and it doesn't move or roll you together if sharing. Only problem is I can't stay at anyone's house now because I can't sleep in anything else.
I have an Emma mattress and can’t make my mind up if it’s good or bad. It feels very comfy when you first lay down but have had lower back pain for a while now that may or may not have coincided with getting the mattress. I can’t remember what came first. I usually wake up with a sore back but always put it down to me not stretching enough etc etc the night before.
My wife seems to rate it pretty well, but she could sleep on a bed of nails and still be comfy and get a good nights sleep
Little bit of thread drift but how do you go about finding a mattress that works for you without spending a fortune? My wife constantly complains about a sore hip in the morning and we've been through a few mattresses. I've suggested speaking to a physio as it feels like it's worth getting to the root cause and starting from there but didn't get a positive response. Does anyone have any thoughts before we buy another mattress?

Is she 'shapely' and a side sleeper? I read something that contrary to popular opinion if you are a side sleeper even if you are not light a medium or soft mattress is best. A firm mattress does not contort to your shape putting stress on spine and hips - you want your spin straight and your lower hip and shoulder need to be pressed well into the mattress to achieve that. Another trick as a side sleeper is to sleep with a pillow between your legs - apparently good for hips.
Our last mattress was a John Ryan (called Factory Beds Direct at the time) Origins Pocket Latex which is now knackered. Just checked and its exactly 13 years old and the equivalent from them now is 150% more than we paid for it. I think we are going to go for one from Highland Blindcraft which have a great reputation and are an amazing organisation.

you can definitely see where they've cut costs. Trad mattresses are double sided - there is wadding over the springs on both sides, and usually some around the sides as well. Emma has only a very thin fabric to the sides and bottom, and layers of foam to the top.
Felt comfortable to me. Save some money and buy a reconditioned one from them (returned mattresses get a completely new cover).

We've got a pure latex mattress from https://www.latexsense.co.uk/ 9 years old now but still comfortable. I *like* the fact that foam mattresses don't bounce - means you don't get woken by partner if they get up in the night. (though pocketsprings are meant to be the same they still transmit some movement). Very heavy though.
Ours is has a layer of latex on top of a 1500 pocket sprung core. For minimal partner interference a zip and link bed zipped together is pretty amazing. The centre line is...err...less comfortable for 'interactions' however. We've got that in another bedroom.

Interesting, you may have nailed it there. We did have quite a firm mattress (mine before we moved in together) and have moved softer. We may have to try some of these brands with trial periods otherwise it starts to become a very expensive endeavour.
Vispring here from a local supplier after lying on it for some time. Cost a bike. Used a lot more than a bike. Also have a latex Tempur in another room, but Mrs TiRed can’t stand that! Don’t skimp, you’re lying on it for a loooong time. Which makes the real cost per night a bit more palatable.
JL currently have a 20% reduction on selected mattresses including the Waitrose Wool ones, Vispring and Hypnos.
Very tempted but cba'd driving any distance due to constant wet weather. Will chew the cud but not for long as offers end on the 4th.
