Just reading that over 1m people are coming off furlough at the end of the month. What industries still have people still on furlough? Everyone I talk to in all industry I come into contact with are flat out busy, no slack, not enough people and hard to recruit. I don’t want another blame brexit for everything thread. Im just interested to know what the 1m would be doing if they weren’t furloughed?

I have one employee on furlough. We’re not flat out busy at all, turnover is approx 20% of what it was pre-COVID.

My office is in Monument, London. The little Waitrose across the road was still shut last week, I reckon there’s 2/3 perm staff there still on furlough if they haven’t been made redundant.

Easy to replicate that through the rest of the city and country and come up with a million…

I would guess lots of restaurants / cafes in the City still have staff on furlough, footfall is stil less than it was pre-Covid and their customer base was office workers.

I suspect those that are not working flat out are in pocket industries who can't diversify easily or efficiently.

To be at only 20% suggests this for 136stu, which is a kick in the nuts when most around are the opposite.

Having said that, I wonder how many of those working flat out with more demand than capacity would have the same problem if they had the staff they did before Covid. There seems to be quite a lot of companies who have let people go during the time and not replaced, so they are all working above and beyond whilst the owners/shareholders bask in the profits due to decreased costs.

Met my mate for lunch on Thursday in Paternoster Square. Whilst my industry (engineering) is flat out I reckon 50% of the lunch places were still shut. There were loads of people around but it's still not up to pre-covid levels. People like me may be working full time but I'm only doing 1 day a week back in the office which means the pret below my office block is getting less custom.

I know of a few office manager / business reception folk still on furlough.
Large chunks of public sector in Scotland not back in the office and little sign that they will be soon.

Most of the pubs, restaurants cafes I’ve been to have been short staffed and are struggling to recruit. Not city centre though.

I imagine it will be a range of people from businesses that still haven't recovered, people employers don't want back and have found they can cope without and people who shouldn't be on furlough at all, long term sick types, I have one of those HR decided to furlough as it was the easy option. His job has now disappeared, combination of not having him in for 2 years and finding other ways to complete his tasks and a significant change that means much of what he did no longer needs doing. HR just need to decide whether it's redundancy or capability, in this case both legitimate mechanisms.

Me. We're in automotive parts manufacture/supply for some big OEM's, they aren't back up to full volume (covid/chip shortage/lack of sales, delete as appropriate) so neither are we.

Next month has got a lot of us worried, will we suddenly be busy again? It's that or the big R.

A mates son is a fairly newly qualified airline pilot. He starts back with Tui May 2022.

Yes, it's his second job and he's had simulator time all through the last 18 months. Along with delivering groceries for Morrisons and now working in a factory. He's a good lad, I'd feel in safe hands if he was flying a plane I was on.

In and around my office alone the below are all on or on flexible:

Facilities
Reception
Post Room
Cleaners
Events
Cafe staff

Around:

Most restaurants and bars only running Thurs to Sun if at all. End of scheme will likely be the end for many between now and Xmas.

I also see quite a lot of warehouse / distro and engineering in tech still on due to lack of parts. Even though there is demand they don’t have stock, raw materials or logistic capability. It’s very hard to rebuild / compromise production around what could be short term issues, only for them to be solved by the time you make the investment. E.g DAC, op amps and other sound chips out due to fire at factory etc.

Looks like life is about to get even harder for pubs without the ability to serve beer on tap.

Got the transpenine train to Manchester airport last week from Edinburgh. Arrived at 8pm and was one of 5 people on the train. Crazy - pre covid that would be a busy service. Also there're are fewer trains.

Easy to see how folk in transport, travel and all the support workers could still be away from work.

Events industry is one I think is still badly impacted. I think a lot of conferences were cancelled for 2021 with no firm plans for 2022. Also debatable if that market will recover fully.
