FIRST UP: this is not me complaining about xmas starting too early. If you want to come on and have a moan about other people's decorations or mince pies in the supermarkets then please go and start your own thread.

Anyway, I think I've noticed more decorations up than in previous years in my village. It feels more 'first weekend of December' than '2nd last weekend of November'. I'm just wondering if I'm imagining it or if people really are putting them up a bit sooner this year.

FWIW, our tradition is to put them up on my mum's birthday in mid December. This is the first year our son is really aware of the xmas stuff so we're starting a bit earlier because we're really crap at decorating and want a bit more time to put the effort in.

So, no judgement, no moaning - have you started your decorations early this year, and if so, why?

Yep - wife has been a bit down with constant lockdown (Manchester based, so we never really got out of it over the summer) and we felt it would lift our mood to put them up. We're normally pretty last minute and minimalistic about it, but it's actually been really nice to get some more bits and bobs to make the place more cheerful!

Our tree went up on Saturday. Never usually this early but me and the mrs are really struggling now with the lockdowns etc and needed some cheering up. Fairlights galore around the living room has certainly brightened up the evenings.

I might permit the decorating once December has started.

Yeah, I'm normally organising xmas parties and get togethers with old colleagues this time of year. Feels a bit flat.

On the plus side, I might not put on 5 kilos this December 🙂

Lots of it round here. I'm sure it's lockdown related. We normally do first weekend in December, but we won't last that long this year. In fact, we'd have happily done it already had we been stuck for family activities the last couple of weekends I think.

Yep, the wife is putting lights up the stairs banisters as we speak!!

Artificial tree went up in the lounge/WFH office (Im looking at it now) middle of last week... Buble Xmas special on spotify, mince pies, sherry and a happy wife.

Outside lights went up at the weekend as did the bow and xmas wreath on the front door but we'll wait a couple of weeks for a proper tree, that'll go up in the kitchen/diner/family room. Buble will get thrown on again and more mince pies will be eaten ... we got through about 4 packets so far.

Merry christmas ya filthy animals

Have fun

Ours went up on Sunday - MrsV cited lockdown-beating jollity as the reason although she's prob only a week earlier than usual. Left to my own devices I'd not do it before Dec, but it makes MrsV and MiniV happy and has little-to-no impact on me so I've stopped grumbling about it.

Ours will go up at the weekend. The wife loves Christmas so usually go up on the 1st December but will give everyone something to do this weekend! 6 year old has been asking for the last week. We did his Santa letter early this year as we wanted to get thing organised now knowing what was going on etc so it is our own fault really! Will be nice to get the house a bit more bright and cheery anyway.

Twelve days before, twelve days after. Set. In. Stone.

My cousin put hers up two weeks ago, seems madness to me - her kids'll be bored stupid by Christmas day. One has her birthday on Christmas Eve - last year, she was bored of opening presents by the afternoon of the 25th. Imagine that - a 7 year old bored of opening presents. Where's the magic gone? 🙁

We're putting lights up this weekend on the house and tree outside for the 1st of December. There's a bit of a neighbourhood drive to light up the neighbourhood, as 'light at the end of 2020'. TBH everyone's housebound at this time of year and it'll hopefully cheer people up.

No, just because there’s a pandemic on is a crap excuse.

Our local christmas tree seller is busy reminding people that if they buy a christmas tree now it will probably be dead by the time its actually Christmas.

I'm guessing we'll be starting in a couple of weeks; I don't get people complaining about others having theirs up early, its nice to have a bit of festivity after this year.

Up on the 18th of Dec for 10 days, same as usual.
But there's only my youngest lad (19) and myself that live here and neither of us are Christians. Saying that, we do partake in that weird tradition of having your tea at lunch time and drinking slightly more than usual. I don't really care what other people do...

Our decorations went up last weekend. I mentioned it during our Saturday Zwift group ride and sure enough when I got back in the house, most of it had already been done.

I've got some lights to run round the roofline, but will try to get out of it this year. I am not that confident up ladders, so this gives me the right heebie jeebies....will probably end up doing it this weekend though!

To be honest, the decorations are such a faff it actually makes more sense to do them early as it makes the faff a bit more worth it...

We always have a “not until December” rule. The argument being its not special if there too soon, and you’d get bored of it. But the wife has been sneaking bits up here and there “oh I need you to help me hang this garland up as it’s too high for me” etc (I swear we never used to have a garland!).

Anyway, I was standing my ground over it, but then realised I was being a grumpy bore! And if it makes wife and kids happy….then let it be.

I said a couple of months ago that I fancied doing them early this year and I have spoken to a few people since and they all seem to be of the same mind. But they aren't going up until the first weekend of December still (rather than the traditional 12 nights before that we usually follow).

Our street is also doing a window advent calendar (ie, each house decorates a window with the countdown number in some creative fashion so all the local kids can walk around and see them).

Ours went up last weekend, might as well try and get some festive cheer going!

Our 4 year old daughter loved help putting it up and when my 16 month old boy woke up from his nap and came in the room we got a big "Wow" from him 👍😊

It'll be back in the loft by New Year's.

We're normally the first weekend in December and it's usually a battle to hold her off doing it until then.
If we had a house then no doubt the Mrs would have started sneaking some up. However, this year we are moving house hopefully within the next couple of weeks. We put the decorations right at the back of the storage unit back in June thinking we'd be well moved in by the time we need them. Things have been delayed quite a bit and now I have the joy to look forward to of trying to manoeuver around the contents of an entire house in a shipping container to get to them!

I found out this weekend that we were joining the club of the unfeasibly early. Her excuse is that being isolated and healthy due to my positive test from work, she had nothing better to do.

At least I can leave the house now to get away from them where as, she can't yet.

Can anyone recommend decent outdoor lights. A string of bulb type lights for draping and something to wind round the tree?

We’re doing our tree early because it makes the house smell nice and I’ll take whatever little wins I can right now. Might just leave it up all winter to be honest. Also the holly tree in our garden has gone mental this year so I’m having a full harvest at the weekend. Holly literally everywhere. Happy days.

No.

Mine won't go up until a week before Santa comes... maybe even later than that. I don't have my daughter living or staying with me so no need. I'm probably scarred by Christmas starting early having worked over 20 Christmases in retail so home feels like an escape from it all to me

Like Pondo, 12 days before, 12 days after. But I detest Christmas and wouldn't have any up at all if I could get away with it!
I kinda envy folk who can enjoy the whole thing. I just can't.

We have one Christmas tree up already - went up on Sunday I think. Another one will probably go up this weekend. As will the outdoor lights - once I've untangled the buggers.

To be honest, the decorations are such a faff it actually makes more sense to do them early as it makes the faff a bit more worth it…

String of fairly lights on the stairs and one in the living room ... both still up from last year.
They probably just need new batteries and the one in the living room got appropriated in August and Jnr's Birthday cards hung on it which are still there so need taking down.

Shouldn't take more than 5 mins if someone want to do it... I can't be arsed though.

Yes. I'm normally hard line grumpy old man about this. Well into December usually. Not this year, my wife has been shielding, we've not seen our parents or kids all year and it's basically been a bit shit. We haven't got a tree yet, but all the other decs went up last weekend A bit of early Christmas bling has cheered us both up. It's not a normal year, I think "the rules" can we well and truly relaxed if it brings a smidge of cheer into the otherwise unrelenting bleakness.
