It was been mentioned on the Orange thread about UK customers (not) buying new bikes and I am curious. Who plans to buy a MTB in 2024 and will it be an ebike or normal?

I wont be buying a bike this year, I've decided to use the cash I would have spent on some trips away to ride the bike I already have.

Nope, but I did buy all the parts for my first new bike build in a long time, in the sales at the end of 2023. I'll be putting it together in 2024.

I think I probably will, maybe even two.

Either a Stooge (I don't need one, I already have an objectively better HT, but that's not the point I want a Stooge)

And / Or a new road bike that's more suited to year round use than my 20yr old racing bike.

And / Or a new commuter. The OFO is looking and feeling knackered. But I don't really want to spend £££ on a better replacement.

Gravel bike is perennially due an upgrade as it's reached the point where there are probably more suitable bikes for where/what I ride (including just getting an XC wheelset for a different bike)

Winter hack fixie, might be redundant with a new road bike. But equally would like to get something similar but with disks.

Bought a new-to-me FS this year so won't be replacing that for a while.

So somewhere between 0 and 6!

I'm playing with the idea of an Orbea Rise or similar lighter-style e-bike. Last new bike was an Occam in 2015 and it has served me well but a bit of e-power would let me link all the local bits of riding near me with less misery on the tarmac bits.

Ideally it'll be a reduced one that I can still get 0% finance though...which makes things trickier.

I bought a new bike in '22 and a frame that I built up in '23 and haven't got a need for another bike at the moment.

One of the things I like about bikes is when I'm riding round on one and thinking that it doesn't owe me anything. Especially when it's been serviced/refreshed and is riding really nicely.

I suspect I'll get an ebike at some point, but at the moment I think they're still in the prototype stage, and will be for a few more years yet.

I keep looking at an ebike - in particular Orbea Rise but keep seeing more and more awful reviews

More thinking now a Levo SL Gen 2 or Trek Fuel EXe - but will only buy with at least 20% off as prices are just nuts

Plus last year along with buying a bike, I bought all the bits I needed to keep the drivetrain going on my other bike, plus I got the suspension serviced, and replaced all the bushings, so y'know, more or less kept the bike industry going...😂

I’m mulling between a beautiful, artisan made, mega DH bike.

Or giving up and getting a Kenevo (possibly SL)

If all my disposable income isn’t sucked up by remortgaging in July.

This year is probably the ebike year, more so as in the last three months all of my riding buddies have bought an Orbea Rise. Went out with them on my “bike” and it was a struggle.

Tempted by the Fuel EXe 8, the alloy version GX AXS T Type in Matte Keswick.

The new E-Lyte models from Whyte look like they are going to be good too.

They are just so expensive mind.

Not purchasing any new bikes - just riding the ones Ive got in some nice locations and servicing/replacing worn out parts as required.

Any suggestions of alternatives?

If I can finally convince work to set up a C2W scheme, then I'll buy a fancy roadbike, Aeroad or supersix evo are the frontrunners.

I'd absolutely love one but no, saving for a new house over the next 2 years and packing away as much spare cash as possible to give us more leverage when the right house comes up for sale.

Depending how things go will either get a frame to swap bits over and build on, or buy used, if I find myself unable to wait. When we've got the new digs the plan is to treat myself to a nice well specced e-bike and build a short travel trail bike up from scratch.
I also cant justify getting a new fancy bike whilst my only bike storage is a cramped shed, hate pulling the bike out and seeing rust on my bolts, would really really bother me on a new bike, on my current bike it annoys me slightly but I just lube the chain and go ride it.

No plans to yet but then it is only the 12th of Jan and I have never kept the same bike for more than a year so chances are I will be changing the bike at some point.

I've already got one too many and I definitely don't need a new one but I can't rule out a frame swap at some point.

Probably a cheap (as possible) e hard tail, on C2W but that’ll be primarily for the missus, er I mean commuting

also a down country x gnar pootleschralp fs for me if plans come together

Hadn't fully planned it this year but the less than 1/2 price on Vitus eBike had me pull the trigger and order one. Arrives next week. Can just about justify it as eldest is now on my old 26er hardtail and is coveting my full sus.

Wouldn't mind a lighter ebike with the Fauza motor, if I could get one with a bit of a discount, like the Santa Cruz Heckler SL or a Pivot Shuttle SL, but maybe later in the year when the issues have been sorted.

I "need" to replace my XC-ish bike. So some sort of downcountry, short travel trail bike. C2W is in place, but that means committing to working for them for the whole of the year, so maybe a discounted model is a better compromise. That means no latest models and I'm a sucker for buying the latest to not get "left behind".

I’ll be buying 2.

First bike for my son cos his sisters bike is too big.

Second bike for my daughter cos hers is too small. (When will they discount the vitus 20+ dammit)

Would love to buy a new long-travel trail bike (something 150mm or 160mm front and back) as I am now living somewhere near to trails that would justify one.

Am also gravel-curious as I owned a Specialized Tricross from 2012-2015 and it was a really fun bike for bashing out miles.

Sadly, due to the cost of living crisis, I don't have enough money for either. Will have to wait until 2025.

As per nick - I bought one last year so nothing likely to change this year. I think I have all my current requirements covered with the selection in my garage.

Might upgrade the trainer though...

i was planning on getting a Raaw frame, but once you factor in the import duties, it takes it past what i am willing to spend (thanks a bunch brexit).

Plus it made me realise i actually still really like my Dia-Vitus, so have treated that to some GX transmission.

Plus a new frame wont make me ride any faster/further/better, so its just for pure consumerism needs.

Plenty of deals about atm so considering swapping my Cube for a Specialized Epic or Orange Stage 5 for another Orange. Tempted to swap my Pace frame for a longer travel full suss though……

Either way it will need to be mainly financed by sales so really depends what I can raise if I can be bothered.

Bought one in 2022, and 2023, I think 2024 won't have a new bike in it - unless it's a sub £200 single speed commuter thingie, but even that's hard to justify...

I've just bought a Cube stereo hybrid 160 hpc slx 750 2023 (bit of a mouthful). After quite a bit of prevarication I decided that I've reached the age where it makes sense - whilst I'm still active enough to enjoy it. A few ventures out so far .... Porridgepot, Tunnel Hill, Bagshot testing area D1.... getting used to the feel and extra weight.... but loving it so far.

Possibly. The two companies I'm considering are pretty small are there aren't any offers or deals to be had. They both tend to sell all they can make.

The bigger worry is whether they will weather the storm in case I ever need a warranty claim or similar.

Only thing i might try and go for is some better wheels for the Basso.

Yup. Bought a new Road Bike in the sales, arrives on Monday. Given the larger shops not buying as much stock in 2024, I don't think I'll see the same sort of discounts next year.

In the very early stages of designing / making a new one ready for next autumn and winter. Current local riding is permaswamp so it will have some very special features to make it durable and minimal maintenance. In terms of content from UK and elsewhere:

Hope hubs, brakes, seat collar and headset because they are just down the road and do a huge amount to support local riders, racing and employees. And the stuff generally lasts.

Middleburn cranks (BETD in Midlands).

Probably Columbus tubing but I suppose it could stick with the UK theme and go Reynolds if I get beyond their minimum order value.

SIF brazing rods so think they are UK.

Some aluminium extrusion which might well be UK made.

Maybe a £500 chunk of drivetrain that has to come from Germany (tbc).

SQ lab bars because there are none made in the UK with a decent angle of sweep.

Fork undecided.

Painted locally (maybe Cerakote) 4 miles away from where I am sat now. Anodising goodness knows where.

And various other bits and bobs.

So definitely not a budget build, but don't think I'll make anyone rich.....

Nope - got 5 bikes, 2 MTB, 2 road and a CX. The CX was a used purchase last year and I already had spare wheels, so that's the winter bike/muck about bike. The road bikes (vintage) come out in nice weather. The FS is for proper off road, and the old Rigid MTB is the commuter. Both MTB's and the CX have spare wheelsets ready to swap out depending on weather, so nope, way too much kit.

Just acquired another pair of MW7 winter boots, seeing though I've lived in my other pair the last six months.

Nope.

Was supposed to be going on a fancy foreign holiday but between unexpectedly having to buy a new car, my current twingy back and related sciatica, and just basically not loving the idea of foreign travel much right now, I'm thinking I might abandon and tart up the existing bikes a wee bit and do some more big days in Scotland.

Gravel bike - I want to tinker with wider tyres but it requires a new set of forks, which Ritchey apparently do (rim brakes, so choice is very limited). A bit of scunner given that I got the existing forks custom painted and wouldn't want to pay to paint ANOTHER set of of forks 🙄. So maybe new forks + tyres.

MTB - I want to keep tinkering with the bars to make it better suited to longer distance stuff (I still get pins and needles in my hands and generally can never settle in one hand position on the flat bars). Maybe new bars and possibly saddle (and possibly dropper now I think about it).

Road - Saddles! I've almost entirely moved over to Fizik Antares on 2 x gravel and 2 x road bikes. They're definitely comfortable over the course of some fairly long rides, but I still can't help but wonder if something that's a bit less comfortable to sit on but more supportive (e.g. something curved) might help low back and hips. I have a Selle SMP on long term loan from somebody on here so will stick that on commuter first to try. Maybe some new shoes as well, I keep wondering what saving 500g+ on a set of shoes would feel like, would you notice that sort of weight saving?

Probably not. Might have got a new gravel bike on the C2W scheme, but a discounted Specialised Diverge was too tempting to pass up so did it last year.
Never say never thought, but it'll probably be something like a cargo bike or Minivelo if I do.

Started off 2023 with no plan to buy any more unless a 2nd hand Stumpy Evo carbon frame came up for the right money

Managed to get to July before an impulse purchase of one of the 50 % off Enduro Experts from Evans

Bought daughter a DJ bike whilst she is out in NZ as she left hers at home and didn't fancy the hassle of shipping it out

Got to the end of November and was offered a slightly used 2023 Turbo Levo Pro at a too good to miss price so bought it as we already had enquiries if we had an older one to sell from another rider

2024 no more purchases unless needed.

Never did find a Stumpy Evo frame

Yep, got some more custom titanium rigid singlespeeds arriving for me, plus some titanium bits i've been designing myself component wise so, yes I shall be helping keeping the niche beardy shed dudes in business.

I may also get one of the stooge dirt tracker frames in before they all sell out as well, even that sits in the workshop for a bit before a build later in the year

Unless something catastrophic happens, I don't intend to buy a new bike until 2028. And even then it'll be second hand carbon. Bikes have reached a bit of a plateau, I like my current bikes very much and the standards are all current. And the world doesn't need more new stuff. I have told myself I won't ride a new bike in the meantime to avoid the risk of being won over by something massively better, though.

Yes / No / Maybe

If I can convince work to move away from their Evans C2W scheme, then yes to a new Cotic Escapade for actual commuting duties otherwise I'll stick with my second hand Arkose X that's perfectly fine but doesn't light up my heart.

As for an MTB, I'll wait until I can get a new hip as I'm constrained to gentler pootling at the mo

Yes possibly, considering changing my road bike up to something a bit more all weather and more comfortable on poorer surfaces. Finances and space will dictate whether this is N+1 or whether I'll try and take the wheels/drivetrain and other bits and pieces from my current road bike.

Would be looking purchasing from a smaller UK brand such as Mason or Fairlight I imagine.

Only the vitus sentier because I couldn't not at that price. Was cheaper than a new groupset for my hardtail. Still won't believe it until it arrives mind. Apparently will be Feb by the time they've got through the clearance orders from last week

Nothing wrong with either of my main bikes and looking to move the hardtail on as I never use it so very doubtful anything new will appear this year. Any big spending will go on trips and maybe a skills day or two, much bigger bang fro buck than a new bike.

Probably not. I bought myself a 22" BMX for Xmas though.

If I can sell my Norco Sight in bits for a reasonable sum of money I might, possibly consider building an Airdrop Edit MX.

Hopefully they're all sold out before I get the chance to spend the money.

Bought a Aeris9 in 2022 and due to recently separating and all that entails I very much doubt it.

If I did it'd likely be a gravel bike of some sort or other which would mean I had a hard tail full Sus and a drop bar. But next year maybe ...

I'm keen on an XC bike this year. Haven't owned a mountain bike in ten years but feel an urge after enjoying being off road on the gravel bike. Not really sure what I'm looking for. Probably a short travel FS. Any reason why this wouldn't fit the bill?

No.
Mrs_oab has shiny new eHybrid thing. She doesn't use MTB enough to have need of replacing her secondhand MTB.
I've got new to me gravel/do it all and a 6-7 year old hard tail that still works.

I might actually get around to the trade I have been wanting to make for a while. My HT (Kinesis Virsa) is looking very end of life and I want to treat myself to either a Ti HT (Turner?) because I want to redo the SDW and I think it is the best ride for that, or a racier carbon HT - which won't be comfy for the SDW but might be a bit more fun in short bursts. Decisions, decisions....Then again, this time next year I might still be deliberating.

Following some email chats with Marino this week, will be filling in an order form this weekend.

Got the feeling this might well be the last non e-bike I buy, so time I got something slightly esoteric built before I finally go motor-assisted.

Steel. Mullet (plus). Mismatched travel. Not totally slack but quite long and low. Basically a tweaked poundshop Chromag Darco.

Lucky enough in the current climate to still be able to afford it, so why not?

Got whistler booked. I've snapped 2 bikes there in previous years and my current dh bike is old, so if it goes there near the start of the trip I'll just buy whatever I can from whoever is around. If not, no purchases this year

I fancy a Patriot to replace my phase 29 but will see how things are later in the summer with orange. C2W ends in May so hoping to get a nice gravel frame to replace my current rx9 frame.

Eldest will need a new man this year but it’ll be 2nd hand.
