I understand that what is posted is then in the public domain, does that mean anyone is allowed to copy what is written and share it elsewhere (without saying where it came from)?
Just wondering as I’ve seen a company on FB using things people have said about their products in discussions on here as “reviews”, but without without saying where they’ve come from and obviously lifted out of context somewhat
Completely understand why they would do this, just wondered that’s all

This content harvesting from social media seems to be a bit of a new Internet "business model".

If I said "My Hope BB has great bearings and looks fab in black." I would possibly mind more if a third party attributed that to an identifiable me without explicit consent.

However I would hope that in a commercial context the content in my own posts belongs to me and STW has the right to reproduce.

Let’s be honest, it’s more likely to be reviews of coffee machines, German cars, log-burners and pizza ovens than bikes, isn’t it?

I noticed the said content on FB earlier and was able it to post.

It's not like they've editted it either - still has some of the negative comments!!

Well yes it is PX/OO and their tyre inserts, glad I’m not the only one who’d seen it (all comments were from a psa I started)
I also thought it was weird they hadn’t edited out the bad, but then think it relates to the comment below that about doing a 180 on initial thoughts

Do you have a Link?

They seem to have a new approach to advertising. They link to more expensive versions of their products from the competition. Kind of like lidl or is it aldi?

I've found it pretty amusing.

I remember seeing a post for how good value their jobsworth wall hangers were, nearly posted links to eBay ones but couldn’t be arsed
Also to be clear I don’t like or follow them on FB, but they do pop up as sponsored adverts
It’s purely because I started the thread that these “reviews” have been lifted from I started this thread, I was tempted to post the negative reviews from the same thread as comments
Not sure if this link will work

At least you know the review is genuine , as opposed to some made up bull
So , in the format of harvesting from the 'net , I don't really have a problem with it.
Its way better than a journo reveiwing a £170 jacket that they didn;t pay 1p for and raving about how great it is , when they havent tried the 1p jackets that are also available

All of you accept a shared right to your posts when you sign up. This is known as a universal none exclusive right. That just means that you are giving us (Singletrack) the right to reproduce your content. So, this means we share the rights. A third party can only reproduce your posts with permission from either one of us. That’s certainly the case for commercial use. There are fair use rights for journalism of course where there’s a genuine public interest.

Our policy on this is that it’s fine for companies to link to and quote selectively from small parts of our content but it’s not ok to lift it verbatim and publish without reference to the source. Which is pretty standard practice.

I’ve posted on the PX Facebook page something to that effect.

Similarly, thanks for the article about the new on-one bikes but would have been good to have "reached out" to us for some more info before posting, but happy that Andy is up for having beer with me in town to go through things.

That was literally lifted off the site with zero clarification from anyone on our side. It's not exactly hard to get hold of me.

To be fair and honest, we aren’t obliged to reach out, though it’s good to follow up as journalists. However you are obliged to contact us before using ours or our users content. There’s no equivalence here and your argument does sound a bit ‘whataboutery’.

You’ve credited everything appropriately now on your page. I’m happy to call this one resolved. I’m sure you won’t make this mistake again.

When this thread is dramatised for the inevitable blockbuster movie, is it Brant or Mark that will be played by Julian Assange?

The extracts used on that FB link are a classic example of Fair Dealing/Use, and perfectly fine with or without prior permission. If you lift the entire thread and quote it verbatim, then that's no longer fair dealing.

The etiquette of 'reaching out', attribution and crediting I'll leave up to the mega-hitters.

PX marketing emails frequently feature images that appear to have been lifted from the web, eg. retro celebs for "comedic" effect.

So I'd guess they either don't understand copyright law or don't care.

Careful, if you say that name three times you'll summon the ghost of JHJ.

Julian Assange and Jimmy Saville in the same thread - you may have a point.

That On-One Big Dog looks remarkably like the prototype hooligan Inbred 567 I bought off Brant years ago, except for the conventional A-type seatstays instead of the wishbone type on mine.
Which is still out in the shed, still with it’s 6” Nixons.
Nice looking bike, btw. 😬

My hooligan 567...

It’s not exactly hard to get hold of me.

Brant, they may have sent you a pm through the stw site but it didn't work. It's been a bit hit and miss lately 🤔

A bit wierd they didn't ask for your input, especially as you only need to say your name 3 times and you reply straight away.

As above, I like real world reviews rather than someone who was flown somewhere nice, all expenses paid and given a bike and told "same again next year?" wink wink.
